Ghiaurov posessed not only an extraordinary voice but was a great actor too, and this is a very essential requirement in the opera. And last but not the least, he was a very handsome man with a memorable aristocratic appearance. It is 90 years since his birth this week on September 13th, 2019 and this is a good reason to remember him, although neither the grateful Bulgaria nor the world have ever forgotten him. Chapeau, Maestro!

Superb im every way, even at 57. NO ONE, not even Lev Sbiriakov, ever sang this like Ghiaurov. I heard him in this at the Metropolitan, about 1986 or 87. A great singer.

Ghiaurov's Gremin is simply unbeatable, IMO. I've never heard anyone do it better. It's the whole package--vocally sublime, emotionally passionate and expressive, elegant legato... perfect!

Fantastic!! What a singer! His voice in the theater was beautiful and big. Pride for Russia? Well, he is singing in Russian and Tchaikovsky was also Russian. But Ghiaurov was Bulgarian. Anyway, that part of the world has given us fantastic low voices.

@@Scarpia2030 He studied first in the Bulgarian State Conservatory with Professor Hristo Brumbarov and was sent later to the USSR. There was practice in those times to send promissing students to reputable schools and universities abroad, mainly within the socialist camp.

Ghiaurov had a vocal crisis in the late seventies. When I heard him in 1983 it was not the same voice I first heard in 1965. Check the early recordings. Still he was arguably the best bass in the world even after he had had to revise his technique.

What happened to him?
@ransomcoates546
2 жыл бұрын
@@jujujijijaja This is a very good question. I heard him a lot, beginning in 1965, since he appeared in Chicago almost every year. I will never forget the effect he made with that first ‘Ave’ in ‘Mefistofele’ that year. The resonance was so profound the sound seemed to come from the walls. For about a decade he consistently was singing at that level. I heard him in top form last around ‘75 as Boris. Then I moved around and didn’t hear him again until a concert with his then wife Freni in Rome in ‘81. The voice was a shell of what I remembered so clearly (as, frankly, it is in this clip). So far as I can tell he did nothing vocally wrong to produce such a pronounced decline. I have come to think that some great voices simply come with an expiration date. Corelli is another example. When his decline set in he simply retired. Ghiaurov continued to sing way past his prime, with the result that people who heard him late cannot imagine what he was like in the 60’s and early 70’s. The clip that follows this one on my list gives you an idea.

Very nice, though my favourite aria is the letter scene. Does anyone know a good Tanya for that aria? I have on a CD a version by Nuccia Focile, but I personally don't like it: it's not what I want to hear from a Tatyana. Any good ideas?

@spqrmor That's why I said "IMO;" (In My Opinion). Of course it's just my opinion that he's unbeatable. I've heard Shtokolov, he's definitely a great basso, but for me he does not have the velvety warmth that Ghiaurov does, nor the inimitable stage presence. Again, just my opinion! :)
