@@nightscapeimages.richard I saw an old building under a nearly full moon early one morning. It turned out well, lighting and composition wise, but when I got home and put it on my computer I could see the noise. So I went back at the same time the next morning and set it to ISO 100 and the sky looked A LOT better. No noise discernible to the eye. In each case I had to use a tripod so using the higher ISO simply doesn't make sense. Why use ISO 3200 in your case? It's better to not have the noise in the first place so one doesn't have to reduce it via software later. Most of the post-production stuff people do could be avoided if they put a little more thought into things when out shooting photos. One thing that strikes me is that I see people doing stuff on the computer, many times spending significant amounts of time, that could be done by spending just a few seconds considering things when taking the photo itself.
@nightscapeimages.richard

@@Anon54387 Thanks a lot for watching and for leaving a comment. Your shooting scenario is very different to this example as you had a "nearly full moon". I challenge you to go out and try that when there is no moon in the sky and see how many stars you can capture at iso100. That is a very much considered comment coming from many years of nightscape experience.
@Anon54387
4 жыл бұрын
@@nightscapeimages.richard I'll give that a shot on the 26th as there will be no moon. I take it I won't be able to see many stars without upping the ISO. At least if I understood your comment correctly. Still, I do see people spending significant amounts of time doing stuff on the computer that could be avoided if different choices were made when taking the photo. I'd rather, if at all possible, to minimize time on the computer and spend more taking photos. Thanks for the reply. I wasn't expecting one, to be honest, with the volume on this channel. You must enjoy interacting with people. It seems you reply quite a lot. Edit: I just watched your video on focusing to infinity with that small cubby house. Not to beat a dead horse, but couldn't a person reduce the ISO to 100 and just use a bulb for a longer exposure so as to avoid the noise? Perhaps I'm not seeing the problem.

Hi Richard I would of taken six dark frames to Help reduce the sencor heat noise :) I know its another step but one can really see the noise from the sencor around the corners of the frame in the sky images ! For those who are wondering how to do dark frames all you need to do is after you have taken your Sky images leave the camera settings the same just put the lens cap back on and take another six shoots before you start doing your light painting images ! Later in processing all you need to do is apply the same edit you have made to your sky images and export as Tiffs as you will be doing for your Sky then load them in the dark frame tab in Sequator

Really informative video, it shows that you don't have to go grab top-of-the-line gear and spend $10,000 to capture some great images. The only thing I did notice is that a lot of the sensors tend to give the purple vignette around the edges and that's due to not capturing enough light. That's really the big con to not using a star tracker is that you can't get super long exposures without star trails from the Earth rotating and since you can't capture a ton of light you'll get that vignette, which of course can be toned down quite a lot through post processing, but that in turn does take up a lot of time depending on how bad it is. I've seen quite a few videos on sensors and how they do in capturing in darkness and most of them have issues with that purple vignette or yellow and purple banding when trying to capture astrophotography/nightscape images on shorter exposures, even on the more expensive camera bodies like the Canon EOS R and other cameras in that price range. Which of course in this situation, you wouldn't really want to use a star tracker as you are capturing a foreground and don't want the camera moving from the composition that you're trying to capture, so it's kind of a trade off to have to do a little extra post processing work, but all in all they usually turn out really great and so did the one in this video. I'm going to be doing a lot more of this at my lake house as I want to capture the sky with the open dock in the foreground and the water inside our cove for a large canvas print. I actually got really lucky on my setup as far as price goes, I picked up a Canon 6D MKii, the kit lens, extra batteries, chargers, and a vertical grip (all in all about $2500 worth of gear) for about $800 from a co-worker who had one and hardly ever used it (I think less than 700 photos had been captured on the camera when I bought it). I definitely appreciate the in-depth explanation on this as I've learned a lot more from this video than a lot of others combined.

Rheinmetall Borsigue That is true, but dont forget the lenses.. FF lens has twice the area compared to m4/3 lenses and that lets a FF sensor to receive far more photons over the same amount of time. The F number might be the same, but the actual T stops different. Today even a phone camera lenses are pretty bright at 1,7f ar even 1,4f although they are considerably bright, look at the physical size of them.. Imagine that the sensor is behind that lens and the opening of that lens is so tiny, the sensor is even tinier.. Yet they are 1,7f they cant compare in light gathering capabilities to a bigger sensor with a lens that has more surface area.. The only reason a phone cameras can struggle in low light conditions - they take a series of pictures and stack them in postproccesing to increase the light gathered, so the picture you take with the phone is a set of many exposures in most cases a short "video" of ~20 frames or so stacked together. While camera gathers all that information in one exposure.. So when compared FF with m4/3 its is 2x crop, so twice the amount of information... In real life scenarios on a sunny day 2x more information might not be the big difference because the amount of light in the atmosphere is very huge, even phones are doing OK, but when the sun sets the difference is becoming clearer with each minute after the dawn.

I see you have purple fringing left in bottom of the image and on either side of the tractor. My normal way of fixing that would to create a selection and use the Vibrance/Saturation tool to remove the deep purple cast. I would fix the bottom with the purple image fringing with a gradient filter in Lightroom again using the Vibrance and Saturation sliders. An alternative would be to do everything in Lightroom and use a highly feathered brush and again use that brush to desaturate the areas of purple. Peter Zelinka uses an adjustment layer with a gradient mask in his stacked Photoshop work flow to deal with the Nikon purple fringe. What is your preferred method? Another truly excellent video! My wife is using my D7200 for her Nightscape Photography so this video is super helpful. Actually these techniques are helpful to us full frame owners too. The D7200 with the Sigma 150-600 lens is an amazing wildlife setup (900 mm reach). Thank again for all the effort you put into your videos.

Thanks a lot for watching. Really appreciate your insights. I don't usually have any purple fringing to worry about as I typically shoot the foregrounds at a much lower iso. This video was showing the difference between the singe exposure (which will have lots of fringing) and the stacked and layered image which does not. The Nikon Z6 is really good with dealing with this issue.

I liked the way you imagined, planned, executed the shots knowing perfectly well how you're going to process all the parts through three different softwares, each for a specific purpose, eventually into a single great image. Says a lot about your experience. Of course, most experts hesitate to reveal their actual thought process. Thanks for your insights.

@@nightscapeimages.richard I just came upon this and watched it and subscribed! I come from a province known for it's sky. Hence we are called land of the living skies. I am great with photoshop (as a graphic designer) so your instructions were easy to follow! And the camera... glad to know it's possible with a cropped camera. Just wonder... I was looking for the program you used for the stars. I couldn't find it. Do you have a link?

I love night photography and I use a Sl3 with a kit lens (until I buy a better lens)! I tend to "sacrifice" some stars for less noise, with a lower ISO, but now I will try this technic and see how the Brazil's south sky looks. Subscribed!

Hi Richard,Firstly I must say how fantastic your tutorials are. I have been watching them for a while now. In particular your tutorials on 'crop sensor camera with kit lens'. The way you explain your method of work is so interesting and easy to follow. my camera is a Nikon D3300 with kit lens 18-55mm f3.5 @ 18mm.I have been toying with the idea of light painting for some time, and looking around, came upon your tutorials, and since then I haven't looked back.I have a couple of points perhaps you could help me with. Instead of using the kit lens, I have two lenses from the old 35mm film days that I would like to try and capture the milky way with. (I have already fitted the correcting lenses to both.) The first lens is a Pentacon 29mm f2.8. The second is an Asahi Pentax f2, but is 55mm unfortunately. Like you I could probably create a vertirama with the 55mm, as I love creating panoramas. Could you please advise what ISO I might get away with for each of these lenses. I noticed the camera you used for the tutorial, you were able to wind in the white balance value. With my camera the only settings I have are:- AUTO - INCANDESENT - FLUORESENT - DIRECT SUNLIGHT - FLASH - CLOUDY - SHADE - PRESET MANUAL. I suppose AUTO might be the best option to adopt, and then correct in post production, unless there might be a way of using the PRESET MANUAL mode! I also have a wide angle Sigma 10-20mm f3.5 throughout of which I might try, but there is the question of edge distortion!I have already downloaded the software SEQUATOR in readiness for when I have taken the images.I think that's all for the moment.Thank you.Best regardsRichard.

Hi Richard, thank you so much for watching. The lenses you have mentioned are fairly long focal lengths and therefore may have trouble with the stars trailing more than a wider angle. Remember the stars are constantly moving and the longer focal length lenses require a shorter shutter time to "freeze" the stars as pinpoints. Regarding white balance, each of those symbols actually relate to a kelvin number. EG: Incandescent is 3200k, Flouresent is 4000k, Sunlight is 5500k etc. I would try them and see what you get.The Sigma lens may well be fine I reckon. A lot of it will come down to trial and error but you'll need to be careful of longer shutter speeds with those older lenses.

This video is absolutely fantastic, thank you! I've got a Canon 70D with a 10-22mm lens, and always wondered how I could get good night sky images, this seems like the perfect thing to try, definitely going to give it a go. Was always worried my crop sensor would never really be good enough to get a decent image. Now all I have to do is wait for a night with no clouds (not very often here in Ireland haha). Cheers!

Thank you so much for this video. You gave me peace of mind :) I am planing to do my first night sky shooting ever and I was concerned (still but much less) because I do not have the "right" lens to use with my old Nikon D700. I have a Nikon DX 18-55 f/3.5 and a Tamron 28-300 f/3.5 (full frame) I was thinking in the Tamron to use the camera's full frame, but now I feel more comfortable trying the to use the Nikon. Thank you again.

As the Milky Way season kicks off, I am so tempted to try this with my D7000. It’s a shame that I get an even weirder purple cast at ISO 3200. I’ll try that that tho. Thankfully I am getting a z6 II in June. I also really appreciated the 24-70 f4 kit lens video you did. It shows that sensor can handle 6400 acceptably. Thank you for your commitment to teach. You are a gem
