Arriving for the first time at Managua Augusto Cesar Sandino International Airport (MGA) in Nicaragua, was a bit of a painful experience after travelling 24 hours to get there, but with great patience comes great rewards! By far my biggest tip for you is to get yourself a seat at the front of the plane! That's right, you want to be the first person off the plane and don't waste any time getting to the customs officers. Once you reach the first set of hurdles, which is the arrivals officers, you will notice that takes an extremely long time to process each individual to get through to the baggage area. If your at the back of the line (I was) then your in for a long wait! After you finally get through, they Xray every single bag while you stand there watch. While this goes by pretty fast , this officers decision as to whether or not the bag is to be searched is critical. To avoid this I suggest not having any camera equipment or large electronics in your checked bag. They searched through my carry on on the spot and gave it the green light. However, they marked my bag tag on my checked bag to get searched, the only reason I can think of is that I had a trave CPAP machine in there. She was really eying up the Xray. No matter the cause, this was a horrible sentence! When I arrived at the lineup for bags to be search there was only a handful of people in line to have their luggage checked. It was a good 30 minutes before the line moved 1 person. 9 employees were there at the table where they checked the bags, however, at any given time only 2 people were actually checking anything. The other 7 were enjoying (probably my KZitem channel) on their phones.
It was second to last to be checked and I was in line a good 2 hours, fatigued and HANGRY! While I was second to last, I was by far the last person out of there. They kept running all my bags through the Xray, they may have picked up on ungrateful vibes on my behalf, I usually am not a disgruntled passenger, but this was insanely over doing it I thought. And my feelings were starting to show up on the outside. After all said and done, it was short ride to the hotel and reasonably priced. An easy check in followed by a well deserved nap. I was laying there thinking never again! However my tune was quick to change after I got some air under my wings and got a taste of what this magnificent country of Nicaragua was all about!
Another option, and something I will likely do on my next visit, is to fly into Guanacaste Airport LIR in the neighboring country of Costa Rica. Liberia is only a stone throw away from the Nicaragua boarder, and talking to other travelers, the land border is far less draining on a fatigued traveler. There are much better flight options as well, at least in 2024 there is!
