Picked one of these up in FDE recently to replace a VCOG and glad I made the switch. The 1x performance is amazing. VCOG at 8x reigns supreme in terms of eye box, but the ATACR reticle is much better and clarity is a bit higher.

@@michaelkennedy996 yeah. The VCOG as listed on Trijicon’s website is the weight of the scope, mount, and battery. The old TA-51 mounts were like 4 ounces by themselves. So very comparable overall.

Really like the OFF settings between brightness levels. Great video, running a Vortex Razor HD 1-10X myself. Interesting conversation about NV, didn't know that, never thought lpvo was good for up close tactical shooting, great for varmints. I am okay with $2,000, it is worth it totally and they are $2,449 currently so I am happy about my investment. I put it on a very light carbine so it's about 10 pounds total now. Vortex is so good, the target is brighter through the scope than just through my eye.

You can never go wrong with a Night Force optic of any kind... I'm not the biggest fan of some of their optics mainly because of their magnification ranges but that aside they bring the same phenomenal glass quality and durability to everything with their name on. Passive aiming through just about anything outside of a red dot of some kind with night vision is kind of a pain in the ass and is a last resort to me for all the reasons you listed... it just gets aggravating and slows me down a lot. I like running a red dot on top of my LPVO instead of on an offset or just use my peq15 or mawl but I like how you actually ran this combo in a class to form your opinion on it. Much respect brother and great video!!

My issue with almost all first focal plane LPVOs is the dependence on illumination at 1x. Unless battery life is measured in years, I don't like having to rely on a battery for it to be usable. This is probably one of the better ones on the market because of the extremely bold T post, but you are still having to guess where the center is at 1x because the finer details at the center are basically invisible at 1x. I think the future might be the dual reticle design that some other manufacturers are starting to come out with, where the main reticle is SFP but the holdovers are FFP, like the March 1-10 shorty dual reticle. It would be interesting to see a dual reticle offering from nightforce.

It also sux at night for adult shooters! That would be people old enough to have astigmatisms ;-P FYI changing the diopter does not cure "astigmatism super nova", but helps immensely! So the red horshoesque reticle goes wonky for us peeps on the A-Spectrum and I am working it out now. A good question for all these VPO and LPVO optics with illuminated reticles... is the etched reticle in the same plane (same glass element ) as the illuminated reticle ? Reason to ask this is if they are NOT then when you set up your diopter as usual... it is NOT set for the illuminated reticle only the etched reticle and changing the diopter setting on most 2nd Focal Plane scopes is a separate dial on back of the objective ocular so you can put tick marks for day or night and change at a moments notice, but on the single focal plane ATACR having to loosen the whole ocular to make multiple rotations probably to change the diopter for etched reticle day or illuminated reticle night is a major ordeal. I just got mine and am working through it, but lowlight and night is frustrating right now.
@RB-xv4si

You clearly have a misunderstanding about the advantage that increased optic tube size provides. Increased size of the tube only allows for more windage and elevation travel. Only an increase in objective lens size, glass quality, or reduction in total number of lenses (think fixed power) can provide more light.

After running the ATACR 1-8x with DMX reticle, how would you compare to the NX8 1-8x? They now offer the NX8 with the same DMX reticle. Is the eye box really as bad as people make it out to be on the NX8 in comparison to the ATACR?
@apocalypse1175

It’s not that bad. I got rid of my ATACR and got an NX8 for my patrol rifle.
@apocalypse1175
2 жыл бұрын
@@thejoatmoo it just didn’t fit what I wanted to do with it. The ATACR is heavy and fairly long. The NX8 is much lighter, the scope and mount is almost the same weight as an Eotech Magnifier combo. The reticle on the NX8 is usable but it’s not as complicated as a the ATACR which works better for me due to how I use the weapon the most. I don’t need a fine tuned tree reticle when it engagement distances will prolly be 100yards and in. IMO the ATACR is better suited for a DMR roll. The NX8 is better suited to shorter barreled rifles and rifles that are going to be used in CQB and may see some longer range engagements.

The eye box really is as bad as they say. I really wanted the NX8 due to size, weight and cost but after looking through one it was a no go for sure. Just got my atacr and really like it! Has better glass than the NX8 also.
@apocalypse1175
2 жыл бұрын
@@bradpowell843 They eye box between the two is exactly the same. The tube on the ATACR is bigger so it makes it feel easier to use on 1x but if your shooting with both eyes open up close they won’t matter too much. It’s when you zoom in that it helps.

@@thejoatmoo I think a lot of folks saying they have looked through an NX8 and say it's tight are doing so in a gun shop. It's a lot different when pocketing/shouldering a rifle with an NX8 on it and looking down range at targets at distance. Way different in my opinion, and it isn't as terrible as people make it out to be.

Have both, depends. Doing more work up close, I would take my NX8. Distance, ATACR. NX8 is lighter, shorter, nuclear bright red dot like, larger FOV. ATACR has cleaner glass and more light transmission for beyond 300 shots. Pick which is more important you and go from there because either can be more than adequate in both roles, but excel in one more than the other if that makes sense. Good luck brother

Every time I think about buying one of theses I end up with a vortex 1-10. The price on the atacr is just crazy. The vortex has more zoom and a great reticle. I’ve picked up 2 for around $1700 each. I do have an atacr 4-16 and love it but I think I paid right around $2000 which is less than the 1-8 atacr lol. If they could lower the price on the 1-8 I’d buy one but I’m not paying $2500 plus.
