Damn, Count Basie makes everyone sound like they are gods from outer space! Forrest really rocks here, showing the fine line between early 50's swing, R&B, and rock. I consider this to be where rock and roll starts, leading from Louis Jordan and then on to the Memphis sound.

I met Jimmy Forrest when I heard the Basie's Big Band at the old Prom Ballroom in Saint Paul Minnesota, now torn down. It was 16 and it was 1976. My father had taken us to see the Basis Band at Orchestra Hall in Minneapolis maybe a year earlier. Forrest was very friendly.

Sultry, big band blues supreme. And nobody channeled gritty sax better than Jimmy Forrest. He got some of the inspiration from his days with Duke Ellington, where part of "Night Train" originated kzitem.info/news/bejne/qXx6zZ-sjKuTZHY I wonder if there are any video clips of Jimmy's solo on Ellington's "Deep South Suite". Regardless, this clip is a treasure. Thanks for posting it.

The killer version of this is done by Louis Prima and Sam Butera. Way more sexy and powerful than this version. Look it up and judge for yourself.
