I was on a walk today, and stopped at a point to follow a trail where a rabbit was, and then felt compelled to fall to my knees telling a story to my friend about a recent scientific discovery. I didn't want to go on my knees, I resisted, but I was compelled. And I told him the discovery. Then I got home and heard the lyrics to Joy. I'm a little speechless right now... "I jumped up like a rabbit and fell down to my knees I jumped up like a rabbit and fell down to my knees Call out all around me, said, "Have mercy on me, please"

Another masterpiece, sharing the intimate journey of heartbreak, despair. In all its darkness...loss of bearings...the heart is broken wide open to experience it all. To grow. To transition. To seek beauty. To realize that yes, it is the most utmost challenging, painful experiences that break us wide open, which brings wisdom, enlightment, knowing. We learn. We learn that beauty is everywhere and we surrender to what is. To be open to whatever comes. Knowing there is no fear. There is no pain. Nick, I am ever so grateful for sharing your intimate, personal journey, your shamonic wisdom with us all. You are the messenger. Your music, artistry, your poetry calls in, invites the spirits. It's 40 minutes til launch and I gotta say I really enjoyed this year-long buildup. I remember really looking forward to Joshua Tree when it was coming out. We already knew it was going to be epic even before it got here. Also Peter Gabriel's SO. And then Jane's Addiction's studio album was like the 2nd coming (for LA people who knew who they were). All three of those records were worth the wait and totally delivered on their promise. And I'm feeling it again! The anticipation is a lot of fun. Nick's been part of the family since the 80s so yeah this is a big deal! And how the world is right now, the state of our so-called culture, and all the looming doom... Yeah, there's a lot riding on this one!

This will be a long one, but I need to say it: in between the debut record and "Murder Ballads" there were in fact changes of sounds, but one could absolutely recognize a Bad Seeds' signature. "The Boatman's Call" was a well received bold move, but it weren't The Seeds really, but they did "come back" with "No More Shall We Part", with Ellis, in fact, musically "comprimising" with the forementioned signature sound. "Nocturama" and "Abattoir" were a logical evolution with piano ballads, Casey's and Sclavunos' groove, neither Harvey nor Ellis were left behind, and it culminated with "Lazarus" which opened the doors to Grinderman, so it was all an evolution; somewhat bold moves that were being built upon on the following records. In the meantime, Harvey left and, to me, the Bad Seeds' sound has somewhere been lost. From "Push the Sky Away" to this record, apart for "Skeleton Tree", which really was a compelling piece but still not really a Bad Seeds' record, I just cannot count the number of memorable pieces which would succeed the number of ones on "The Good Son" , "Henry's Dream", "No More Shall We Part", "Abattoir" or "Lazarus". And when a piece of music IS memorable, one can listen to it again and again and the lyrical proficiency of Nick's (which is a constant) does come into the light. Here, not much so, because there's no hook to make me listen repeatedly. This record sounds better than the last three, and much better than most of the crap on the radio today, but I was waiting for the Seeds to finally explode. Instead, we get Ellis' layers of sound which now sound like a kid who discovered a synthesizer and records 14 tracks on a tune because the sounds excite him. The Seeds started with atmospheric sound back in the 80s, but here we get a messy arrangement in too many places, layers of this and that, riffs that don't go anywhere and an insufferable Ellis' backing vocal that noone really needs. Mind you, I don't think this record is bad and Ellis' contributions during the years amount to a lot, however I think they simply lost the plot. The mix and the production, with the quantity of instruments, is another missed opportunity, because no instrument "breathes" - they need Launey back, too. I had high hopes for this record. It's been 10 years without the Seeds I came to fall in love with, and in a bittersweet moment, it's time to move on. On an unrelated note, Geordie Greep is the future of rock and Epstein didn't kill himself.
@axelnilsson2031

this is an interesting contrarian take I thought much the same of the latest radiohead album, it wasn't as overdone, but when you compare it to in rainbows its like what the hell happened? you are using way too much reverb and there's way too much going on on several of the tracks, the worst culprit was the new version of true love waits, who the hell ok'd that? is thom yorke surrounded by yes men? some of the smile stuff makes me think so, whenever something sounds brilliant its usually when johnny greenwood is there playing hiss less is more electric guitar and you can hear him clearly I think I agree about it. "Skeleton Tree" has several memorable tracks. And the production is good. But its an extremely bleak record -for understandable reasons- thats not always something you are in the mood for. Ghosteen showed potential in "Waiting for you" and "Bright Horses" but was generally hampered by the problems you describe. On this record it is worse than ever. Is Kanye the influence for this unbounded maximalism? Nick says he used to go around thinking he was the hotest shit but he's over that now. If that's the case then someone elses narcissism is all over this record. That would be Ellis. Where is the person saying the songs need hooks and they need to be memorable? Or "everything just blends into everything, and there's too much going on"? Or "this might sound amazing on the 10th listen but who is going to listen this 10 times let alone twice?" I don't think this album has a single song that sticks out. The lyrical themes seem too much alike each other as well. Spiritual elation while facing up to the beast that is the world/god is the stuff of soon to be heroes about to do the deed that will make them such. It's something that's reserved for a moment. You can't have it be the theme of an entire album and have the production reflect that as well. You have to be mad to do that, and Nick Cave is not mad. This type of maximalism you can reserve for like 1 track. I think if they played this stuff stripped down they would realize they need to go back to the drawing board. "Wild god" Could be made into something interesting I guess. But compare it to Jubilee Street which it mentions and its garbage. The first verse sort of has something going on but when it gets to the chorus it loses whatever it had. Then the outro is horrendous. I don't listen to Kanye much, is he the reason for this? The inspiration? I think a lot of artists went astray trying to replicate Kanye or use some of his technique.
