Not even. Dude was robbed of being in the GOAT talks. He's probably my 1st or 2nd pick in any fantasy draft (Having watched the entirety of Kane's career, I have to pick him because he brings EVERYONE up to his level when he's one the ice and he draws 6 pairs of eyeballs too. If the most complete player I've ever seen is off the board, I build around the best scorer I can find). To do what he did, in the era he did, and after his career was that of someone in shambles and way over with his injury list he was a top player/scorer in the league. If he plays in this era and has even half as healthy a career everyone is looking off a his scoring record across the pond, not Gretzky's.

It's a shame human trash cans like Stevens were allowed to crack people in the skull at will without repercussion. With all we have learned over the past 20 years about head trauma, concussions, CTE, even this video made in Dec of 2021 says "known for his booming hits" like it's some sort of badge of honor to cheap shot someone in the head. Stevens was a disgrace to the sport....every bit the clown that Matt Cooke, Sean Avery, or Marty McSorely was.

Peter Forsberg finished a playoffs game with a busted spleen. Later, during the celebrations, his coach sent him to the doctor because he looked pale. Turned out he had 2 litres of blood in his stomach and was a pair of houres from dying. He also had cronic problems with his feets, weekends where reservated for operations. His foot wouldn't stay in his skate, no matter how hard he tied it.He went to such extreme measures as drilling holes in his skates and tying ropes around his toes trying to strech out the foot by brute force. The pain he played through must have been devastating.

I was at Game 6 2003 SC at The Pond (not Honda Centre) I was just coming back thru the tunnel with a tray of nachos and 2 beers. I pulled up at the end to view the action and wait for a stoppage to go to my seat. Right when i stop and watch, Kariya was skating towards (opposite that TV angle) and THUD! .....Stevens steps into and just levels him It was seriously the loudest hit i had ever heard live, the whole section gasped. He was out cold. People thought he was going to the hospital not returning The crowd were amazed he came back, and when he sniped that slapshot the place went ballistic. I was indeed a great moment Aaaannnnd then they totally choked Game 7

I’ve always said that when it comes to dealing with injuries hockey players are on a whole different level. Even compared to football players these guys are insane. Most of the injuries we just heard about would not only keep an athlete out for an extended period of time, but most would be in a hospital bed

My biggest resentment about NHL still today. Falling 11 pts short to the 1000 club, falling 1 game short to a Stanley Cup (not even remembering the game in question and the following weeks), a blazing carreer cut short by concussions and dirty plays. In the actual game, I think Kariya could challenge McDavid. If the 90's were not what they were, I think he would have been the highest scorer of his era. Kariya, and I got to add Bure, were always top ten among players who were much bigger (Eric Lindros, Peter Forsberg, Mario Lemieux, Jaromir Jagr, Teemu Selanne, John Leclair...).

Not to be picky on the situation, but you got a few small details about the Kariya situation wrong, Paul was knocked out for 53 seconds and came back about 10min of game time later in the 2nd period. His goal, was the 5th duck goal in the 5-2 win , although pretty crucial as the devils were pushing hard and the goal turned the tide, it wasn’t the game winner. And this may just be perception, but it was much, much later that we the fans would find out about how bad Kariya’s concussion really was. To be close, it was the TSN feature “Surfacing” done in summer 2017 before Paul’s induction into the Hall of Fame. To clarify, this is just me being nitpicky and not intended to discredit the video. It was very well done 👍

I remember an NBA player being carried off the court crying in pain because the broken AC in the arena gave him a leg cramp. That same year an NHL player lost the very top tip of his ear. I don't remember how it happened, but there was a lot of blood. He went to the dressing room, got himself stitched up (probably without being numbed first, because, you know, hockey), went back on the ice and scored the game winning goal.

Don't forget Maurice Richard in 1952 Semi Finals he was crunched by Leo Labine and I forget the other defender, and he was out, but he came back and wound up scoring the winning goal in Game 7, he wouldn't remember the game at all, but it would lead to one of the greatest hockey pictures ever of Richard and Bruins goalie Sugar Jim Henry shook hands, both battered with injuries, Henry had two black eyes and a broken nose, and Richard had a bandage above his eyes.

Blew up like a balloon within minutes but my guess is besides the adrenaline for Bobby Baun...It would have hurt more to take the foot out of the skate given the near instant swelling he would have had.

Your probably right, sadly. But I just hope beyond hope, that somehow he stopped one concussion early and somehow is able to sustain a normality late in life. I just have a hard time believing he will be just fine. Just hope it doesn't end up being debilitating. Shame how his career ended. He was literally a phone call away and the contract already printed ready to be signed by him to come back to anaheim reunite with selanne for one last ride. And teemu had a great 2010-11 season with over 30 goals. 31 I think. How great would that duo been just to watch one last go round. Oh well just wasn't meant to be sadly. He ended up not signing because his doctor said one more big head injury and its a wrap. So he had to retire instead. Selanne has told this story a few times

kariya was quite a player. Too bad that hit and subsequent concussions took his game away. Later in his career he became just a perimeter player who would just get the puck and give it back too afraid to do what he did best when he got the puck becoming gun shy for fear of that big hit. And that wasn't even the worst scott stevens hit. The one he laid on slava kolzlov coming across the middle in gm. two of the '95 finals-a hit that bounced him off the ice was a nas-tee hit. How he got up and finished that finals i'll never know. I think his ears may still be ringing from that hit.
