In my opinion, The Nice was better than ELP : fresher, more focussed, less bombastic and nevertheless, often, absolutely brillant. I hate for example all the Palmer's comments about Brian Davison. This one was humble but very efficient and both, Jackson and him , delivered the "basic line" that Keith needed for his amazing acting & virtuosity.

there was no other group that could mix a Bob Dylan song with the music of Bach or any other classis composer , they were truly the start of prog classic rock

I would agree a bit with you if you didn’t make it a definitive statement. “No other group”. Dylan was covered by so many and there were so many talented musicians just experimenting cross band pollination mid tours and mid jams. I know this has heavy keys but so did Yes (less psychedelic), Queen could have opera-sized it Or Jerry and Merl Keystone style. They got lots of jazz blues fusion so Mayall and the Blues Breakers. I do admit this is a great version and goes off in diff directions and is cool. really glad to have heard it and they jam and have fun doing it

mellotronage: The first time I saw them 'Live' was at the NJF Festival in Windsor back in August 1967. So O'List was in the band too. They were PP Arnold's backing band at the time, but they played for about 15 minutes before she came on. Within months they were headlining at The Marquee. The first time I saw them there, Yes were the support group! People think that 'In The Court Of The Crimson King' is the first Prog album, but 'The Thoughts Of Emerlist Davjack' pre-dates it by over a year. So does the Tomorrow album!

Done before the advent of polish. As we used to say, it was real (no pretense). Thank you, Keith, Lee, Brian. Timeless. One that I hope will be continued to be played 300 years toward the future. Seeing this video made me realize what it must have felt like to watch an early impressionist paint a masterwork.

well,as someone who saw the nice in their early days,i was so disappointec when i saw the isle of wight 1970 2nd concert, and apart from rondo it was unexciting pomp rock techo bombast,and when he started rubbing the mood on his lower parts it became a bit silly.

I have to really disagree Chris - seems to me The Nice would have been another second level prog band from that era (a la Camel, Curved Air, Gentle Giant, Nektar) instead of a top level band (Yes, Genesis). I think Keith split because guys at the level of Jackson and Davison couldn't match the ultra high level of musicianship that Lake and Palmer could, thereby matching and challenging Keith.
@LordGreystoke

The nice could not have progressed further in the 70s. Keith found the level of talent he was searching for with Carl and Keith and blew Nice out of the water with the creation of ELP.

Always loved their version! On "Nice", even after 38-odd years since first hearing that version, I can't tell: the part in which Emerson plays the Bach passage has always sounded like a pipe organ. Anyone know whether he switches to a pipe organ for it, or does he stay on the Hammond L-100 (or A-105)?

Greatest jazz rock combo band ever and all without electronics and synthesisers .Blinky Davison far superior drummer than Carl Palmer and without a thousand drums in front of him. Lee Jackson raw and Joe Cocker type of voice made The Nice vocals . Keith is just the greatest keyboard player ever .Adaptation of classical and other musicians music mind blowing 😨 was lucky to have seen them live 4 times. I miss them but their music lives on and gaining recognition .🎵🎶🎹

Not as polished as the Fillmore Live take that followed "Rondo". But-still, Emerson left no doubt who was Boss on The Hammond. Unfortunately-the videographers continued to focus on his sidemen. Were a guitarist working as hard as Emerson, the camera wouldn't leave him.

but you don't have to see it, just hear him play, that's the difference between guitar players and Keith Emerson, it's effortless, but Lee and Brian deserve to be there, they laid the foundation that the whole song is built on.

This truly illustrates how Davy O'List only got in the way. I love the trio version of The Nice; I think the guitar (or guitarist) was a useless appendage. They went from being a typical 60's sounding band to a force to be reckoned with the departure of O'List. I don't get it when people preferred the band with him. He wasn't a good player & his sound was thin and a parody of bad rock guitar as possibly heard by our parents at that time. (As in, "turn that terrible crap off !!) 😎 They grew by leaps & bounds without him. I almost feel bad about saying this, but it's true, where my ears are concerned...

So painful not to be able to see the three of them working out together. Just put the camera on them, a full shot of the band and let us watch. No extreme close ups. But no camera director ever seemed to understand this. Such a simple thing but the camera direction was always in the hands of imbeciles. British or American groups. It was always the same silly thing.
