Asaba Massacre
(Nigeria-Biafra War)
On 8 October 1967, four months into the Nigeria-Biafra War, Federal troops carried out what has been described as Asaba Massacre. It started when the people of Asaba came out in the town-square, singing “One Nigeria” songs in appeasement of the Nigerian Army that had captured the town. The Army danced to their songs by lining up the men and boys in the crowd, mowing them down with machine guns. About 700 of them were said to have been killed in the square and around the town that day.
Lt Col Emmanuel Ajayi (Retd) was one of the soldiers in Asaba when the 'massacre' occurred. In this interview, he gives his side of the story.
