Funnily enough, I did know John before he wore rashguards. This was back in his Auckland Uni days from the varsity gym where he was one of the regulars and he was also bouncing back then too. I only realised ‘Big John’ as me and mates called him and John Danaher were one and the same a few years back as he looked quite different back then, was a really nice guy and a lot more approachable than how he is portrayed through social media now.

During his Auckland Uni days John was doing a lot of weights with a very close friend of his who did Wing Chun and tae kwon do. I knew his friend very well and through his friend knew John. His friend (i'll call him "A") was incredibly athletic, but got into the weights with John and they became H U G E (growing from around 70 odd kg to around 110-120kg). His close friend "A" (around the same height) was as big but possibly stronger ie "A"'s biceps were probably twice the size of a solid persons legs and was winning bench pressing competitions everywhere. They were like twin brothers. Anyone who knew those two were aware of their extreme focus and dedication. They were always guzzling down bottles of milk for the protein almost to the point of being sick. "A" at the time was a brilliant guy studying computers. I remember that "A" was coding a game based on the movie Aliens. This was in the 80's before anyone had a video or DVD player. So to get the details of the movie, "A" went to see the movie over 30-50 times. As you can see from John's success, John has a similar like focus. While John went to the States to study philosophy and do bouncing, "A" went to Hong Kong, to work in coding, and to do bouncing work on the side (I remember "A" having to deal with triads in bars and the damage people can do with the big cell phones in those days!). Sadly "A" got in with the wrong crowd. "A" was smart, so figured out with a chemist a way to make and sell party pills, which were chemically just on the side of being 'legal' at the time, and made millions of dollars and was living in Thailand. Unfortunately the police arrested "A"'s 'business-partners' in NZ, and in quite a famous case in NZ, they were all found guilty of drug dealing (it became a technical case with the legality of the chemical make up of the pills. "A" was sentenced in absentia. Unfortunately, "A" ended up dying in a jail in Bangkok from an infection while awaiting deportation back to NZ. It is a really sad story. "A" was not only brilliant and incredibly athletic (as brilliant as John - if that was possible, but probably more athletic) and a beautiful guy with a soft heart. When he died a lot of people like myself were heartbroken. I often imagine if "A" had gone with John to New York, how brilliant "A" also might have been in the sport John chose ("A" was an amazing martial artist). I know what I have written is more to do with "A" than John, but I think "A" was a big part of John's early life before John went to the states and "A' was big into the martial arts. It was almost like they were living parallel lives but diverged to two different extremes. I remember chatting with John and "A" on campus (sometimes about philosophy); John was a friendly, easy going guy - agree with the other poster that John was somewhat different from the image people might now have of him (although like I said John and "A" had an almost inhuman laser like focus, dedication and intelligence and both would have what you would call Type A personalities - minus the nastiness). In around 1993 I remember one day chatting with John and he said he was soon going to New York to Colombia U to do a Phd in philosophy and that's the last I heard of John. When "A" died, I wondered about John and then around the same time (it was a couple of years ago) when I was on the internet I read about a guy called John who was famous in bjj (I don't follow the sport), was from NZ and studied at Colombia U. It was then I put 2 and 2 together and recognised it was him!
