from the composer:
"Before the pandemic, I had the idea to write a piece based on the famous “Trout Quintet” by Schubert. “Trout Quintet” has such charming qualities and musical gestures, and I’ve always had difficulty describing it as something other than whimsical. So, oddly enough, when I saw Tony Curtis’ painting titled “Cat Fishing”, my brain connected Schubert and Curtis upon first glance. The painting had, needless to say, my definition of whimsicality, but the way in which it delivered it
was new- blurring perspectives, melting the borders of what we know as what we know, setting things in a new dimension. Tony Curtis’ approach outlines every object in the painting, yet leaves you unable to decipher the background and foreground logically. “The Fish Piece”, written for the Citadel Art Museum, was composed under a similar idea. I’ve gathered some of the iconic musical moments from the “Trout Quintet” and assembled a piece that blurs the original form, that puts it in a new dimension. As someone who has a deep love for the whimsical, and as someone who
knows how rare whimsicality is, my only hope is that “The Fish Piece” does it well."
