Again, it's like the best class we can have! First time ever I see someone talking on nightclub photography with so deep knowledge. I can identify myself in what you say. I started with a very poor camera faced so many problems but I've learned a lot on photography experimenting in the worst conditions we can find to shoot. In the end it was the best way to learn photography. Now I'm buying better equipment and feel I am starting again but in another level challenging myself to do a real pro and high quality work. And your advices and tips are really helping me, confirming things I've learned by myself but was not sure about and teaching some great new stuff. THANK YOU!

you do not need a rear-curtain sync in order to shoot with a long exposure. First curtain-sync is better because you can control the moment which you will catch with the flash. And when you shoot with a long exposure and with rear curtain sync, you can not know what moment you will catch, expecially if you exposure is about one second.

@LukeCurtis

Are you shooting in raw? It will look super dark in screen but will edit well of raw. There might be a different in quality as I was using the a7rii which is super high res and the 7c is less I think? So maybe bump up the iso.. on the new Sonys you can easy go to 1000 no issue with quality but ensure it’s in raw to keep the integrity of the files

I have a 10 year old nikon dx camera I just started shooting nightclub and I'm using the kit lens 18-105 which works fine, but the quality is not in the level I want it to be. Do you think if I take a 35 mm equivalent lens instead that would make it better quality? I could get a 24/28 mm screw drive lens on cheap. Or stick to current combo and upgrade to full frame??
@LukeCurtis
4 жыл бұрын
It’s all about how much light you can get into the lens either via the lens or flash or both . Full frame will help but it’s a. Investment some can’t make easily. Fast lenses will always help 1.4/1.8 etc

Do you think it would be viable to use a non AF lens in a club? Kind of a stupid question I know but at the moment my lenses aren’t able to auto focus, I can imagine trying to pull focus as fast as possible 😂
@LukeCurtis

It’s possible of course, but I think it would wear you out quickly and some images might not be as sharp as you need ?

I’ve been doing a lot of club photography. My biggest difficulty is with getting the focus right. With manual, I feel like it’s really easy to screw it especially because I can’t see much in my viewfinder. Also if I want a more lit picture, I like using a 1.4 lens but then it’s really easy to miss the focus and auto focus is not very reliable in those conditions. If I use a 3.5-5.6, then my camera cannot see anything and I might as well forget auto but still cannot see much in the viewfinder if I decide to go manual. But then with that opening, I also need to have a stronger flash that usually kills the surrounding colorés light and is also very aggressive toward the subject. Any advice on how to manage that?
@lorenavidal4651

I also shoot with a canon 70D and can’t afford to upgrade to a full frame right now, and always shoot raw
@LukeCurtis

Thanks for watching, totally understand your dilemma… I think canon do a flash with an infrared targeting that helps with the auto focus . Manual focus in a club is hard unles you have a mirrloess with zebra or peaking. I would try To grab the focus when there is light then take with flash… with less less is more as you want to keep the mood I feel then work the rest in post x

How do you handle autofocus in Night Clubs as there is such low light and your camera is always flighting to find or lock your focus?
@LukeCurtis
Жыл бұрын
Some cameras have an infrared focus lock that helps this also some speedlights can do this too. This is what I used to use to get lock in clubs and also you should get into the practice of shooting a lot as not always you’ll get it in focus so taking more shoots increase the probability of getting usable images

@@LukeCurtis Thank you! Had another question, i did shoot at a night club last night. The major issue I came across was if I used flash with lightsphere, the photos were all hazy as the night clubs tend to have a lot of smoke machines. How do you tackle that?
