New Aire is the coach that we are upgrading to. We had downsized from a 30' Class A to a 27' Class B, we now wished that we stayed with a Class A and wish Newmar had the New Aire out because after all I have read and videos watched, the New Aire is the one we are seeking!

We purchased our first RV last year, a 3 year old 28FT Thor Chateau. We went with something a little smaller because my wife was uncertain if she would like it, and we got an amazing deal as well. After a year of RVing she wants to upgrade to an A class and after watching your video she's got her heart set one the New Aire. I guess we'll be saving for a while!!!

I have a 2005 Newmar and love looking at new coaches as well. If nothing else, it helps provide ideas on possible updates we can make to our coach. We noticed the overhead cabinets in the slides didn't have as much internal height. The sales rep explained they added insulation to the roof area so when the slide is out there isn't as much heat exchange (on or out). We do find our slides are a bit colder when we have the heat on. The one thing that Newmar has been adding to the new coaches is the emergency escape door in the rear bath/bed area. We have the small window and a door is a much safer and easier method for escaping should the need arise. We looked at a Ventana at a show this past winter that had the door right in the bedroom and if you opened it there was a drop down ladder. I think this is an excellent feature and am glad to see them thinking this way in their designs. It greatly exceeds the mandated requirements. Newmar also has a video on their web site that explains the new chassis design that provides the increased height you mention in the video.

So wanted a Newmar for our full-time life in an RV. Price though, drove us older. But, I love the look of the New Aire. My wife would LOVE to have a shorter rig (our Safari is 40'). So, if you downsize to a New Aire, I'd love to see how you incorporate your workspaces. Our RV had a whole slide that, once we removed the dining table and the Euro-recliner, we could put to desks in AND our cat box enclosure. You are my go to tech site for how-tos, thanks for providing such great info that helped us into the full-time life!

Hi Brian, and thanks so much for the nice comments! Unfortunately, a New Aire is not in our immediate future. As far as workspace, we seem to have one advantage over many of our other working-age RVing friends.... we're very comfortable using the dining room table as a workspace, and have no dedicated office space, other than a buffet with room underneath for the printer, a (seldom used) slide-out keyboard tray, etc. We know that's not ideal for most people, but we don't seem to mind working together on the table... when we're not eating on it! 😊
@TravelswithYoly

We've successfully downsized a couple times for two different reasons. The first time was to go back to basics and simplicity to avoid the plethora of quality issues we had experienced in our first 3 rigs. Then recently, after traveling 10,000 miles a year for the last 8 years, we've depleted our bucket list and drained the retirement travel budget. As we are traveling shorter distances and less frequently we didn't want the large payment on the $25K truck camper since it was sitting idle more often. So we sold it and just last week purchased the least expensive (and lightest) truck camper on the planet. We got to influence the base model floor plan and much of the interior is left up to us as to how extensively it's outfitted. We're building the interior now and have really created a functional and comfortable space that although small, still affords us a better experience than the much more expensive and complex (unreliable) alternatives. Sometimes "less is more" :-) (see our latest video for the delivery experience of the new TC).

Thanks for the quickie tour. Good to know that they are keeping their quality up. I just bought another Newmar coach. a 17 year old Dutch Star pusher 3859. My last coach was a 1997 DS 37 DP. We full timed for 4 yrs. Drove it nearly 30,000mi, Did almost all my own maintenance and had just about no problems. We did a lot of research before buying that first coach. It was then just 3 yrs old so further up on the depreciation curve than the one we just bought. But I must say that they really do hold up well. I went to Elkhart and Newmar does a great job. Would have loved to get a coach like this 33 but!! 3-4 hundred thousand is not in my budget. But if you have the money, go for it! I got this 38 because I trusted it as a well known product with the Spartan/Cummins combo. Raised rail through storage etc. In buying it I knew it would be some what limiting size wise but an except able trade off to know that you have a proven quality product (especially when buying this old. Your Videos are excellent! I have really enjoyed and benefited from them. When I was fulltiming before I didn’t have the advantage of all this information that we have now. Keep it up and maybe get a new 33 some day!!

My wife and I have a Newmar New Aire 3343 at the top of our list right now. Thanks for the comments on quality and storage. If I understand you correctly, the storage compartments on the New Aire are taller than the compartments on your 2005 Mountain Aire, or at least the access area when the doors are open is taller so you can put taller items on the pull out trays. My wife really liked the compartments under the two steps at the entry. She is making a list of items she wants to store there. I too hope that the New Aire survives the test of time and is available when we are ready to purchase ours. Regrettably our financial situation forces us to wait about 2.8 years until we can buy ours. OH and currently we go camping a few times a year in a 17 year old Coleman pop up camper..... so this will be QUITE a jump up. From a pop up to what I like to think of as a luxury apartment on a truck chassis! We too like the length as we think we can get into more places with a 34' rig vice what we were told is the current most popular length of a Class A at 42'. Keep the GREAT videos coming!!!!!!
@RVgeeks
6 жыл бұрын
You've got your eyes on one heck of a coach! It sure will be quite a step up from a pop-up camper! LOL! And you are correct... the biggest contributor to the additional, usable storage space in the New Aire basement is the height of the door openings... effectively, they are as tall as the basement is, allowing more items to be stacked on the slide tray. Our '05 has narrower door openings, which limits what we can put on our trays. But another factor was that the chassis rails were noticeably less intrusive than the ones on our Mountain Aire... which helps with the height of items that need to fit under them on the tray.

We strongly considered the New Aire but went with a Dutch Star 4018 instead. The king bed and a little more room were the biggest factors. Another concern in the New Aire was the lower ground clearance. They never advertise what the ground clearance is but it is a couple of inches lower than our Dutch Star. We do a lot of boondocking on some rougher roads so we opted for a little more height. I just became a subscriber and really like your information.

One thing we were surprised about with the newer RV's out there is how flimsy the cabinet doors are becoming, some of them sounded like guitar strings when we opened them lol. Hope they give you the keys to one so we can hear what you think of the ride and handling. Take care guys and safe travels!!

It is on my shortlist for my part-time retirement home. While you have mentioned not wanting to do traditional RV reviews in addition to your current content, this video proves there could be incredible value in doing 'mini-dives' into aspects of RVs that may be of interest to both of you (Chassis Design Improvements, Move to All Glass Dashboards, Avoidance Collision technologies, etc.). Best Feature of the chassis has got to be, the side radiator! I looked at these units and found them to be of high quality. I don’t agree with the companies standpoint about alternative lifestyles. This fact alone, keeps me from owning any newmar product. Thanks Gordon! We agree that side radiators rule! As far as the company stance you mentioned, we know about a bit of talk that came up several years ago when Newmar didn't reply to a questionnaire they were sent by a large camping group (which we belonged to at the time). Everything we've ever seen is that take no stance whatsoever. We have had many dealings directly with the company, and have never been treated with anything other than the utmost respect. Newmar had no problem featuring us on their blog (they actually reached on to us): www.newmarcorp.com/blog/guest-blog-meet-the-rvgeeks/ In our experience, the rap they've gotten is not deserved.

Don't know if thing have changed, but back when we bought our, 13 years ago, we were able to get a 30-year fixed-rate mortgage, just like we did on our regular home. Maybe technically called "financing" but the same basic thing.

It's the same. We bought our Winnebago in 2016 and did a 30-year fixed. It made sense at the time because under the old tax code, you could deduct the interest on the RV as a "second home"...like vacation home. I believe we lost that deduction under the new tax code congress approved last year.

Great review! I'm looking for a smaller rv. I love the 2 floorplans. More floorplans wouldn't hurt. But NO to longer lengths. Newaire are for people that want shorter so you'll be allowed into National Parks and easier parking. There are a ton of larger rv already. If anything I'd like to see a sub 30 foot.
@RVgeeks

Hi Manuel! Newmar just announced a third floorplan for '19. As far as lengths, we like the idea of at least some choices ranging up to about 35-36' max. A 35-footer will fit into most National parks, and still have room for a king bed. Of course those who want the shortest would be well-served by lengths as low as 30', er even less. More choices = better in our book.

I first discovered you guys sailing w/ the Wynns & have enjoyed your DIY vids, keep up the good work.I love the short coach, especially the split bath model ,but Newmar allows basically ZERO mods to furnishings. When you have a coach approaching 400k you should be able to customize some furniture to your liking. When I buy I will be forced into a Ventana to get recliners & a free standing dinette. I will however lose the split bath my wife likes so much , but guess I should be happy about that considering the Ventana is about 50k cheaper.
@RVgeeks
6 жыл бұрын
Hi Scott! Have you actually asked a reputable Newmar dealer, or Newmar's sales department, about this, or are you basing this on the options list in the brochure? When we ordered our RV in 2005 (which we had custom-built to order), we took advantage of Newmar's reputation for being VERY open to customizations, and they included a few very specific and unusual custom requests for us. We've never heard that they've changed that policy, so before you compromise on the model you order, you might want to confirm that they won't do it. Also, there are tons of custom shops in both Indiana and Oregon (and probably other places, too) that will remove a sofa, a dinette, a desk, and other built-ins or furnishings, and replace them with whatever you want. That includes custom-built furniture or cabinetry. And the prices we've seen quoted aren't too bad. Even if Newmar won't install what you're looking for, you can almost certainly request that they omit items. All that said, we're pretty sure that a Ventana is a LOT less than $50k cheaper than a New Aire. 😉
@scottn2526
6 жыл бұрын
RVgeeks yes I actually spoke with a dealer and was told that part of the components for the slide were embedded underneath the booth Dinette and that the booth dinette was the only option. I even told them that I would accept a free-standing dinette on a raised platform like you see in certain models where the floor is raised underneath the table and they said no.
@RVgeeks
6 жыл бұрын
Ah... so this sounds like it's not a problem with Newmar being unwilling to do custom furniture, but rather the issue of this specific floorplan having hidden structural elements that have to be housed under the dinette. If you really want the New Aire, and are only avoiding it because of this issue, we'd confirm the situation right from the horse's mouth by calling Newmar directly. Not that we don't think it's true, but we wouldn't take a dealer's word for it, since they so often are misinformed about this type of thing, or may even have some hidden motivation for telling you that.

We have a friend with a full wall slide and he said hw's never had the slightest problem with it. We know they've been out for long enough that if they were inherently inferior, we'd have heard more about it.... but we really haven't. Maybe the first couple of years might have been problematic, but if so it seems they've gotten it worked out.

I am one to always prefer purchasing American made products when given the choice. The Newmar line is impressive but its indoors decor and design feels very tired and outdated. I’d expect American made RV manufacturers (specially class A ones) to offer a choice of more contemporary/modern interior design to better serve all the market’s segments. Winnebago’s new Horizon RV is a good example of my point, kudos to them for that initiative. Hopefully many other manufacturers will follow suit. Thanks for posting.

Geez, John and Peter, you SHOULD be paid by Newmar. You pretty much sold me on a New Aire for our next coach. We, too, are in a 43' DP, and my wife has been dismayed by the number of places we CANNOT go because of our size. Thank you for the video, for sharing your thoughts. If you come East, keep in mind that we have plenty of room to entertain you for a few days. :-) Ps. How deep are the slides? Is there MUCH less room in travel mode than when parked, leveled, and slides fully extended? Presently our slides are so deep that our RV is hardly usable when in travel mode. Our next one needed slides that are less deep and the RV more usable when the slides are not extended. Thanks for any thoughts you have. :-)

Thanks so much for the nice comments, Neal! We think you should relate them to Newmar! 😉 As far room to function with the slides in (we know you're an experienced RVer when you bring up this very important topic), we're on the same page. Since we do our share of Wal-Mart lots, one of our primary requirements is that the rig be usable for us for an overnight stop with all slides in. Unfortunately, the two units the dealer had on the lot both had all slides out and power off, so we don't know the answer yet. We're hoping that since our MADP is so good in that area, the New Aire is the same. We're hoping to get back on board a fully-powered-up unit at some point to go over more details, and we'll be sure to remember to check it out with all slides retracted.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news guys, but a king bed won't be any longer than the queen, only wider. I'm 6'3" and we had to swap out our "camper queen" (60"x74") for a real queen (60"x80") in our RV to get the added 6" length.

That's why we need the extra width, Mike..... to sleep diagonally! 😂 We're 6'2" and 6'1" but need for space is a personal thing, and we need space! We can't get a longer mattress, because when the two bedroom slides come in, the current length already fills the entire available width of the RV.

@RVgeeks
6 жыл бұрын
Hey Alan! We know some people with gas motorhomes, even some fulltimers. Every one of them has either switched to diesel, or would if they could afford it. Personally, we would never want a gas rig, especially for full-timing. Just too many compromises.... one couple we know (fellow fulltimers) actually had to disconnect their car before driving up steep mountains, and drive up separately! They recently sold their gas rig and bought a diesel. As far as Tiffin goes, it used to be fairly high on our list, but too much anecdotal evidence of problems with them, and we removed them from consideration for ourselves. That’s just our personal take on them.

I liked the idea of this model very much, but as it's been pointed out to me during my RV search, that the bed and dinner table are on the wrong side. The drivers side is the closest you'll be to your neighbors in most parks. They may like staying up late and may be a bit noisy. In addition if your work from your RV and use the table for this having a bunch of noisy children outside your window may be a bit distracting. Don't understand why this isn't taken into consideration during the planning stages. Everything else looked fantastic but layout, I'm learning, is important.

Hi Jeffrey! Yes indeed... layout/floorplan is SO important! That's why we're eager for this to be a successful product for Newmar... so they make more choices available. Incidentally, our bed and dinner table have been on the driver's side for the past 13 years! LOL It's never been a problem for us, and some things are just what you're used to... or personal preference. There's always some compromise, and like my Mom says: "That's why they make vanilla & chocolate!"

Just wondering...do you consider a 36 foot rig pretty much a happy medium for both space and convenience in camps BLM usage? I know a one person rig can be almost anything but to be comfortable for even two requires much more room. I would appreciate you thoughts. Thank you for sharing this.
@RVgeeks

BLM is usually pretty easy (at least in the West). It's National Park and National Forest campgrounds that are most limiting. While we know people who full-time in 32'-33' motorhomes, we think that 35' is right around the sweet spot, for us at least. That would allow things we want for ourselves, such as king bed, separate washer & dryer, etc. It really is such a personal thing that we're only speaking for ourselves of course.

I'm interested to hear the Cargo Carrying Capacity in the New Air with a single rear axle vs. your Mtn Air. I know most DPs have plenty of excess cargo carrying ability compared to Gas coaches, but the numbers are always are to find from the mfg.
@RVgeeks
6 жыл бұрын
The New Aire has the advantage of a 24,000 lb rear axle, but it's the FRONT that most often goes overweight. Since it has the same 14,600 lb front axle our 9-ft-longer rig has, that should help a lot. The New Aire lists a net carrying capacity on their website of about 7,500 lbs, which is pretty good, especially since the front axle capacity is so high for a rig that size.

What are your thoughts or experience with a combination W/D compared to the individuals? I see them both ways depending on what was ordered with the rig. Not sure what the 40' one I'm considering has. Thanks
@RVgeeks
6 жыл бұрын
We've had both, and for US (as full-timers who also work on the road) we prefer the stacked, separate units. We had a combo W/D in our Bounder... and while it was better than nothing, it was more of a pain for us than anything. If you did a full washer load of clothes, it was too much for the drier. Everything would end up coming out a total, wrinkled. So you'd have to split a wash load and dry half, while the other half got hung up. And you couldn't do a second wash load while drying. With our separates... the washer holds a LOT more than our old combo. And we can be drying a full load while also washing a second one. Which means we can get work done on our laptops while simultaneously doing laundry, which works great for us (and, yes, we know that using a laundromat means you can often have all your loads washing/drying all at the same time... but we'd rather be at home in the RV). If you only plan on doing small loads... the combo W/D saves a lot of room. But if you'd rather not do frequent, smaller loads (to us that feels like we're doing laundry all the time), the stacked units are better. That's our $0.02! 😉

Our 2005 Mountain Aire has an 80” ceiling height, and the New Aire is 81.5”. Even though we’re both over 6’ tall, both RVs feel just fine to us (of course we’ve been used to an 80 inch ceiling height for the past 13+ years, and owners of newer rigs than ours with 84 or more inches headroom, might not be used to that. But for us it’s no problem at all.

Hi Bernie! The way to RV in a more financially feasible way is not to buy a new RV! Or at least don't buy one unless you can afford a larger downpayment that we could, and are prepared to suffer the depreciation. The only thing that makes it better is keeping a rig a long time, to flatten out the depreciation curve a bit more.

I'd like to get your perspective on the Forza 35t (Winnebago's small Pusher) etc.. 👍
@RVgeeks
6 жыл бұрын
Hi Tom! We've never been on a Forza, so can't speak about the quality. Just like Newmar, it's too bad they have so few floorplans in the size range we're interested in (the 34T and 36G) since SO much is about floorplan. Tank capacities on the 34T are 84 fresh, which is 9 more than the New Aire, so that's a plus. It has 54 gray (60 in the New Aire), and 48 black (40 in the New Aire) so those are reasonable comparable. The 34T does beat the New Aire by 15 gallons of fuel capacity (90 vs 75) and that's big plus. We toured the Winnie factory, and were impressed by the way they appear to be put together, but the quality of materials does seem more in line with a considerably less expensive rig than the New Aire, which is of course what you'd expect, since it is! A better comparison might be a Ventana LE, since that's more in the same price range. The Horizon is the one we love, because of the Euro styling. They just need to make it shorter!
@tomirwin4819

@RVgeeks
6 жыл бұрын
Newmar lists a 7,500 lb carrying capacity. Most important is the fact that the front axle is the exact same 14,600 lb axle that we now have on our 43 foot Mountain Aire. Since overweight front ends are the most common problem, we doubt that overloading a New Aire would be much of an issue. As far as cost, we just took a typical length and base price of a Ventana and calculated about $8,900 per foot. We did the same thing for a Mountain Aire, and it comes out to about $13,200 per foot. The New Aire comes in right in between at about $10,400 dollars per foot. We know that's not a very scientific way of figuring value, but at lease as far as length is concerned, the price falls along the continuum of Newmar's line-up.

When comparing a couple of similar rigs for quality, what should I look at?
@RVgeeks
6 жыл бұрын
Solidity of cabinetry, switches, furniture & flooring materials, fixtures (sinks, faucets, toilet, etc), the sound the basement doors and handles makes when operating/closing them, the fans (some have tiny little fans in larger openings vs the full-diameter ones). It's a whole sense of how solidly things are put together. Some rigs are obviously cheaper-made than others, even in the same price range.

It's kind of hard to explain without seeing an actual floorplan, but it includes (for us): king bed, separate washer & dryer, residential fridge, split bath with a sink in the "powder room" (toilet room) and the main, large bathroom sink & shower separate, table large enough for dinner for four (for real), layout that allows both us and any guests to access the bathroom without entering each other's sleeping space, ability to watch TV from the living room or while eating dinner, and of course enough cargo-carrying space. The New Aire is an impressive coach, but there were a few sacrifices to get down to that smaller size. Did you notice the shorter (in height) interior overhead cabinets? I would take a few inches taller coach to have those cabinets a bit taller. Also, the generous exterior basement storage came at the sacrifice of a diesel tank and a fresh water tank both reduced to 75 gal. As a boon docker, those are too small.
@RVgeeks
6 жыл бұрын
Hi Rick! We didn't notice any difference in cabinet height, but that's probably because our '05 was the last year before a 4" ceiling heigh increase. We did indeed notice the tank reductions. Going from our 150-gallon diesel tank to 75 would of course require a doubling of fuel mileage from our current 7, to 14 to remain the same. We doubt that's likely, but better fuel mileage will mitigate some of that loss of capacity. And the 900-1,000-mile range we've enjoyed is crazy long legs that we'd be okay without quite so much. Water, on the other hand, is another matter, and going from our current 105 to 75 would be less than desirable for sure. Unlike fuel, where a new rig can get better mileage, we're not suddenly going to start using less water for showers! LOL Might require a compromise, like a water bladder, and/or a composting toilet. All part of the weighting of pros and cons.
@meteor109

It is my understanding the 'improved' fuel mileage does not adequately compensate for the smaller tank size. I went instead with a Ventana 3715, which arrives in late June.
