Agree, I have never wanted IM to become a jazz band. Clive was like locomotive =straight, striking and unstopable. He was so metal, not bluesy and jazzy like Nicko, who adds milions of ghost notes but on the other hand lacks a lot of important notes in fills, mostly last few notes of fills and put a couple of kick drum notes instead.

This is a master class in technique and groove. Clive’s version is great but nothing compared to this. Clive had a very basic straight forward style, the way Nicko places all the nuances in the groove was way beyond anything Clive ever did…in saying this is not to insult Clive’s playing either.

Nico overplays the WHOLE song. I MUCH prefer how Clive did it. I have mad respect for Nico’s work and what he’s done for the band, but there’re many cases where Clive’s approach fit better. I feel he tried to serve the song and not do as much as he can all the time.
@biorythmicshifter
9 ай бұрын
@@alexandernilssonmusic I would agree that Clive’s approach suited the more raw energy of the earlier albums but I think for a composition like this a more considered approach seems appropriate. I don’t find it overly busy. I like how he really lays distinct grooves for each part of the song that ultimately flow beautifully. That is one of the things I love about Nicko is he doesn’t overplay anything, he is always in a pocket. Again, I love Clive too but Nicko has a sophistication that Clive never had. We are splitting hairs here which is only indicative of how much we love this band…the greatest band on earth!

I wonder how is his ride technique called. He does not play the ride body itself the whole time, some hits are more pronounced, but he does not hit only the bell either. It is something in between and that is the sound I like the most. But I can't achieve it neither on my e-drums nor on my midi drums with a drum plugin.

One thing you have to factor in with his ride cymbal.. because it’s so close to his toms he has it literally drilled into the stand so it doesn’t move and inch when he’s playing it, otherwise it would be clapping against the rims of his toms and sound terrible. Because of this it chokes a lot of the sound so even when he’s hitting the main body of the cymbal it has a slight bell like sound to it. It’s an explosive ride! I’ve owned one since I was 12 and for rock/metal I’ll never use a different cymbal, it’s the ultimate ride imho. The body is so explosive and the bell cuts like a warm knife through butter
