The ibis is part of a group of long-legged wading birds. They typically inhabit wetlands and floodplains. This Australian White Ibis is native to Australia and is one of the three ibis species in Australia together with the Straw-necked ibis and the Glossy Ibis.
Ibis has been sacred to indigenous communities for thousands of years which indicates wetlands health.
Although these birds have also been nicknamed “bin chicken” and regarded as a problem species in Victoria due to scavenging activities and scattering rubbish from tips and bins. And sometimes their tendency to snatch food from picnickers.
