Language learning is a journey of accumulation, not an instant transformation.

Absolutely true. Learning for meaning. Lots of meaningful inputs. Excitement. These are very important for people who are over 40 and want to learn another language.
Bro, your experienced understanding of learning English is quite useful and essential. I majored in IT too, immigrated to Australia 12 years ago. With over two decades of learning English since I was small, but I still had great difficulty of communicating with local Aussie at the beginning, after 5-6 years surviving as a immigrant with a lot of reading and talking that helped a lot, afterwards I could communicate with any English speaker. But I never talk with others about the bullshits and their locals interests.
