I'm appalled that Dennis Byrd wasn't mentioned. He had a severe spinal injury. His lower spine went in 2 different directions. He was told he was gonna be paralyzed for rest of his life, but with rehab n PT for almost 25yrs, he was able to walk again.

I’ll never forget seeing 49ers Bryant Young break his leg from an accidental hit from his own team mate Ken Norton Jr... This was back in the days when they would show you the replay. Madden himself I believe was calling the game at the time. I doubt I was barely 12-15 years old… Young was a defensive lineman with all of his weight on one leg while making a tackle. His teammate, a middle inside linebacker.. Enters in on the tackle, ( honestly - probably unnecessarily sadly, these are always the worst…! ), and his helmet strikes the lineman’s shin.. Just below the knee and the next thing you know your seeing a Super Sized grown Man rive in pain on the ground… Very humbling to witness if you have any care for another and or decency about you. Bryant Young, Dana Stubblefield, and Ken Norton Jr… One of the most Dominate combinations of players to watch work together to own the middle of the field on the defensive side of the Ball. Oh., if only Ron Lott was a few years later playing at Strong Safety for the same team.. Was a pleasure to witness you Men do what you do… Thank You.. Live by your Heart & Mind and be safe.

Not sure exactly how to relate this....that celebration injury brought one up from my memory. I won't give any clues to where it occured. Wasn't on the field during a game. IS football related and a true tragedy. Was working in a medium sized "major" city that at least had a Level 1 Trauma Center. We were stationed in our ambulance in the downtown area on the edge of the "hood". Actually in the area of 3 separate hoods with the associated turf wars. Worked 24hrs on, 48hrs off. Manys the time the 48 off wasn't enough time to recover. Many a shift i never sat down long enough to take my boots off. On this particular night, a little after midnight we got a call kinda on the edge of a neighborhood of houses, not public housing. 21yr old black male possibly not breathing, then possible CPR in progress, then more updates. We were only a few minutes away so i told dispatch to chill. That we would figure it out. We are taught as medics, police, fire, etc to overview a scene when we arrive, to assess what we have and to be careful and not jump in blindly and necome part of the problem. As we came rolling up i saw a lot of vehicles parked everywhere. Yard, street, next door yard. Nicely dressed young folks mostly. Brain sez "party". A local college athlete had a shot at the Pros. From what i found out later he was unbelievable athlete but like in most sports, jobs, anything, when it comes easy maybe we don't appreciate it as much. In our area if a kid can play the schools don't even care if he or she can read. Get paid to play in highschool. When we got there wasn't much outside lighting but fire dept rolled up with us and couple police units so lit up pretty good. Enough to see a bad scene. Had some hysterical folks and that can interfere with patient care. Speaking of patience, bear with me. You ain't never heard of this. Well, hope not anyway. Surelthis isn't common. So i locate our patient and i see that he is soaking wet. Some people were attempting CPR but he didn't need the whole CPR part . His heart was beating but he wasn't breathing BUT actually the compressions they were trying to do, in my humble opinion, helped saved his life. Remember this.....the compressions cause the lungs to push air out and pull air in on release when the lungs expand. In a CPR situation if you're by yourself just do compressions, after making sure you have a clear airway. You're pumping blood with oxygen in it to the brain. Winner. I have plenty of help by now. My paramedic was the best at getting patients intubated. The tube down the throat so we could breate for him. So I'm lookin around and spot a small kiddy pool with maybe a foot of water in it. Parked next to it was an old bass boat with that platform in the front. Even now i can see it sitting not even close to level. The u Can you picture it and what happened? Yep. Our patient, the already built like a pro player, had been partying hard, drinking for sure, and.....it makes me tear up now, climbed up on the boat and dove into the kiddy pool head first. When you arrive at any ER in the country and no matter what your problem if the ambulance crew hasn't cut all your clothes off, they will have you naked in bout 5 seconds or less. I think the record is 1.5. I was older than all but a couple of people on the entire 911 ambulance service. PT was not required buy from playing sports and law enforcement and bein military private contractor i had to stay in decent shape plus from accumulated injuries and surgeries if i didn't stay in shape i didn't walk. So i had been around some folks in great shape but not like this and i knew he was probably born like this. Didn't have to work out. Massive chest and arms. No neck, well you get it, whole upper body. Tiny waist, thighs as big as MY waist. Nurses were peeking around the entrance. They had never seen a human specimen like him cept maybe on TV at bodybuilding contest. But i suspected the sad, terrible truth. BTW, he was unconscious when we got to him and had not regained consciousness when we had to leave for another call. I asked the traums surgeon "what's up with our guy"? He slid the x-rays up on the light thing. He pointed to what's now known as "The Superman Break". His neck was broken at the point where the heart keeps beating on its own but you can't breathe on your own and paralyzed from the neck down. Damnnn. Everything goin for him and one foolish mistake, like we all make but not exactly like his. So all of us working together, even his friends and loved ones, saved him but did we do him a favor? I know that's not our choice to make, and we, my partner and i, never did. If there was any chance at all of getting a person back we did our best. As a lowly EMT i fought for my patients after seeing some die parked in the hallway because the ER was packed. Nobody cared what i thot but if i saw something they missed i decided if they wouldn't treat my patient i would carry them to another hospital. So i did it. Reckon I'm the only EMT or Paramedic to do that in the U.S. won't go into whole but a new ER Doc wouldn't give my medic permission to administer the drug a patient needed to help save them. Then the second we rolled him in the ER the doc ordered the nurses to give that exact medication. I didn't curse, outloud back then but wish i had. PTSD has damaged the speech filter between my brain and my mouth and sometimes whatever i think is what comes out so i just had to settle with "yeah, that med would have really helped 40 minutes ago. The doc then tried to intubate the young man. Couldn't do it but refused to stop tryin. Tube was too big and started comin out bloody. Damaged tissues which was causing swelling. Nurses were crying. My medic was pissed and sittin in ambulance doin paperwork. Told him to get in there and tube that kid who had been seizing nonstop for over an hour by now. He replied "phumem". "Yeah them, not that kid". He tried. Looked over me with the strangest look "he's (the idiot doctor) done too much damage. I can't get it. So i made executive decision....."Ya'll get him unhooked and back on our stretcher. We're goin to Children's Hospital". I figured they were his only chance. Only reason we were at the other place was in those circumstances we had to go to nearest hospital by law. No tellin how many folks that kills everyday. Called my captain to tell him and he said we couldn't move patients from one hospital to another. We were the 911 guys. "Fine. I quit and I'm stealing an ambulance". It was so bad a nurse from that hospital rode with my medic to help. The "boy" was bigger than me but the people at Children's are just that good on any size but i was truly afraid there would be brain damage from inadequate breathing and lack of oxygen. His mom brought him by our quarters a couple months later and he seemed to have survived ok. So when cancer hit me the first time, lost right kidney, my reward for workin my buot off to get back in shape, the county took my job away. Guess my reputation of fighting for folks didn't help I would usually check up on my patients that jad terrible injuries but we at least got em to the hospital, or the helicopter, alive but i didn't have the heart to follow up on that young man. If he ever even regained consciousness there was no good news. How could there be? "Well, they saved you and your gonna live". Yes, to my and to most of us's nightmare. Totally paralyzed. If he's alive today he is living with a machine breathing for him. I couldn't even face his family. I know in football, in all contact sports especially, injuries are gonna happen in every game but we see that many of those could have been avoided. The NFL showed how much they care with that $500,000 settlement. Of course i guess most of all one of you that might read this that there are more injuries and more serious ones in Cheerleading. And for what. Gonna go pro. It's a gymnastics show. Yeah i like to watch some of em but i cringe everytime i see a girl over 40'in the air. Anyway, i hope the young man, that was over 20yrs ago made it and is makin it thru the pain and heartache. I'm dying now from 5th cancer that was caused by the cancer surgeon. I'm blind in L eye from another POS surgeon. Life aint easy but ya can't give up. My mantra when i used to could jog. Now i can barely walk FROM STUPID DOCTOR INJECTION IN LOWER BACK. All of these in a year. "No pain no gain" "No quittin don't stop" To set the pace of my steps. Probly won't get to use it again. Ya'll take care. I been depressed a bit lately but don't follow my example. Don't EVER give up. The doctors don't always know for sure. When you hear a doctor telling your wife that you are dying, soon don't give up get pissed. Maybe the adrenaline helped. That was 1978 so I've had a lot of extra years to be thankful for. Hard to let go tho. If you have people you love around you take a picture every day with your heart. Maybe they get stored in a cloud also.
