I think about this clip a lot and I watch it again from time to time to remind me how great this is. It is obviously exaggerated for comedic effect, but this is how it should be done. So often I see people seeking relationship advice on the internet like "Help! My spouse does not want children, but I always wanted a big family. What do I do?" and it baffles me how people can enter a serious relationship without even once talk to their partner about their needs and expectations, where they are willing compromise and definite deal breakers for them. Love is great, but sharing a life IS a deal and there are terms and conditions that need to be negotiated.

This is a scene I remember from years ago when NewsRadio was on TV. Jimmy James is a devout capitalist but he's sweet, kind, thoughtful, patient, gives everyone a great deal of leeway despite his focus on making the radio station a bona fide commercial enterprise. What takes place in this clip is actually a triumph and quite sweet after watching his multiple attempts to approach this corporate lawyer. She is near the end of her transaction when he finally decides that the best approach is to be himself. This is who he is at his best and so she finally sees him not as a besotted buffoon but as a fraction of the man he truly is.

I’m 24 and very happily married for 2 years now because I had the sense to take this approach. I wish people my age didn’t think it was too “unromantic”! It’s so efficient! Everyone says they want love, but they won’t take the time figure out their deal-breakers, their expectations, what’s important them, and lead with that on the first few dates. TALK ABOUT expectations for children, work, vacations, chores, religion, and politics right at the start!! You’ll find out if you’ll be a good match without all the bullcrap, and not give yourself the time to get attached to someone you wouldn’t work well with. If the person MEETS all the boxes you need checked, THEN you can see if you also have chemistry, and if their habits and quirks drive you crazy. If they don’t, you’ve found a great and worthy marriage partner. It doesn’t have to be more complicated than that. It really doesn’t.
