This is the best grafting process I have seen and used. I use plastic package wrap, it is less a problem for sticking to itself. My graft survival rate is about 95%. Just using rubber bands is about 75%. It is very good for small delicate cactus. It is perfect for moon and and sand dollar cactus. I use this for my slow growing seedlings.You are the best.

@mewtwoftw It is a mammillaria theresae. There are some different forms. This form sprouts more than the other forms. All forms turn more or less red specially when kept dry (as during the mid winter). Most people treat them to gently. They are easy to propogate by cuttings. They like water early in the season (even if temperature is below zero celsius)

@Defekcija The white sand is birdy sand. It is fine dry sand used for caged birds. It has a anise smell. Anise is supposed to be desinfecting. The plants will be rooting even withoud water. I would say wait 1 to 3 weeks. Young pads are more proun to rot than older ones if you supply water to soon.

@GinaWMakeupArtist The oldest plants i have on this type of grafting stock (Opuntia fragilis) are a couple of years old now. No problems until now. Also Opuntia fragilis as a plant i have some for 20 years now, so they are quit permanent. I don't like to burry them in de ground, because i don't want to have the grafting surface into contact with the soil. You could however cover it with stones. Degrafting can be done but is dependent upon the species. I will think about a vid on that

Hi Michael. I had the question once before and rethinking it i think it is a good idea. I have to wait though till spring to demonstrate it for some different species. Do you have particular species in mind?
@michaelmartinez6

I'm pretty new to the cactus collecting hobby so I'm not very familiar with what species would make a prime example for the video. However, I'm sure you have a couple in mind that would be good. Also, I think it would be great if you could put in general remarks on when to de-graft, common mistakes for first timers and how to avoid them, how to root the scion, and what medium to put the scion in after the de-graft.

I always try and reply to ALL comments :) i think it's part of the deal :) I don't like when i have a question and i don't get a responce so i don't wanna be "THAT GUY" lol ... so if you're grafting you need a root stalk... or at least another plant your attaching your cutting to... otherwise you are just propagating cuttings.. nothing wrong with just propagating by cuttings. :)

Monica Bianchi Hi Monica. The soil starts dry. after one or two weeks first roots will develop, depending on the time of year you are grafting (may-juli is the best period for rooting). So you can start watering after a week. Soil should be a little fine (not to course). We like to add some birdy sand (anis smell).

I would wait till the scion has grown to a size that it big enough. Big enough meaning in this context that it has enough reserves to survive making roots. How big depends on the specie. If a specie needs a lot of time to make roots, you will need a larger scion. Do you have a particular specie in mind?
@ducarraro4907

You can try all species. Instead of Opuntia fragilis as a grafting stock people report good results using pieces of Selenicereus or Hylocereus.I would graft cacti that have a vunerable root system lijke Pediocactus, Sclerocactus, Toumeya or if you want to speed up grow and seed collection.

Gymnocalycium i don't know, i never tried them. I don't think you cab beat Pereskiopsis with antoher grafting stock. But Perskiopsis is a temporary grafting stock.
