"Daughter that gets taken to school in a fucking sedan chair" I always thought that was the best part of this rant, implying she's so posh she's transported around by four people carrying this chair like some kind of queen in ancient Persia.
The Murphy's Actually 1) I read a novel about five years ago with a scene describing a courtier being transported in a sedan; 2) even with my mediocre intelligence, it's not too difficult to imagine what he's talking about, based on the context.

I love the bit where she reveals she's claustrophobic. It pretty much sums up her character. When stuck in a situation that starts closing in around her, and then she can't see no way out of it, she grows fearful and paranoid. She is both literally and figuratively claustrophobic.

The best lines are right after this when she heads down the stairs and runs into Malcolm (almost literally). By memory, he asks, "So, have you made up your mind--your husband or your daughter?" and she replies, "I already made up my mind when you told me." I've always thought it was good that Malcolm actually backs off at that point as if he recognizes that it was a shitty choice for her and placates her by telling her that, after a few years, she likely would be able to move her daughter back to the private school. This is, of course, before Nicola proves to him what a completely hopeless omnishambles she really was.

What I love about the thick of it is that Malcolm is the engineer of his own eventual downfall. He recommends Nicola as minister despite doing no background checks on her. Without this she would never had a large public profile which lead to her becoming leader. As leader Malcolm makes her call for an enquiry into selling off keyworker housing, which she supported while minister of DoSAC to screw her over. This enquiry though found the picture of Malcolm with Tickel's medical records number and led to his arrest and resignation. All came from that single decision.
