Thanks for your video! When I started, I had many people concerned I would be addicted to nicotine. After a few years of smoking, I can say that it has not. I find a sugary drink does the best for me to counteract the effects of nicotine. Nicotine has gotten a bad wrap over the years due to "Big Tobacco's" additives. But in doing my research on it, I found that it has many of the same properties as caffeine and has helped lesson symptoms of Alzheimers.

Everyone's body and brain chemistry is different, and therefore everyone will react differently to drugs. Let's not kid ourselves, nicotine is drug. Additive-free tobacco is addictive, however the addictive potential is mild. For me, it's about half as addictive as coffee, but more addictive than alcohol. If I'm smoking just one bowl of pipe tobacco a day every day for a while, and then I stop for whatever reason, I get a headache and feel a bit tense for about half a day, and I keep thinking about smoking until this passes. But it passes easily enough. Further, I have a friend who smokes additive-free rolling tobacco, and he's completely hooked. My father's godfather was completely hooked on cigars. But you are right about additive-laced cigarettes. I tried smoking pre-made cigarettes and was scared off by how addictive they are. I used painkillers heavily for years after I hurt my back, and quitting was the hardest thing I have ever done. Yet, just from getting my feet wet, I am convinced that pre-made cigarettes are more addictive than opiates.
@dee5298

Petox20x I agree with your assessment on the addictive potential of cigarettes. I have been addicted since I was 13 and it didn't take long. I quit for five years and started back a year or so ago as if I had never stopped. I'm sticking to pipe now and having withdrawals. Also, lexipro is up there but without the psychological addiction, both worse than opiates, Xanax, and way worse than alcohol after about a year of steadily going to bed blasted.

The thing with rolling tobacco is that, when you inhale the smoke, the nicotine hits yout brain much faster and much harder than when you just let it in your mouth, and that makes it much more addictive too
@robsexton8816

I smoked cigarettes for about 10 years, finally quit then picked up chewing tobacco when I got into trade work. That's a 5 year habit now, so I'm no stranger to nicotine or addiction to it, but I can say pretty confidently it'd be hard to get hooked on pipes or cigars. I've quit chewing for 3 or 6 months at a time and, once the cravings are gone, I still have the tolerance (provided I smoke enough/strong enough tobacco) but its not a "lateral" move. I could smoke a bowl of Irish Flake and still have a weak craving for a dip right after, not because I "need" more nicotine, but because its a product engineered to form a habit. On the flipside I have relied on the pipe to help me quit chewing before. It doesn't 100% scratch the itch but the nicotine gets delivered and, if you can stick it out a few days the worst is over YMMV. Thanks Chris for your great videos, you are the ONLY KZitem pipesmoker I subscribe to- you are kind, thoughtful and are dedicated to the hobby and to seeing it passed on. Long live the Chop indeed!

Another great video, thanks! I've found that the blends that affect me the most are things like 1792 Flake (and some of the other Samuel Gawith blends), and Peterson's Irish Flake, and I've found that making sure they are dry (by letting them dry much longer that seems necessary) helps these a lot. My theory is that when there is any moisture in them I puff harder and faster to try to keep them lit - and these high nic blend need to be sipped!!! I think this was the case with the Gawith and Hoggarth Sweet Maple Twist that we smoked for Blend Club a few months back. I really liked that blend (I think I gave it the highest rating of the group) but it was because I would slice off a couple coins, rub them out, and let them sit an dry for several hours before loading my pipe. I found that blend to be quite enjoyable that way and I didn't get the nic hit others mentioned. So, if you have something that is a little higher in moisture content, and is known to be high in nicotine, give that a try as well.

As you said, high nicotine blends should be smoked only after a full meal. Another point to observe is bowl size. I love Burley/Kentucky/Perique blends, but wouldn't want to smoke something like MacBaren's HH Bold Kentucky in a pipe that lasts me more than an hour. Smaller pipes providing a, say, 40 min. smoke are the way to go with such blends. For many it may also be wise to refrain from drinking spirits parallel to smoking a heavy tobacco; instead one should keep oneself hydrated by choosing a non-alcoholic beverage or at least one that's low in alcohol, like beer or a light wine. Observing these points, I've never experienced any nicotine sickness so far.

More important than the lack of additives, cigar and pipe tobacco nicotine takes much longer to get into the blood stream than that of cigarettes, because the smoke is not inhaled. The speed of the nicotine "hit" from cigarettes greatly increases the propensity for habit-formation. Also, pipes and cigars simply aren't nearly as quick and easy to smoke as cigarettes, so it's much harder to smoke them multiple times per day, every day.

On the subject of addiction. I smoke one or two hand rolled cigarettes every now and then (maybe once or twice a week). I usually stick to "organic" tobacco blends that contain no additives. But once I couldn't find any, so I bought a Vanilla flavored pack (Look Out, I think was the brand), and they were good. But they became increasingly addictive really fast. So yeah, everything's good to enjoy so long as it is done in moderation. Also, when I was a teen I once smoked like three cigarettes with my cousin (she was older than me). And after that I felt really really sick. She told me eating a green apple would... And it did! So another "remedy" I guess.

I feel if people start to get nicotine sick and have to keep setting the pipe down they should just power through it a few times and build the tolerance up to it. You are 100 percent correct and very educational on this for people but I personally just powered through and it stopped to where you can smoke the strongest blends morning or night.

Thank you for the advice. I'm a new pipe smoker but I've occasionally smoked cigars for years and upon my first light I experienced the nicotine "buzz". I've felt it before with cigars but nothing to the extent of my first light using a pipe. I smoked Peterson's Old Dublin and I'd say I was 1/3 of the way through the bowl and it hit me. I knew to put the pipe down before I got sick, but I have to say it was a much more intense feeling than with the cigars I've smoked. I had just had dinner and so I can say that I wasn't expecting it. I later finished the bowl when the feeling passed and I was able to finish the bowl, granted I still had a little of the "buzz" but nothing compared to the initial light.

Cigeretts have ammonia added to increase nicotine potency. That is the main one anyway. Tobacco has ammonia naturally in lower amounts the more it's cured the less ammonia and nicotine. So if you are concerned go for longer cured blends which are typically darker.

Fresh air also helps, because when you're feeling sick and still smelling the smoke, especially indoors, it can make you even sicker. (But maybe that's just me) And if you already feel sick, do yourself a favour and just go to the bathroom. After going to the bathroom you will instantly feel a lot better. It happens to all of us at some point, although I think it is more common to happen with cigars.

I smoke anywhere from zero to five days a week, and it is much easier on my wallet than cigars were (even though I recently expanded my pipe collection to seven), not to mention that many of my friends compliment me on my cologne when they are in fact smelling black Cavendish with an occasional hint of Latakia. Eventually after my third attempt I successfully quit with a little assistance of the patch. That was in 2008 or 09 and haven't had either since, however, I do enjoy a good cigar every once in a while and I've been thinking lately about trying a pipe. I know as far as cigars go they are definitely, in respect to addictiveness, different from cigarettes and dip. There is a good reason why every corner store sells candy right along side the cigarettes. I can smoke myself silly, where I'm stuck in my chair drooling, and not get nauseous as long as I have enough sugar in my system. Nicotine increases your body's metabolism, and therefore it increases your body's requirement for sugar. If you don't have enough sugar in your system to begin with, you'll suffer from hypoglycemia. That is, you'll become horribly ill from low blood sugar levels. Instead of waiting to get sick and then going for the chocolate, eat something really high in sugar a few minutes before you start smoking. Honey is good because it is absorbed more slowly, so if you sit down for an hour-long smoke it will last you. Hot chocolate is great. Coffee or tea with a lot of sugar is OK for this purpose, but keep in mind that the caffeine will further increase your metabolism (but also, most likely increase your enjoyment).

i came to pipe smoking via cigarettes so i was already hooked on nicotine and it was hard to find at first a strong enuf pipe tobacco. but over time i was able to change my habit quite a bit by taking a couple draws off the pipe and and setting it down instead of smoking a whole cigarette. witch has saved alot of cash! now i can smoke as much as i want for about 16$ a month. that's what 2 packs of cigarettes cost! and i was a 2 pack a day guy!

I smoke cigars mostly which have a huge amount of nicotine in them compared to cigarettes and pipe tobacco. Even after 5 years of smoking a strong cigar will completely knock me on my ass. I usually don't get sick from pipe tobacco. I usually use honey or pure white sugar to relieve the sickness and it goes away after 15-30 minutes. Smoke in well ventilated areas. If you are smoking in a lounge or with a lot of people, be prepared because you will take in a lot more nicotine than you are smoking. Nicotine is a chemical that is in the tobacco and the smoke itself. It will get in to your bloodstream just by the smoke on your skin and your body will absorb it. Light weights (like myself) should be careful and be prepared with an emergency soda or sugary item on hand when with lots of other smokers. Nicotine will sometimes cause headaches and increase your heart rate. Your heart rate can be high for a few hours after while your body is still processing the nicotine.

I have a reason for taking in a moderate amount of nicotine daily - Parkinson's Disease. I found through some research that symptoms of this and other related problems like Dystonia and Essential Tremor are remarkably reduced with nicotine, and have found that smoking a pipe once daily provides a lasting reduction of symptoms. I mentioned this to my Neurologist and he said "I can't advise you to take up smoking, but it's true - these diseases result from depletion of Dopamine, and nicotine has been proven with many medical studies to cause your brain to release a lot of it's own Dopamine" - he then asked me if I'd like to try a nicotine patch to which I said "no I enjoy the pipe so much, and it works". So far, I smoke quite aggressively and even inhale a few puffs, but at the same time, mitigate this by using a 9mm filter, taking occasional breaths of fresh air and drinking a large glass of fresh water during the smoke. So for me, getting some "Nick" into my brain is the #1 reason I started smoking at age 61. I've never been addicted to cigarettes, having tried one or 2 in high school like every kid, but that did make me sick at the time, and I wondered "why do people spend so much money to make themselves puke?" But for me, pipe tobacco produces such a wonderful relaxing immediate euphoria - I suppose in my case I'm making my too-low Dopamine level go normal, but normal people would be making it go too high, causing sickness, and then addiction. Make sense?

@@MuttnchopPiper So now 2 years later, I'm still doing this, still once per day, but like all "medication", found it to become less helpful over time. That said, I've tried a variation - placing a finger and thumb over the bowl, drawing in a big mouthful, and inhaling the extremely thick oxygen deprived smoke deeply - talk about a "nic-hit"! I'd do this two or three times per smoke... totally enjotable, but almost knocking me out of my chair. Interesting that even smoking to this extreme still does not give me any craving to smoke, but still wasn't helping my symptoms as much as when I first started. But, last week, I figured "this can't be good for me"... so I've gone back to your "breathe method" strictly not inhaling, and I was surprised that overall, I could still feel that elevation of Dopamine... just not so much at once, but as the session lasts much longer, overall I'm still feeling the magic, and still being helped a little bit. Nicotine still gets absorbed in the mouth.

I was wondering if it is worth giving pipe smoking a chance, to me it seem like a really calming and ritualistic experience. I personally am very much against smoking cigarettes as they are completely unhealthy and disgusting. However based on some of my research, it seems like pipe smoking and cigar smoking is the least harmful in comparison to cigarette smoking. My general stance is anything that destroys my lungs is something to stay away from, however as with pipe smoking and cigar smoking you don’t inhale the smoke which for me still isn’t the most agreeable. I do feel that it is very cool to pipe smoke and it is generally a not such harmful hobby. As I have never smoked and don’t plan on except trying pipe smoking, being 18 years old I would like to ask you whether or not it is worth trying pipe smoking as it really intrigues me, and like the fine art of tasting wine I would like to taste the different tobaccos for the experience and possibly turn it into a hobby. I am not worried about addiction as I have received plenty of second hand smoke , but it has not had any adverse effects. Thank you for reading this long spiel of mine and giving me a recommendation based on your experience.

thebigshot101 - First of all, I know this is totally uncool but make sure you are legally able to smoke wherever you are from, some states and countries it’s 21. That being said, you are right, coming a pipe is safer then smoking cigarettes, but there are still risk, you could develop tongue, throat, esophageal, and even stomach cancer from smoking a pipe, but the risk is very low. My advice if you want to try pipe smoking is to purchase the following things; a corn cob pipe, or a $35 to $50 Briar pipe, a tamper commonly known as a Czech tool, matches, some pipe cleaners, and an Aromatic tobacco, not cherry unless you like cherry flavor. Then come home and watch one of my playlist called just the basics. 👍👍👍

I was still feeling really good after so I decided to have a bit more since I was with friends and they already fired up second bowls (they were smoking Virginias, though). It took about an hour to hit but once it did it began the most miserable 2 hours of my life. Hanging on the edge of the bed weak and with a trash can next door. That stuff is no joke-- it'll put on your nightcap and send you to sleep!

It can enter your body through your skin. People who harvest tobacco can present severe symptoms after working many hours in a field. Secondary smoke can do it as well. I remember getting extremely sick as a kid, riding in car during winter where every adult was smoking a cigarette with the windows closed.

In your opinion, would a filter reduce the amount of nicotine entered in the body, or would it reduce the "risk" of getting addicted? Thank you again very much for your videos Mr. Muttnchop.
@MuttnchopPiper

Rowan - in my opinion yes, a filter might reduce the amount of nicotine. But understand something, nicotine in pipe tobacco is natural nicotine, it’s not like cigarettes where chemicals are added to enhance the potency of the nicotine. Plus you don’t inhale pipe smoke so the chance of getting addicted are extremely low, I have smoked a pipe for 30 years and I have not once gotten the shakes, or craved a bowl of pipe tobacco to the point where I have to stop everything I’m doing to have one. 👍👍👍
