Hello Jenna [ Koality Reactions ] ! Nightwish fan here, your musical quest summoned me. Welcome to the world of symphonic metal! And thank you for checking this legendary band! This live recording is from Wacken Open Air 2013, together with Floor Jansen [pronounced Yansen], the 3rd and present female singer of the band, in front of an 82K audience. About the instrumental and vocal added parts - it's good to know they recorded their orchestral and vocal back tracks with prestigious institutions as London Philharmonic Orchestra. London's The Metro Voices choir group and London's Young Musicians Children's Choir as their regular partners. Since this is your first Nightwish reaction, it is my duty to give you the [updated] short history of the band concentrated by Ann Waychoff, one of the biggest Nightwish fan who has since passed away (and I am doing this in her memory): " Nightwish was started in 1996.They are considered a Symphonic Metal band, with a female main singer. They are from Finland. Tuomas Holopainen [pronounced Tuo-mas], the keyboard player, composes and writes the lyrics for 95% of their music. [Sami Vanska was the bassist of the band starting with their 2nd studio album, he was with them until 2001. Then Marco Hietala was bassist and vocals, since 2001 to 2020. He recently announced his retirement both from the band and the public life for the next year at least. Then in May 2021 Jukka Koskinen [pronounced Yukka] became the bassist of the band, for the Human :II: Nature tour - and recently, the band announced he became a permanent member] And there is the guitarist Emppu Vuorinen [he also recorded the bass lines for their 1st studio album]. Then there is Troy Donockley from UK who is a multi-instrumentalist and vocals. Jukka Nevalainen [pronounced Yukka] is the drummer. In 2015 due to Jukka's health issues Kai Hahto became the drummer and as of now is a permanent addition. Nightwish has had three singers. 1st one was Tarja Turunen [pronounced Tarr-ya] (Operatic vocals). She was with them until 2005. The 2nd one was Anette Olzon from Sweden (Poppy, strong vocals). She was with them until 2012.The 3rd and current singer is Floor Jansen, from Netherlands (power, operatic, soprano.....most versatile) - you just heard her. There are live concerts that you should use depending on what era. From Wishes to Eternity and End of an Era (Tarja), Montreux Festival live 2012 and Exit Festival (Anette), Live at Wacken 2013, Live at Wembley, Live at Tampere, Vehicle of Spirit, Decades live (Floor). I hope this helps. I want to welcome you to the Nightwish community. I hope you like them enough to continue the journey. Believe me Nightwish will surprise you with their songs. You will never know what to expect. They are unbelievable live. I want to warn you that Nightwish fans are hard core. So be prepared. lol " For an extended set of suggestion (with links), I posted 2 huge comments in the community tab in my main YT channel: www.youtube.com/@gabriel.bardac/community 🤘

Thank you Gabriel!! (I love that the Nightwish community is so tight-knit that everyone knows you're the bringer of Nightwish info.) Ahhh symphonic mental... this makes a lot of sense now. It did feel much more symphonic than what I was expecting. So cool that they worked with the London Philharmonic Orchestra! Thank you for the warm welcome and all the band history. So lovely you're doing it in Ann's memory. I'll definitely be listening to more Nightwish, so thanks for the recommendations (and the links). Appreciate you! 🤍

@@KoalityReactions Now it's 11 PM here, and I found some time to review your reaction. First observation: the one who recommended Nightwish to you as an introduction to the Metal genre has all my respect, because this band has proven over time to be a real gateway for non-metalheads into a new musical universe. This is my situation as well, until a few years ago I listened to other genres of music, but only after listening to Nightwish did I feel that I had truly arrived at home, that my horizons had opened. When you want to go further on the path of our 1.83m (6ft.+) tall Dutch Valkyrie Queen Floor Jansen besides Nightwish, here is some background information on the best and most versitale female singer of our time. Floor joined the band 'After Forever' in 1997 at the age of 16. Here are some of my favourites: Energize me: kzitem.info/news/bejne/x6Cjmnaoh3OXaag Monolith of Doubt: kzitem.info/news/bejne/lIqjsXyhiqplaIo Dreamflight: kzitem.info/news/bejne/mGljxXpvqaSpZ34 Floor attended the then new Rock Academy in 1999 and graduated in 2003. She also studied 2 years at the Conservatory (1 year Music Theatre and 1 year Opera). Here is a link to a part of a TV show (with english subtitles) of the reunion of the class of the Rock Academy with mostly backstage footage of the Tampere concert of Nightwish in 2015: kzitem.info/news/bejne/o2mEr5qraaOnp5w 'After Forever' disbanded in 2009 and Floor started her own band 'Revamp' from scratch. Here she experimented with different vocal styles within one song from full operatic to death growls in seconds. Here are some examples: Misery’s no Crime: kzitem.info/news/bejne/tISGy6eCf4afiJw Disdain: kzitem.info/news/bejne/1X-n4ISOs5p2qKw Besides managing a band on her own she also did a lot of vocal coaching and as she is a perfectionist, she wants to do everything at 100%+. Eventually she had to pay the price and got a burnout. She had just recovered when end of september 2012 the call came from Nightwish to fill in for the remainder of the North American Tour at first as their second singer Annette got ill. Floor had just 48 hours to learn the whole setlist. There is a documentary made of this world tour: kzitem.info/news/bejne/15573p-jkH1-eIo Floor joined Nightwish after this iconic Wacken concert in 2013 as permanent member of the band. Floor continued to perform with 'Revamp’ also, but it was clear that she could not combine the two for much longer, so 'Revamp' disbanded in 2016. Floor did a side project called 'Northward' where she dived into the Hard Rock scene. The song 'While Love Died is a must see:: kzitem.info/news/bejne/w3eftpmJrKN1YGk A suggestion to a christmas song sung by Floor. Here is a link to a performance in Finland with a special guest with the best seat you could imagine: kzitem.info/news/bejne/2qNnvZdrnZ-GjJg Her stunning performances on the Dutch TV show 'Beste Zangers 2019' gave her at last some more recognition in her home country where she was relatively unknown until then. There are numerous guest appearances with other bands to find on KZitem. To see how to get a crowd of metalheads silenced and in awe watch her featuring with the band 'Epica' and the song 'Stabat Mater Dolorosa:, kzitem.info/news/bejne/sqea3HqGe3l_Y5g and to see her in full opera mode, watch her rendition of 'O Mio Babbino Caro' from Puccini: kzitem.info/news/bejne/tpuK33WQrYhmqn4 As live concerts were cancelled and home isolation due to the Covid situation, Floor discovered KZitem in these years. Mindblowing covers, chats with her idols and other singers, vocal masterclasses, personal insights and so much more. She even made a video reacting to herself singing Ghost Love Score at Wacken. Lots of technical info and some memories of her starting with Nightwish:. kzitem.info/news/bejne/so2VmXpncWiQaIY Also her Fan Friday videos are hilarious. Just unpack some of the presents she left on her channel. Also videos of her solotour she did with songs of her impressive career. Her latest endeavour is her stunning solo album ‘My Paragon.Floor is a high sensitive person, so peace and quiet is as important for her. Living by the woods in Sweden with her husband Hannes Van Dahl (drummer of the band Sabaton), daughter Freja (turned 6 years last march), and another on its way, a horse and pony, a dog and a bunch of cats, she found this.

I would also recommend an often overlooked song that is sung by Floor but outside her solo work. This was for a TV documentary, it is called in Dutch 'De Beelden blijven' kzitem.info/news/bejne/xmxjnIKMrJSYaYo. But don't worry if you don't understand Dutch, it's message is so important that it was subtitled in 40 languages in a community effort. For those who still prefer English, there is also 'The fight goes on' kzitem.info/news/bejne/wpenrKqaqH50fJg, but without video of Floor singing.

You really can't go wrong with any of the Beste Zangers. The theme is a number of artists from the Netherlands get together and each gets a day where the other sing songs in his or her style. Metal is not big in the Netherlands and Floor was practically unknown even by most of the other singers. She opened the show and literally stunned everyone. She went on to stun everyone each week. IMO its best to start with the Opener for Henk Poort ( Vilija Lied ) and IMO best to use the English subtitled episodes that really give you a feel for her and the others. I am a huge fan of Nightwish but this show really showcases her talent and the fact she could dominate any type of music she chose to focus on. Really a generational talent, and although I am a fanboi I believe an objective statement.

Welcome to the wonderful world of Nightwish and the genre Symphonic Metal. It is indeed a deep, deep rabbit hole!! Nightwish Wacken 2013 was one of those moments when a band completely clicked, every single song from the entire set is a banger, and its even more impressive when you know Floor had only joined the band about 10 months earlier while they were touring the US (she took the call to come sing for them and had just 48 hours to get to the US and learn the set list before she did her first show with the band!) And yes, describing "metal" music can be confusing as it covers so many sub-genres and styles, symphonic metal being one of them. Don't worry about it, let your ears and brain work out what you like and what you don't, not every piece is going to be to your tastes, and that's perfectly okay. Just enjoy the journey.

@@KoalityReactionsOh undoubtedly, its the only way to listen to music imho, you either like something or you don't and no amount of being told that something is good /bad matters, its down to your own ears/brain/heart telling you what you like. Unfortunately, in the world of reactions, you'll get a lot of opinions being thrown at you but as the old saying goes "opinions are like arse-holes......everyone has got one!!" NW is a perfect example, you'll often hear some quite strong statements about NW's original singer Tarja and how she's better than Floor and "the true Queen of NW" etc, and then others will defend Floor (and poor Annette in the middle gets kind of forgotten!!) but these people forget that we are blessed to have had 3 great singers in the band and each played their part in the evolution of the group, each helped to make NW what they are today. People focus to much on "better" as if its a competition all the time instead of thinking "different".

@@KoalityReactionsplease keep "The Greatest Show on Earth" and "The Poet and The Pendulum" on stand-by, at least for a little while (even if they are frequently requested): I think you will appreciate them better, once you have some other Nightwish songs under your belt (there's plenty of them: all bangers, every one is a journey of its own, no one is similar to another). I liked your reaction: yes metal has a lot of sub-genres, so everyone could find his/her cup of tea... Tuomas (founder, keyboardist and main composer of Nightwish) doesn't like harsh vocals, while Floor (current singer) did like them when in her previous bands (After Forever and ReVamp). Nightwish is from Finland, the current female lead, Floor Jansen, is Dutch, from the Netherlands. Rock opera is close to, or partly, what Nightwish is about, but the genre is called symphonic metal. The original female lead vocalist, Tarja, was more operatic than Floor, the 3rd female lead of Nightwish, you just heard her. She can sing from operatic to growling. The pipes are just for looks. There are 3 keyboards behind it. Synthesizers and piano. They also have a backing track recorded by a symphony orchestra, because there's a limit how much Tuomas Holopainen, the keyboardist, can do live on stage. He writes vast majority of Nightwish songs. (He can play pipe/church organ. He was given the chance to play one huge organ in Helsinki Music Hall. "Holopainen chuch organ Kantrilehti" A 2 minute video on Kantrilehti channel. welcome to the fantastic symphonic metal universe of Nightwish Band, their live performances are some of the things that come so close to epic that they get to be mythical and of course Floor Jansen, queen of the stage and goddess of music, she can sing anything in any musical style she wants (WARNING! her voice, her stage presence, her charisma, in one word: her "spell" is highly addictive). this concert (wacken 2013) is incredibly epic and deserves to be watched and reacted entirely, song by song, in particular I suggest these three songs: "song of myself", "storytime" and "ever dream" this performance of "ghost love score" is one of the three best performances of the nightwish band, together with "the poet and the pendulum" from 2015 concert at the london wembley arena and "the greatest show on earth" from 2015 concert in tampere - finland (actually there is a fourth best performance: "dead boy's poem" from the 2018 concert in buenos aires).

Symphonic metal, which is one of many metal variations, is often an appealing one for many reasons. The clear impulses from classical symphonic music, which can also be an aspect of rock operas, is among those features. On a slightly related note, and a project that has been exploring the metal opera universe for a few decades, is a project from Holland called Ayreon. Their song "The Day That the World Breaks Down" is another song that should be easy for a metal newbie to decode, especially one with an existing interest in the rock opera universe I'd imagine.

It's fascinating to watch newcomers to metal open the door and more or less timidly peek through the crack. Not to seem disrespectful because I really enjoyed your reaction, but the world awaiting you beyond said door is more vast and varied than you can imagine, not so much in the (North) American metal scene, which is really pretty barren of organic creativity today, but especially Europe. Not just Europe, but especially Europe. I'm going to suggest two things (meant to be played together) from a rather obscure Italian symphonic metal band Diabulus In Musica (the band) and the KZitem video is 'Call From a Rising Memory and Hidden Reality'. There is no music video and no live equivalent, so I would not expect you to do an actual reaction, this is just for your own journey, and to give you another taste of lady-fronted 'opera-metal' as you called it. What there are great videos and live recordings of is Epica, which has been called Nightwish's sister band as they are great friends, and almost anything from 'Retrospect' is pretty much mandatory on the menu of symphonic metal discovery, (and the show, featuring a full symphony and choir was such a production that it took an entire year to organize), a little harder but also capable of angelic beauty, because their singer Simone Simons is just... special like that. And has only grown and improved vocally in the decade since. She was also a few months pregnant with her first child which could not have made things much easier for her, like breathing for starters! ...but there are so many more things to discover in here! Welcome, child, we've been waiting for you!

You mention how she is classically trained, because she is able to sustain those high notes. You don't even know yet. Women have taken over metal today. There are so many unbelievably talented women in metal right now that you can't even imagine. Live metal concerts have become a full fledged estrogen fest, it's unbelievable. Nightwish, Epica, Unleash the Archers, Jinjer, Spiritbox, Arch Enemy, Ignea, Seas On the Moon, Butcher Babies, Baby Metal, Poppy, and the list just keeps going on. There's even a ten year old girl who got her break singing Spiritbox songs who just released a metal album. Women be luuuvin the metal right now for some reason.

Hey KR, nice reaction and welcome to the wonderful world of Nightwish. NW aren't really like ANY other band, metal or anythng else you care to put a label on..even in this genre (so called "Symphonic Metal"). Finding NW is sometimes a life changing experience, it was for me, and Ghost Love Score is often the doorway down into the rabbit hole. Hope you do some more reactions to NW, I don't think you'll regret it! The genre is called "symphonic metal" and ideally it should be performed with a full orchestra behind the band. But only (to my knowledge) the band Epica did that at their 10th anniversary concert and they must have lost a lot of money then. By the way, this singer Floor Jansen (pronounce Yansen) sings two songs during that concert too with her good friend Simone Simons who is the lead singer of Epica. Floor Jansen is Dutch, performs in metal bands since whe was 16 and was trained at the rock acadamy in Tilburg (NL) and a few years of music university (opera) which she did not finish. She went in the direction of musical theatre (together with metal her true love) and she learned stage presence from a musical theatre teacher. Floor calls herself a vocal nerd. She is a HSP and has absolute hearing, and is a staunch perfectionist. She recently started a solo career besides Nightwish doing (good) pop songs she mostly wrote herself, focussing on mental health in all its aspects. (album My Paragon). She chose pop, because she had never done that before. She is regarded inside and outside the metal community as the best female singer of her generation, mainly because she can sing everyting, death growls, switching to full opera on a dime and everyting in between. She has many, many colors in her voice, without losing her vocal identity. If you want to see the masterpiece of Nightwish, it is in my opinion the Poet and the Pendulum, by far. And I am not even a metal fan.

@@KoalityReactions That makes me so happy! Oh, and in case no one explained... 1. Wacken is in Germany, pronounced VAW-KEHN. And 2. The "pipe organ thing" is a custom wine rack fashioned after the Sebelius Monument in Helsinki, then converted into a keyboard stand!

It is not Christmas time, but the song "Christmas Truce" by Sabaton would likely have a similar jaw dropping impact, partially for the historical subject matter as well as the production. A truly incredible song! I don't like to give spoilers, but Floor Jansen has a little surprise easter egg in that song. See if you find it.

Metal music has about 30 different subgenres so not every type is appreciated by everyone. Nightwish is mainly Symphonic (orchestra in background) Metal, but they can do anything, which you'll have a chance to hear if you decide to continue.

"Heavy metal", from which all further metal subgenres originated, was originally a rather melodic, epic genre and strong clean vocals were typical for heavy metal from the very beginning. Nightwish in general and symphonic metal in particular directly descended from the heavy metal genre. If you imagined metal as something more aggressive, with growls, blastbeats and angry lyrics, then these are other "branches" of the metal evolution. Although there may also be elements of more extreme music in symphonic metal. In the last 25-30 years, aggressive metal subgenres have become more common, so some (especially younger) people may even doubt whether Nightwish is metal. The truth is that Nightwish has inherited the traditions of the original heavy metal to a greater extent than those more extreme bands with which metal is associated these days. For example, Iron Maiden is one of the legendary bands that defined the sound of heavy metal. If you listen to them, I think you'll hear some of similarities with Nightwish and symphonic metal. Here, for example, is a good example of Iron Maiden music, "Hallowed Be Thy Name" from a concert in 1982: kzitem.info/news/bejne/mKyGmJx8f4hmano

Yesss, I did imagine it being much heavier with a lot of growling vocals. So this makes sense. Very cool - thank you for the history! I’m glad I’m learning that there’s different sub genres of metal. Can’t wait to listen to more! I’ve definitely heard of the band Iron Maiden but I probably can’t recall a specific song. I’ll def listen to them! Thanks!

@@KoalityReactions Try '80s metal' for the older/original mostly-clean-vocals style of the genre (I@m not a big fan of the later harsh-vocals style either). Some bands to listen to are Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin (actually all from the 70s), then Iron Maiden, AC/DC (Rock rather than metal, but great anyway), Judas Priest, Rainbow, Dio, Metallica. The other classic symphonic metal band that pretty-much invented the genre is Therion. They started doing this sort of thing about 3 years before Nightwish formed, and they are still going too, through numerous changes in personel and style. They've been big on choirs and having 3-4 vocalists. One band with some harsh vocals that you might like is Epica - probably the 2nd-most successful symphonic metal band in the world (after Nightwish). Oh and you need to check out Ayreon too, which is more of a fascinating musical project than a band. That lot should keep you entertained for a while. There are of course hundreds more bands and loads of great music, but you want to start gently :-) This is a deep hole you about to fall into...

Now, bear in mind that at this time, Floor was a stand-in vocalist with Nightwish having dropped their previous singer half way through a US tour (see 'Learn the set list in 2 day. This being said, there were over 82,000 in the audience and Floor had all of them in the palm of her hand, especially at the end of this track.

If you want to hear the entire singing rang of singer Floor Jansen, listen to "Shoemaker." It's an homage to Eugene Shoemaker who discovered the comet Shoemaker-Levy that crashed into Jupiter. His ashes are interred on the moon.

Welcome to the amazing world of Nightwish and the Dutch queen of symphonic metal. No, not your typical metal band. A metal band with beautiful melodies and an amazing singer. So much more to experience lovely lady. I hope to see you again very soon. Choose the softer songs from Nightwish and I think you will come to love this band. Tuomas (keys) writes most of the music and very poetic style lyrics. Originally Floor was sent by Allfather Odhinn to Midgard to gather the souls of fallen warriors to Valhalla, but she got distracted and joined a series of bands. However, Floor still gathers souls by her grace, beauty and the sheer power of her vocals. We give thanks for her at our Blots regularly and hope that Odhinn won't notice that she has never returned to Asgard. ALL HAIL THE VALKYRIE GODDESS!!! The Nightwish Army is incoming! There are so many sub-genres of metal, some you'll love, some you be ok with, some that you won't like. It's the same for me. But Nightwish! I find it hard to comprehend not liking them. Have you already heard the song Ever Dream from them? Most people who listen Nightwish for the first time choose or is indicated to listen the Ghost Love Score. But give a try for this one that I mention. You'll see a little bit of Marko Hietala (the bassing who unfurtunatly left the band) singing in adition to Floor Jansen. It's a sweet, confortable and beautiful song. Thanks for the react. I love to see all kind of people with all different music taste hearing Floor and Nightwish for the very first time.
