Newton’s 3rd Law states that when an object exerts a force on a second object, the second object will exert an equal and opposite force on the first object. In this demonstration, a cart with a spring loaded pin is brought into contact with a second cart of equal mass. When the spring is activated, the two carts of equal mass move apart from each other with velocities of the same magnitude. When an additional mass is placed on one of the carts under the same circumstances, the more massive cart moves with a smaller velocity than the other cart. In this second case, the carts still experience equal and opposite forces; however, they experience unequal accelerations due to the mass differential between the two carts.
