We've come to a point that graphics are getting so close to looking real, that it's hard to make significant progress in them, because it takes orders of magnitude more processing power and development to do so.

It’s strange how they can make everything look so real except for the humans. I think it has more to do with the movement than the physical details of the face because they look like a photograph when they’re still, but we’re just so attuned to people, and people’s faces, that we can tell whenever something is slightly off with them.

The main things that give it away still are the stiff mouth movements and the body language. People make little micromovements, which these avatars don't do. Additionally, digital avatars don't account for things like kinetic energy and gravity when moving around. When we do something like wave, jump, or start walking, our mass takes a moment to get moving from a resting state or when changing direction because it needs to overcome inertia. This should scale based on mass, for example, the acceleration curve should look a lot different for an avatar that starts running than an arm that starts waving. Currently, it breaks the illusion every time a digital human makes a movement that doesn't account for the laws of motion. It's such a subtle thing, but our eyes and brains are well adapted at picking these things out. Until animators and game engines can master inertia, and clean up those mouth movements, we're going to see right through it, though it is definitely getting better, at least until they start moving and running their mouths lol.

Supposedly one of the best thing about this UE is they removing the need for assets optimizing. Reducing the polygon number for each particular scene has always been the main concern for 3d assets, but this time you can just throw whatever and the engine would have no problem with it. That and great global lighting would actually reduce the workload and hopefully would make games looks great even in the actual product (since people people tend to optimize as best as possible in tech demo and there's no point in doing that anymore now)

It’s weird… there’s always something off about digital humans when looking at their full body. I have never seen a full-body digital human that didn’t look off; I have no idea why. You can just tell I think it’s mainly in facial expressions, hair, and movement. It’s always unnatural. Skin also always seems to be lacking detail in all of the scenes; at least, it seems like that to me. Anything that slightly deviates from real-world physics immediately throws it all off, because if it doesn’t naturally interact with the world they way it should it’s disconnected. That’s difficult to do with humans.

See.... I was so so sceptical about this movie! I had such low expectations that it potentially helped my overall experience in hindsight but I also can’t help but think maybe it wasn’t just the low expectations. With that being said, I felt like this was quite refreshing, new and not entirely a copout. The overall story does a good job of making you feel like this continuation is actually a good thing, there are so many more twists than I thought there was gonna be, bringing down the predictability I thought the movie was going to have. Not to say that it wasn’t predictable though because there are some parts you just know, ygm? If they are planning to do a full trilogy again then I think it could be interesting, but I think they should’ve done this as a very limited series, split the movies into three parts and release them episodically, if they wanted to breach the modern times with maximum effort then making it easier to consume would probably have went a long way for them, still a really enjoyable experience once you get over the fact it is not YOUR matrix, not the one we all fell in love with many a year ago but instead it is the little brother that could have potential as the movies go on to get much more powerful and raw with the story telling. But my review is it’s definitely worth the watch, you already know it’s not the same so have your low expections and just enjoy the ride, it’s actually well done! It gets a solid 7.5/10 for me, room to grow, it’s obviously not quite the same and it’s missing the signature green tint.

The original Matrix actually didn't have the green tint. It premiered in normal colours. The green tint was later added in the blue ray version. There are actually 5+ different color variants of the movie. There is a cool video on it somewhere. I do agree that the green tint did make it iconic though and a shame they didn't add it in the new movie.

@@alexjustalex No, well they could’ve added some effect but the original film variant was released in 1999. The green blu ray version came out in 2008 or something. They did it with all 3 movies. There was a yellowish dvd version as well and later a remastered version. But all 3 movies were already out for ages when the first the green tint versions got released.

As someone who works with UE4/UE5, I can tell you there's no "Tricks" involved, I was told they had precalculated explosions, I'm not sure why when chaos can just replicate those with ease. Nanite is great for static objects, then if there's deformation the model is swapped on the fly, this tech is a pretty giant leap things will be able to run on toasters with it eventually because of how efficient it is.

@TheDictatorsKingdom

The funny thing about humanity is that you can't perfect it, because we as humans have the innate ability to be different. When you put somebody behind a desk and tell them to animate a specific person, that person will be unable to perfectly copy the person's movements, think of it like this, you take 10000 steps a day if you're a healthy active individual, each and every one of those steps is different and unique to you, as you use varied levels of stride, force, extension, etcetera. So, when somebody tries to animate you, or they put a mocap suit on you, there's going to either be the human error, or machine error, every single time. Not to mention the earlier stated point that as a whole we as humans will notice if something is wrong with a certain person, being real or unreal. There's actually videos of fake robotic chimps being introduced among other chimps and being ostricized as it is just seen as 'off'; animals that are intelligent enough can recognize real from unreal.

I think it's interesting how fallible our memories are. Events can be remembered differently and unless it's recorded we don't know which version is the real one. So trippy to talk to your family about something you're so sure happened one way and then everyone remembers a slightly different version.

Now that graphics can imitate real videographs almost perfectly, i am no longer excited to see the next generation imitate them even more perfectly (it was like that since some time ago). i am much more excited about the crazy visual styles that developers will come up with to stylize their games in never-before-seen ways: with the power that's needed to render billions of polygons you could instead go nuts with shaders to invent a new and stunningly creative style.

To me, it's still often pretty clear that it's fake, at least when it comes to the characters. It's not necessarily fake Keanu's hair that tipped me off, it's the slightly off facial muscle movements and the fact that his eyes look almost dead. And as soon as his eyebrows move in the other scenes, you can tell that the image quality of the skin immediately degrades.
