Niger Tribunal's SHOCKING Move Towards Mohammad Bazoum’s Son.
Previously, Mr. Bazoum, along with his wife and son, had been confined to the presidential house since the coup on July 26th. On October 19th, they attempted to escape with the help of family members, cooks, and security personnel via helicopter, but their attempt was halted. The Niger Junta revealed that they had foiled an escape plot by the ousted president to drive to the outskirts of the capital and catch a helicopter to neighboring Nigeria. Bazoum's family claimed that they had been deprived of basic necessities like running water, electricity, and fresh goods, which drew condemnation from former Western allies.
On the same day, the initial group of French soldiers, ordered to leave Niger by its military rulers, arrived in the capital of Chad without significant issues. This led to speculation that France might have been involved in Bazoum's escape plan. Despite support from France and other countries and organizations for Bazoum's release, the military regime remained inflexible. Family members mentioned that they had not heard from him since the day before the escape plan.
It was expected that Bazoum could face serious charges and severe punishment for his attempted escape. Calls for his release came from both local and international sources. The former president's relatives spoke out about the abusive treatment they endured under the new military regime. The family's lawyer expressed concern about the military authorities' focus on President Bazoum's family.
The West African bloc, ECOWAS, called on the coup leaders to reinstate Mr. Bazoum as president. ECOWAS had threatened military intervention if diplomatic efforts failed and had imposed substantial economic sanctions. However, the Niger military junta remained determined to prosecute Bazoum and was not intimidated by these measures.
Later, it was reported that Bazoum had appealed to the West Africa bloc's court to secure his release. His lawyer asked the court to order Niger's military rulers to end his arbitrary arrest and transfer power back to him. ECOWAS warned that it could militarily intervene in Niger if diplomatic efforts to reinstate Bazoum failed. If the court rules in favor of Bazoum, Niger would be legally obligated to execute the decision.
