Congratulations to the new Sangita Kalanidhi! This time, a truly deserving one has been chosen for the age-old token of excellence in Karnatik Music.
I have thought a hundred times about what my next upload should be. To be honest, I was so glued to my last upload of Neyveli Santhanagopalan's kAnada alapanai that there were times I thought to myself, I shouldn't upload anymore. This was due to the fact that that is the recording I have listened to the most number of times in my life and there is probably nothing more I can convey to you musically. It captured my idea of art music and the way I envision music in my head so perfectly. But here we go again!
This rendition of nAdupai is very close to my heart for many reasons. Madhyamavati, Layam, Tyagaraja and Santhanagopalan amalgamate so beautifully and seemlessly into one artistic being! This is so rare, and when it happens, it's bliss to say the least to a seeker. Watch out for the neraval, swaram! It's magical to say the least. This composition has always been close to my heart and remains the quintessential Madhyamavati from the master himself.
This rendition is from a 2011 December season concert at the Madras Music Academy.
I would like to borrow TM Krishna's words for Sanjay Subrahmanyan on the latter's Sangita kalanidhi from a few years back. Awards themselves get recognition or get underpinned when they are conferred on some people, and this holds water in the case of Neyveli Santhanagopalan.
