If she had decided to politicise the pandemic - an accusation she denies - Nicola Sturgeon accepted it would have been a “betrayal”.
The former first minister has been accused in the inquiry of using the pandemic to push for Scottish independence, with lead counsel Jamie Dawson KC asking if such a move would be a “considerable betrayal of the Scottish people”.
“If I had at any point decided to politicise a global pandemic that was robbing people of their lives and livelihoods, and educational opportunities, and had decided in the face of that to prioritise campaigning for independence, then, yes, it absolutely would have been as you described,” Ms Sturgeon said.
“Which is precisely why I didn’t do it - I wouldn’t have done it.”
Nicola Sturgeon said she “knows for a fact” it is possible for her to make decisions without seeing them through the prism of independence.
She said she had not thought “less” about politics and independence than she did during the Covid-19 pandemic.
She said she wanted to assure the inquiry that none of the decisions she took were “influenced in any way” by political considerations or by trying to gain advantage in the goal of independence.
She said: “I was motivated solely by trying to do the best we could to keep people as safe as possible.”
