The losses at home to the Sabres and the Red Wings were massive. Those are the 2 games we're going to look at and sadly, blame for the Canucks missing the playoffs. They would have been 2 points up on Dallas instead of 2 back after tonight, though the Stars would still have 3 games in hand. And they would be 1 up on Las Vegas with 1 game in hand instead of 3 back with a game in hand.

Canucks 4, Stars 1: Big win bolsters playoff chase --------------- The Vancouver Canucks’ playoff dream lives. Playing their third road game in four nights, the Canucks got massive saves from Thatcher Demko - 15 in the third period alone - and timely goals from Elias Pettersson to win a crucial game against the Dallas Stars 4-1 on Saturday night at American Airlines Arena. The Canucks are chasing Dallas for the playoffs. The Stars still have three games in hand on Vancouver, but the Canucks’ win pulled them within two points of Dallas. And it was a big win for Vancouver as the Vegas Golden Knights came back earlier in the day against the Chicago Blackhawks to win 5-4 in overtime, putting them a point up on Dallas and into the final playoff spot in the Western Conference, but they’ve also played one more game than the Canucks and four more than Dallas. Here’s what we learned… Which was bigger? Esa Lindell hitting the post on a wide-open net or the Thatcher Demko save with his foot on Lindell and sprawled on the ice moments before? Demko’s save will be talked about for years, no doubt. Wrist is good Pettersson’s wrist was bothering him earlier this month but it d oesn’t look like it is now. He put power into his one-timed shot on the power play that tied the game late in the second and fired a wrist shot off the right wing past Jake Oettinger to put his team into the lead early in the third. How the puck got there The puck had left the Canucks’ zone and Stars players were still inside the zone when the puck came back in but because it was off a Canucks’ possession, it wasn’t offside. It was a busted breakout - Alex Chiasson couldn’t control the puck in the neutral zone and effectively played it back into the Canucks’ zone - that sent the puck the wrong way it ended up on Jacob Peterson’s stick, who flipped a backhand past Demko. Playing tired Saturday’s game was the third game in four nights for the Canucks - as punishing a sequence where athletes burn massive calories in a game and rest and recovery is difficult. After playing at altitude Wednesday in Denver, then only getting to bed at 4 a.m. Thursday morning ahead of that evening’s game in St. Paul, Minn., the Canucks were assuredly exhausted by the time they arrived at their hotel in Dallas early Friday morning. Yes, instead of maybe staying over in St. Paul on Thursday night, sleeping in and then flying Friday midday to Dallas, the Canucks chose to fly to Big D after Thursday’s game. No matter where they were, with a game on Saturday night, Friday was always going to be about recuperation. “I find (the third game) always the hardest game,” head coach Bruce Boudreau said before the game. “You can still get by in the second game on adrenalin. The third game once you get in - and you get in late too - you’re tired. You usually do nothing the next day, sort of a really lethargic (day). So you have to have a good morning skate to get them out of it. And our morning skate was pretty lethargic today. I told them that so hopefully, they’ll you know, perk up a little bit more by game time.” The Canucks didn’t have much energy in the first period and were better in the second. The Stars, who were playing their fifth game in eight nights showed their own sore legs. The Stars managed to pour it on in the third but between Demko’s heroics and a trio of hit posts, couldn’t tie the game up. Four Have no doubt about Bo Horvat’s guts at crunch time. His empty net goal sealed the game. It was the fourth game in a row that the captain had scored. J.T. Miller scored the fourth goal of the game moments later as the deflated Stars went meekly into the night.

Elias Pettersson had two goals and a pair of milestones as the Vancouver Canucks rallied past the Dallas Stars 4-1 on Saturday night in Dallas. ------------------------------------- Pettersson's second goal was his 20th of the season and the 200th career point for the fourth-year player from Sweden. "It's definitely cool to get those milestones," he said. Pettersson started a three-goal barrage in the third period. Bo Horvat and J.T. Miller also scored in the frame for the Canucks. Thatcher Demko stopped 35 shots. BOX SCORE: Canucks 4, Stars 1 Jacob Peterson scored in the second period, and Jake Oettinger made 27 saves for the Stars. The Canucks put the game away with two goals in the final 1:06. Horvat scored into an empty net and Miller completed the scoring. Canucks pick up key win behind Petterson's big night: Pettersson scores a pair to lead Canucks over Stars Elias Pettersson scored twice as Vancouver defeated Dallas 4-1 Saturday night. 1:29 After a scoreless first period, the Stars took the lead on Peterson's goal at 5:42 of the second. Vancouver tied the score about 10 minutes later when Oliver Ekman-Larsson knocked down a puck in the Vancouver end. In the second period, Pettersson carried the puck to the other end and sent a wrist shot from the right faceoff circle past Oettinger. Vancouver's 32nd-ranked penalty-killing unit stopped all of Dallas' power plays. Demko made four saves on the Stars' third man advantage, and shortly afterward Dallas defenceman Esa Lindell missed an open net by hitting the left goalpost from short range. "Obviously, we got a good bounce off the post there," Demko said. "A little bit of luck, just battling to keep the puck out of the net. Canucks coach Bruce Boudreau was blunt. "I just kept waiting for it to go in the net. Quite frankly, I've never seen so many open nets a team missed in succession. When that happened, I thought, 'Karma's with us tonight."' Pettersson even helped on defence on Lindell's shot. "I wasn't in the right position. I should have held the middle. I just tried a little desperation slash. I got a piece of [Lindell's] stick." Eriksson Ek's OT winner seals Wild victory over Canucks Russian, Belarusian players enjoy CHL life, but potential import draft ban looms So, instead of being in a tie game, Dallas gave up the two late goals. "When we needed a good power play we got it," Stars coach Rick Bowness said. "We just didn't score. We get that second goal, we're not having this conversation." On the game's opening goal, Jamie Benn slid a pass from the right faceoff circle into the slot for Peterson, who went to his backhand and beat Demko with a shot inside the left post. Vancouver had the game's first three shots on goal before Thomas Harley appeared to score for the Stars. However, the puck deflected off Demko's leg and the left goalpost but didn't cross the goal line. That began a streak of eight shots by Dallas. The scoreless first period ended the Stars outshooting the Canucks 14-9. The game's first penalty came at 15:10 of the second period, when Dallas defenceman Jani Hakanpaa went off for holding. Fifteen seconds later, Pettersson scored on the power play.
