Nigella is spot on when she says that cooking is about puttiing things in a pan and taking them out of the pan. I left the culinary world because so much of it was about pretending it all was so much more than flour, sugar, and butter. Acknowleging that it IS just flour, sugar, and butter is the first step to enjoying cooking and having others enjoy it with you.

sarah lilith Bravery comes in many forms. For a woman, in my experience, the thing they treasure more than anything else, is the ability to control their privacy. She totally capitulates this for the good of her vision. She breaks all the rules of a "healthy diet", & has admitted that she is by no means a chef, but merely an intruder in this field, but she still does it anyway. There aren't any other people doing what she is.. for a good reason.

@chrismail No, if she was there would be no ambiguity. Nigella remains engaged in the conversation and from previous comments she has made likes to be challenged. She's an Oxford graduate, super intelligent, and would have made mincemeat of him (pardon the pun) had she not wanted to be there, also note 42-43mns as the interview ends. I take her at her word: she treated him like a younger sibling, talking across him at times and always engaged.

Nigella´s sincere, self-deprecating perspective is such a welcome departure from so many megalomaniacs who are in the public eye. I suppose I´m used to seeing interviews with actors and artists, who I admit sometimes need to be egocentric to succeed in the biz; either way, I am fully enamored with Nigella´s down-to-earth conversational style.

why is the guy attacking her basic approach towards understanding her world? isn't it the whole point hearing how this one woman has lived and built a life/career through food. he is aggressively trying to find holes in the things she say. at several points, even her body language changes. arms up to her hair, or hands to her throat. 10:39

Pertinent here is hardly any "celebrity" chefs cook at all, for anyone. They set up a chain of restaurants then vanish waiting for the cash to roll in, maybe making a single appearance at opening. Hong Kong is littered with this crap franchise celebrity chef offering as are most major cities. To me this not cooking or anything to be celebrated. Expensive mostly frozen paint by numbers meals which in fact taste just like that. Time chefs were back in the kitchen sleeves rolled up where they belong in my opinion because these are the only places to eat out. Luckily these are also the majority of restaurants outside the mainstream which are still a joy of discovery but not in places like the US, UK. Cookie cutter meals are boring for everyone including the chef, most like to play with menus ingredients and let themselves and customers be inspired. The full negative impact of Michelin star ratings is a chef utterly neurotic about exactly the right way to do a dish, even the simplest thing. This kills innovation and passion. When a chef believes the ace up his sleeve is still a beef wellington twenty, thirty years down the line you know there's a problem.

He is a good interviewer - he did a wonderful one with Leonard Cohen (on YT) - and knows how to draw people out and put them at ease, though he is always a bit stiff at first. As for what NL said about having run away to the circus, that is exactly what I have always felt about her; she has a good intellect which is going to waste with all this cookery stuff.

+Anastasia Beaverhausen Probably your view of a good interviwer is not the same as his. I'm sure the interviwer didn't want to make her at easy. He wanted to know something and he got it from her. He also wanted to provoque her to show intelectually her value and she did so. At then end he feels satisfected, as you see, because even tho he may not agree on what they talked about, she used intelectual capacity to interpretate her actions through her story. If you think like that, he was a great interviewer. However if you think you shouldn't put people or celebrities on some kind of stern questioning, you are right, he was not a "good person" or "good interviewer". But I must say that I admire her on been respectful on his questioning. She acted like an older sibiling, trying to explain to a younger person but with respect as in the same level.
