2022 wasn't a good year for flashlights if you're not a flashlight guy. You're not, and that's OK - nobody's perfect. While there wasn't much in the way of wild form factors, here are some things that were exciting to us flashlight guys (well, most of us are guys anyway): The Nichia 519A LED - color rendering, efficiency at higher output AND tint that isn't green all in one package. Acebeam seems to have adopted this as its default LED for EDC lights (though a couple got the 219F), and several of those are tubes in colors other than black. AA/14500 lights that work well with both batteries - there have long been lights meant for 1xAA that could kindasorta use a Li-ion 14500. They were brighter on the Li-ion, but otherwise worked pretty badly. Several manufacturers launched lights that work great with both this year. The Skilhunt M150 v3 (with Nichia 519A) has been a community favorite - it even comes in not-black (grey is only half black!). The Skilhunt EC300 gets flashlight/powerbank combination device right where those have usually been bad at one or both of those functions. It uses standard-compliant USB-C and can output about 3A as a powerbank, running on a standard removable 21700 battery. The flashlight part is floody, optionally high-CRI, and has RGB secondaries.

2022 was a weird year for me, instead of locking folders, fixed blades with some slipjoints sprinkled in, my collecting went full speed into the slipjoint market, more specifically vintage slips from ebay. I only bought 4 locking knives this year, a vintage remington lockback thats more traditional than anything, a Spyderco Techno 2 in January which I just love, a Knifecenter Demko AD 20.5 in CF and 3V which I also love and a Big Banter which I didnt like and sadly sold. Over the past 6 months I've actually sold most of my collection to fund slipjoints and other hobbies. This year really felt stale. Spyderco which is my favorite company and they've been very lack luster. Oh look the 200th sprint of the PM2, oh boy lol. Benchmade and Zt really haven't been impressing me but honestly I want to get back into the locking and fixed blade knife game in 2023 and after hearing Ontario is releasing the Rat 1 in S35Vn steel and what appeared to be G10, I'm very excited. Also I'm hoping Esee releases the CR 3.0 in 2023, it was a small edc fixed blade in S35VN that was suppose to be released in 2020 but with the restriction BS, it got delayed and we're going on 3 years and still no knife, although nothing was said, I'm hopeful. I just hope 2023 is a better year for gear in general and I can get back into the game.

I returned my AD 20.5. I don't get the hype. The shark lock jimping is sharp as shit, and literally hurts to use. And the lack of a detent, instead using a spring, blows dogs. The only thing that's decent was the 3v blade. I wonder how the AD20 compares in those critiques.

Nick please guy, would you for the knife enthusiast’s benefit, not describe the knife market for the year “wildly boring”. In your video review yesterday on the Sencut Sacshe you used the “incredibly boring” description. You’re coming off a bit jaded. And more than a bit demoralizing to a collector like me. I’ve tried as hard as one in my position , as a collector who spends upwards of 10 grand a year on knives, to get a Winter Blade Factor like the one you have sitting on your review table now. And failed. Don’t take your privileged position for granted, please. Oh, and try to go light on the word boring. It comes across poorly. Thanks

Maybe knife design get a bit dull but, it will be surprise for some, people actually use knifes... So even if some of us spend more than 200 bucks for knife we still want them to be useful... BUT.... Overall look don't need to be super weird to be cool. Those custom scales are nice and should be push to some new knife idea where we buy skeleton platform and add different parts for it. I just love modularity idea for knifes. Just imagine possibilities if they would just release base knife and then just different blades for easy change and scales for it and you just make your own knife.

Nick, one of my favorite all-time Spydercos -- discontinued years ago -- is the "Military" with fluted titanium scales. Very similar in appearance to your knife, above, this knife showed off Spyderco's budding CNC skills. This Military is astounding in that the machine work features just the hint of fluting at the pivot end, but gets very deep at the lanyard end of the knife, and the sunburst pattern is along the longest axis of the knife, which is super-difficult to achieve: The knife had to be machined in 2 axis at once, since it's contoured, which is something that might've stumped the Grimsmo brothers.

The Knafs Lander might deserve a closer look. You, and I mean YOU, specifically, Nick Shabazz, would like it more than would be assumed at first glance. It is by far Ben Petersen's most vanilla design to date, a designer you have commented on the vanillaness of his designs in every review thus far, but it has a few tricks up its sleeves. The first trick, and the most significantly deviant from the milieu of budget knives, from the end user's standpoint, is the fast swap scales which in many ways feels like the design choices of far more expensive knives brought down to the echelons of the budget world. The second trick, again, focusing on the end user, is its execution. If you liked the Baby Banter, you would love the Lander. This is a profoundly personal confession for me, as the Baby Banter is, for non-knife reasons, my favorite knife. But the Lander is all around better, except for having different ergonomics (not worse, not better, to be honest). It slices better, the action is better, and it fits in the pocket better. But for me, the biggest thing is that it is the first knife that I know of that is Open Source Hardware (even if there are aspects of it that can never be truly open-sourced because making a liner lock is by nature a case-by-case manufacturing process). I can personally vouch that Ben is taking the open-source nature very seriously and wants the knife to stand as a device entirely owned by the end user, even if the end-user never fully realizes the amount of work that went into making sure that can happen. The Lander takes the "better than it has any right to be" assessment you gave of the Baby Banter and steps it up
