That would be Bobby Orr, but I agree Lidstrom is up there.

@nsalerno91

MrJuiceboxhero Yes and No. Lidstrom for the most part was an Offensive guy but what made him so special and what got him id say at least 40% of his assists in his career was his initial D-zone outlets passes. Passing is offensive but not when you are turning defense into offense. Lid was second to none at finding the first pass.

Entering the locker room at JLA is amazing. All the legends and Stanley Cups, Detroit Red Wings are an elite franchise with the history and tradition. Still had Pavel Datsyuk on the team before he went back to Russia. On a side note, I was at the game in Dallas on the second half of this back to back. As a wings fan, I’ve been spoiled for most of my life (40 years old right now).

Im not a Detroit fan and I'm a die hard Sabres fan but one thing that I can say is that this man is in a league of his own as far as a player, human being and a parent. He will without a doubt be missed not only by red wings fans but by all of us NHL fans. I own 3 authentic Ryan Miller Jerseys and if I was gonna pay any money for another one there is without a question that #5 C will be it. Niklaus Lidsrtom you will be missed and you earned a future hall of fame trip.

I love how humble he is. When you think of a player like him, you'd think he's got a huge ego. But he doesn't and that's what I love most about him. He takes time to actually meet fans, always a team player, never wants the glory all to himself. I'm glad he was with Detroit, and I got to see him play. Happy retirement Lidstrom!

The thing I loved about watching Nick kind of sums up my love for hockey and the hockey community, even in the intensity of the NHL. Every time you see someone press him in his zone, even if they had a charging start or could possibly make a huge hit on him, they'd always back off a little bit. I think it was not only the knowledge that he was a great defenseman who could use other's momentum against them and probably either take the hit and make a play, but just out of respect for who he was, no one would take cheap hits on him or just hit him for the sake of making a hit. It was really cool to watch and I was definitely blessed to grow up in Detroit seeing a role model work so hard and make it look so easy

It’s unfortunate they never showed Peter Forsberg the same respect. You had one of, if not the arguably best hockey hockey player ever end his career early due to injuries. The Avs - Wings rivalry was a huge part of my youth and Lidstrom and Forsbergs were the best part of it.

Thank you for posting this. Nick Lidstom was the epitome of class, talent, leadership, humility, grace and performance in a professional athlete. Name another - in any sport - who accomplished so much in such a dignified manner, i.e., garnering 100% respect and admiration throughout his/her league, for 20 years.

Big time Sharks fan here. For the record: Nick Lindstrom was the best. Great Hockey player but following the 36 hours, he seems to be even a better human being. Also being a beer league defensive hockey player, I strive to play the game like him (at least in my mind lol) I think its long over due for me to add a Lindstrom sweater to my closet.

Orr, Orr, Orr. Be serious. Orr was great in how far the game had gotten back then, but he isn’t even close to being as complete as Lidstrom. Lidstrom is the best defenseman ever and anyone disputing that is either reluctant to admit that a European player is the best, or simply doesn’t understand hockey. Orr is the Godfather of defense and Lidstrom is the God of defense.
