Just picked up this game for its art and theme. After watching your video I realize it’s much more complex than I am used to as I am mainly a dungeon crawler guy who enjoys narrative and immersive games. However I’m going to commit to some time with it and see where it takes me. Thanks for the great playthrough

Great. I was prepared to ignore this one and you had to go and make a game play video that got me interested. The action selection and card play looks really strong.

Love the art direction of this game! I'll put my two questions at the top so you can see them easily. 1) Do you think the track is too long? Do you think it would be possible to climb to the upper part of the track? 2) In all the playthroughs I've seen, people have used the same two nightmares. Is that because the publisher only supplied those two? Do you have any information on how the other nightmares operate? This is the third, and by far the best, playthrough of Nightmare Cathedral I've seen. I really appreciate that you showed the cards and the board clearly so that we can follow along easily. Also, in the other games I watched, the players seemed to largely ignore the ritual track, but you showed how it can be utilized (especially later in the game) to score points. And thank you for doing a three-player game; the two-player games look fun but it seems to shine at three and up. Jon, I've watched your videos off and on over the years. We have absolutely relied on your expertise at times to learn games (hello, The Red Cathedral) because you are so skilled at what you do. (Most demonstrators of games just go through their turns; you also talk about the strategy behind why you are doing each move.) Honestly, I marvel at how you keep thngs straight in multi-player games while also managing the filming/lighting/uploading of videos. I've just joined Patreon so that I can now help you since you have helped me so much in the past. Thank you for everything that you do and I'm looking forward to delving into even more of your content!

I'm glad you enjoyed this :) Regarding your questions: 1. I never played a full game, so I can't really speak to this one. 2. The publisher sent me ~10 nightmare miniatures and a list of suggested nightmare pairings. I went with the pairing that seemed to be the most straightforward for teaching purposes, it seems others likely did the same thing. Sorry about the overlap. Thanks again for the Patreon support! Sorry it took so long to respond to this comment, I sometimes forget about them for a week or two and then spend an hour or two catching up with my responses :P

Feels like it shares a little design DNA with Cthulhu Wars, which isn't a bad thing. I really like the consistent player engagement, even on other player's turns 👌

Hi Jon And thank youbvery much for the great video! I know you dont officially "review" games here but i must say i did hear you getting excited in the later stages of the game, can i assume you enjoyed it? :)

I never did fully play this one with others, so what you see here is the entirety of my playing the game. I do vaguely remember thinking it had some cool things going on though, any excitement you heard should have been genuine :)

nice game I'm currently checking it... quick question how is the overall speed action for each player? it will be good up to 4 people or maybe 2-3 will be better?

I'm honestly not sure because I never played this with someone else. I'd suggest watching one of the live playthroughs that were made for the game, and maybe asking those creators what they think, since they experienced a full game play in real time.

As for the game based on the art of famous painter I wished there was more striking art in the game. But it seems the cards are mostly text and vast nightmerish landscapes from paintings are shrunk into blobs on the board. Feels like a wasted opportunity.

I would really love to hear your opinions on the games you play. Never heard them it's true and I would so much value them. Unfortunately I'm not in a financial position to patreon. Jon you are such a TEASE you know that ?

It is a shame that it makes the most sense to have those be exclusives, I'm sorry it means you can't enjoy them.

44:29 Could you really conform there? I thought you had to be adjacent to the worker placement spot. Or do you count as adjacent even though there's no arrow linking the two together?
@JonGetsGames

Adjacency just means the night spot touches the activated day spot, the arrow is only used for moving the dreamer from the day spot over. The arrow doesn't apply for adjacency.

A strange game, but there are things I like about it. I like the cards and action selection. I like the way limbo works and how it means you're sometimes OK with losing units. Some neat ideas here. But ultimately I'm just not a fan of dudes on a map area control, so this is still a pass from me unfortunately.

I couldn’t work it out. No idea why. I love Jon’s work and it is very helpful but I think all through I just kept wondering.. what’s the point of this? It’s not the theme as it’s a theme that would normally appeal to me. I think I’ll come back to watch this again as I might just be having an off day but so far the game just seems confusing.

Can you play a upgrade card on action you already upgraded?
