This is why we need someone on this show similar to Al Reynolds on TGIF to give some context before someone blindly speaks on a topic. In reference to Morgan Freemans comments on black history month as well as being black he said he doesn’t like the idea of black history month being relegated to one month and the shortest one at that. Then when it comes to him not subscribing as “African American “ he went on to say “what does it really mean? Most black people in this part of the world are Mongrels. And you say Africa as if its a country and not a continent “. Lets start giving a little background on these topics so no one is painted a certain way. Morgan didn’t say anything different than what alot of us black people believe in regards to “black history month” or the term African American.

While every other person of color is referred to by the "country" they come from African Americans don't have the luxury of knowing what country within the continent of Africa they actually come from. First off, when announcing an actor on an interview or speaking of an actor on a show or documentary, the production always tends to put a label in front of a person of African descent. They never bother to put titles in front of the name of a European Caucasian descent person. You never heard “the talented white actor John White” for example. Or you never hear them say, “the multi-talented Caucasian actor Suzy Mae”. So in Morgan Freeman’s case, he grew up in a time where he was of course labeled as many different changeable terms throughout his young life and his career. Let’s be frfr! I’m 51 and in my half a century self, I’ve lived through being labeled many different titles to identify myself. I NEVER HAD A SAY AS TO HOW I WANTED TO BE LABELED. For gods sake, I know y’all even remember when they used to call us “Afro-Americans!” AFRO?! Are you kidding me!? So I feel like changing the narrative and taking back your POWER as to what nationality and ethnicity you want to be identified as or putting your foot down and saying, “hey! I am just me! I’m an actor! My name is Morgan Freeman! Address me as that first or address me as that only in these instances”, is smart and it is freeing and it not in light of the ridiculous of the identity and what is identify as climate today. What he said was very important and makes extreme sense. It does not mirror what these other groups of ppl whether it’s millennials, gen-z’s, gen-x’s, trans ppl, whatever other radical that’s up in an uproar today being unnecessarily sensitive about crap that don’t even matter nor make sense and trynna force their views into your home and head. Imma find and watch it to see what context or prompt caused him to say whatever it was he actually said bc we all know the producers of Cocktails with Queens and TeaGIF will say anything and Claudia will just go with it bc sometimes she don’t think. She like looking stupid I guess

Another way of viewing what Morgan is saying: we “Americans” with melanin didn’t choose the label of “African American” we were labeled what they chose to label us which first was the N word then it was Colored People. I don’t agree with the labels they chose for us either. I do not believe he means he doesn’t want to be an American born with high volumes of melanin. How about people with melanin choose our own label and not the labels chose by people based on how they see us. Caucasians don’t have to choose a label of Caucasian American. I believe there is another way to view what he is saying that doesn’t mean anything negative towards people with high quantities of melanin.

I appreciate having Black American History Month is a country that is actively working overtime to erase our historical contributions to the nation from schools and history books. As for what to call me, I prefer BLACK. I'm clearly a Black person of African heritage, but I've lived around the world and our culture which we built from the ground up is distinct and unique, not unlike our cousins in the diaspora from South America and the Caribbean who are also descendants of African slaves. I do not identify as African. I live amongst plenty and we have little in common beyond our skin color, not to mention there are hundreds of African ethnicities to consider. As Black Americans have our own separate culture and contributions to civilization and I will not erase that at the expense of connecting to a name that hasn't been ours since we were torn from the continent and built the civilization that is now the United States of America.

29:23: I TOTALLY get Vivica on the "softer side of the Black woman" trend! My ANTENNA went up when I first heard it: but I also would hate for black women to go SO ALL-IN on this TREND, that they start to BACKSLIDE on the whole WORK HARD. STAY STRONG. RISE ABOVE IT ALL mindset...that has KEPT THEM ALIVE, lest they forget that.

Not wanting to celebrate Black History month and not identifying as African American does not mean that Morgan Freeman has forgotten he is Black or that he believes he is high and mighty. It means he is not defined by his African ancestry or his birth country. These labels (for others) are used to help them identify who he is to them. When others describe me, they use the terms and labels (e.g., Black woman, female, mother, daughter, Believer, Boomer, Single Senior, etc.) I only identify as that because I live in a society that mandates I label a gender and a race, ethnicity, etc. Before any of these things I am human, a person and the fact that I am commands that I have certain universal human rights. More often than not, when we (most people ) go beyond 'being human,' as an identifier, the label is used to denigrate, segregate, separate, deny, and/or dismiss. I believe Mr. Freeman is saying lets [first] see one another as human and let that be the primary identifier that holds us all to a higher standard and on common ground. This school of thought will allow us to celebrate everyone, all the time, not just on a single day or during a specific week or month. Just my thoughts after listening to him discuss this subject numerous times over the years; including this interview.

Yes!!! Preach ladies (during the Queendom)...the Bible says you should be equally yoked, that goes for both men and women! Men are so quick to call a woman a gold digger and so many other derogatory terms if they aren't coming correct financially! If I am taking care of my household with no help, and you coming into my life talking about you need me to pick you up from Greyhound for a date- a first date at that- you are out of your mind! Call me what you want, but what I'm not is a fool!🙄😒🤣

I’m simply an American of color!! That is what it is never been to Africa, don’t know anyone who has. I’m not African, not black, not any of that.

I believe Morgan Freeman said he preferred to be called Black!! I agree with him on both counts. Black History should be more than one month and I prefer to be categorized as a Black American instead of African American. Like he said, most of us Black Americans have family that has been in this country since slavery and beyond and we are not pure African. We are of mixed breeds and I believe the term, African American, should be used for people who are American citizens with pure African heritage, like maybe their parents are from an African country or they are naturalized American citizens from an African country. The terms Black and African American should both be options on any application or personal information form. This is my POV because we don't call white people European Americans and we build this country so I'm good with being a BLACK American. I'm black and I'm proud!! P.S. I loved Morgan Freeman on Electric Company! ❤❤
