Hello Robert Houghton ! Nightwish fans here, your reaction just appeared on our radar.. Welcome to the world of symphonic metal! And thank you for checking this legendary band, performing here at Wacken Open Air festival 2013, in front of a 82k+ audience. About the instrumental and vocal added parts - it's good to know they recorded their orchestral and vocal back tracks with prestigious institutions as London Philharmonic Orchestra, London's The Metro Voices choir group and London's Young Musicians Children's Choir as their regular partners. As I could see, you both enjoyed the performance, and appreciate musicianship of all band members, but most of all - the stellar vocals and charisma of Floor Jansen, our Dutch metal queen. You explained pretty well at the end the meaning of the lyrics, cool :) If you'll continue this path, you'll find a lot of meaningful lyrics. Since this is your first Nightwish reaction, it is my duty to give you the short history of the band concentrated by Ann Waychoff, one of the biggest Nightwish fan who has since passed away (and I am doing this in her memory): " Nightwish was started in 1996.They are considered a Symphonic Metal band, with a female main singer. They are from Finland. Tuomas Holopainen, the keyboard player, composes and writes the lyrics for 95% of their music. Marco Hietala is the Bassist and vocals .And there is the guitarist Emppu Vuorinen . Then there is Troy Donockley from UK who is a multi-instrumentalist and vocals. Jukka Nevalainen is the drummer. In 2015 due to Jukka's health issues Kai Hahto became the drummer and as of now is a permanent addition. Nightwish has had three singers. 1st one was Tarja Turunen (Operatic vocals). She was with them until 2005. The 2nd one was Anette Olzon from Sweden (Poppy, strong vocals). She was with them until 2012.The 3rd and current singer is Floor Jansen, from Netherlands (power, operatic, soprano.....most versatile) - you just heard her. There are live concerts that you should use depending on what era. From Wishes to Eternity and End of an Era (Tarja), Montreux Festival live 2012 and Exit Festival (Anette), Live at Wacken 2013, Live at Wembley, Live at Tampere, Vehicle of Spirit, Decades live (Floor). I hope this helps. I want to welcome you to the Nightwish community. I hope you like them enough to continue the journey. Believe me Nightwish will surprise you with their songs. You will never know what to expect. They are unbelievable live. I want to warn you that Nightwish fans are hard core. So be prepared. lol " Hope you'll continue this journey with us, so I'll drop here a list of songs with the current lineup of the band you may like (please consider this list of links only as "a tip of the iceberg", an indication that they have a vast and very diverse repertoire, and not as something mandatory): "Romanticide" live at Wacken 2013 (metal) kzitem.info/news/bejne/27CVnYN5fIOdi6g "Storytime" live at Wacken 2013 (uplifting vocals) kzitem.info/news/bejne/0ayhv6uFg4yAgYo "Ever Dream" live at Wacken 2013 (uplifting vocals) kzitem.info/news/bejne/ko6fmqJunXyUeW0 "Song Of Myself" live at Wacken 2013 (dark/metal) kzitem.info/news/bejne/zYerm4WgopZ5ipw "Dead Boy's Poem" - live Buenos Aires 2018 (soulful ballad) kzitem.info/news/bejne/tG57mYBtoJl9gII "Ghost River" live at Wacken 2013 (metal) kzitem.info/news/bejne/kWubz6iaZndyaX4 "Dark Chest Of Wonders" live at Wacken 2013 (metal, the greatest show opener ever) kzitem.info/news/bejne/sKyFqmqunpWhm2k "My Walden" live at Wembley 2015 (celtic / folk) kzitem.info/news/bejne/zKSny31uaWmLn44 "Sleeping Sun" live at Tampere 2015 (ballad) kzitem.info/news/bejne/06ml2qCwq2uogaw "The Islander" live at Tampere 2015 (Marco in charge..) kzitem.info/news/bejne/u6Vu1JeBmGecrZg "Stargazer" live at Tampere 2015 (operatic vocals / metal) kzitem.info/news/bejne/r55723WGkp-QiJw "Sahara" live at Tampa 2016 (middle eastern vibe) kzitem.info/news/bejne/zYqsv5qCmmaIn6A "Slaying The Dreamer" live at Buenos Aires 2018 (metal) kzitem.info/news/bejne/2HdqmqigmoJmoWU "I Want My Tears Back" live at Buenos Aires 2018 (celtic / folk vibe) kzitem.info/news/bejne/tXiFypuuo5RhnoI "Devil & The Deep Dark Ocean" live In Buenos Aires 2018 (metal) kzitem.info/news/bejne/1Whs2JOseouCY4Y "Weak Fantasy" live at Tampere 2015 (dark metal) kzitem.info/news/bejne/ooRomW2Gm6OTnaQ "7 Days To The Wolves" live at Wembley 2015 (dark metal) kzitem.info/news/bejne/uaypzKt3iZSIi5g And if you want to hear Floor growling :) then try "Yours Is An Empty Hope" live at Mexico City in 2015 kzitem.info/news/bejne/pautv2WaZn16pqg Last but not the least - they just released their 9th studio album on April 10th 2020 named "Human :||: Nature" - just take a peek to their official playlist: kzitem.info/door/PLihZ3gi5Yvzc0pfH2cbNKUUX8o3pb8eVg (for example: "Shoemaker", the 3rd track from this album, tells the story of Eugene Shoemaker, one of the founders of planetary science, whose ash was sent on the Moon after his death, as a tribute from the scientific community ..) You can also react to Floor Jansen "tapping" other musical genres in Beste Zangers 2019 (TV show from Netherlands) here is a playlist made by Floor herself (start listen it in reverse order..): kzitem.info/door/PL8iSYWeQhlimgUnWw1FDdiJN0msPzqpLo To understand better the context of this show you should visit also Jenniezelf's YT channel (En subtitled materials): kzitem.info For entire episodes of the show with En translation, you should check Denise Hofs's DM channel: www.dailymotion.com/xpinkeu/videos In these pandemic times, Floor Jansen has decided to make covers for us, which you can find on her YT channel kzitem.info/rock/xy4Ijz2QKXXJaREs-isxwA - there are already 4 covers there, the first is "Let It Go" from "Frozen" (8 weeks ago, already over 1.931M views), the second - "Alone" from "Heart" (released 6 weeks ago) - 767K and counting. Then 4 weeks ago she dropped the third cover, in Dutch: "Is Dit Nou Later" from Stef Bos - already 221K views in 4 weeks. Just before Christmas she made a powerful cover of "Ave Maria" - already 196K views. Just this friday she added a remastered / remixed version of the first one, "Let It Go" - already 77k.. Thank you! Waiting for more Nightwish reactions. All the best from RO. Stay safe.

Tuomas (keyboards) is one of the best composers of our time, Floor (lead vocal) is arguably the finest singer of our time, Marko (bass) not only plays bass, but also guitar... and he sings as well (he actually just won the Masked Singer Finland), and Troy (not featured in this song) is also a multi-instrumentalist that sings. Then we have Jukka (drums) who reminds me of Bonham with how he just pounds the crap out of the drums with such passion and energy, and then Emmpu (guitar) that sometimes gets overlooked with Tuomas and Floor shining so brightly... but he's a fantastic metal guitarist without ego. His solos are always perfect for the song. He can shred, but he never lets that overtake the song, more often than not choosing something more melodic. You'll also notice he's the band's jokester and is almost always smiling. The whole band has too much talent, lol, it's just not fair to other artists! As you'll see, the Nightwish Army will come hard, with lots of suggestions for more reactions, and they are all good, lol. NW has been around since the 90's, so the back catalog is huge. That said, most seem to prefer the newer/live songs that feature Floor. Without going into a huge discussion, Floor is the 3rd lead singer in Nightwish, and most would argue she is the most versatile, being able to sing all the songs from all Nightwish eras as well if not better than the originals. Nightwish touches on some more complex themes, and many of the songs are very personal to Tuomas. GLS you just reacted to is a gateway drug, lol, to the world of Nightwish, but it is also 1 of 3 songs considered the trinity in Nightwish circles along with Poet And The Pendulum and The Greatest Show On Earth. As some have mentioned prior to my comments, I would hold off on those two until you have some more Nightwish under your belt. They are complex compositions with deep meaning and it would be beneficial to "know" a bit more about Tuomas and Nightwish before you react to those, and both I would recommend looking up online first, researching the meaning before you do the reaction (assuming you're going to continue your Nightwish journey). I would highly recommend considering Storytime and Song of Myself from this same show, along with Romanticide and Yours Is An Empty Hope. Weak Fantasy and Dead Boy's Poem are two of my personal favs you might enjoy, but regardless of the path you take, I would also recommend hitting the live version of The Islander and the live cover of Pink Floyd's High Hopes as both of those feature Marko (bass) as lead vocalist. Sorry for the loooooong post, but us Nightwish people get excited and love to encourage others along their Nightwish journey. Especially reactors as we then get to re-introduce ourselves as well, vicariously through you! Welcome to the Nightwish Army!!!

Loved your attention to the lyrics! The songwriting is so moving and such a haunting expression of heartache. It really does feel a lot like a siren song, the song knows it's being self-destructive: "My fall will be for you/if you be the one to cut me, I'll bleed forever" but it's so relatable. The climactic lyric after eight minutes of build up is so sad: "Like the advent of May, I'll be there when you say 'Time to never hold our love'" and then the backing chorus lyrics change to "You were the one to cut me, so I'll bleed forever." I appreciated how you noticed that the songwriter is essentially voicing a cry for help, the writer really was not doing well at the time this was written (well over a decade ago) though the parties presumably involved in the break up seem to be in a healthier place nowadays (the more recent song "How's the Heart?" is quite a contrast).

Pastor Rob, i loved the reaction and the zeal with which you dove into the song. You really made the effort to look at this from every angle that you could. I don't see many people who look as deeply on a first listen to piece of music. I did find your commentary on platitudes concerning relationships rather entertaining in that most have been uttered by my self or by friends to me. I tend to learn the hard way. One small thing I have learned over the years lead me to tell my wife something at the very beginning of our relationship that took her several years to fully understand. Our relationship began after she had experienced the passing of her husband and she was concerned for me if the relationship did not move in the direction that at the beginning we both hoped it would. I simply smiled and told her that I was happy before you came along and I will be happy after you are gone. This simple and I admit callous sounding sentence sums up what I had to learn the hard way. That no earthly relationship will ever 'complete" you. That no person can "make" you happy. And that it is enormously selfish to ask that impossible task of someone. It means that I was whole, complete, and happy with myself and that none of that is conditional on her being in my life. Our relationship expands what I experience, but it is no less complete with or without it. Two broken people does not make a whole single person. Two less than complete people will never add up to two complete people. Each person in a relationship has to be whole or something will always be missing. I am not whole on my own, but it is not my wife that makes me whole, nor is it me that makes her whole. We both have God in our lives and it is he who made both of us whole before our relationship began.

Thanks for the best analysis of the lyrics to this heavily-reacted song. You really listened to it! Indeed it is about the craving or desire that persists for lost love, and how hard it is to avoid getting bitter about such losses. Aside from all the references to Adam & Eve, "the adoring Beast", an angel, a siren, etc... This song seems to have a lament for a child never had with the "Ghost Love" of the title. That seems to be who the angel carries off "without care for love and loss." Which the lamenter can deal with only by becoming as open to love as a child again ("redeem me into childhood, show me myself without a shell") which is an almost faith like message. Of course the lamented lost love she still feels gets one heck of a sendoff!

I had listened it "million" times when I realised what the choir was singing in the background; "My fall will be for you My love will be in you If you be the one to cut me I'll bleed forever" It´s like some kind of a confession of love...it just makes me tear up every time...Especially the change in the end: "My fall will be for you My love will be in you You were the one to cut me So I'll bleed forever"

Hello Pastor Rob! Love your channel! So... You have finally reacted to Nightwish! Be prepared for the deluge of the Nightwish army!!! You will receive MANY more requests of songs by this epic symphonic metal band. My biggest recommendation is to always choose a live version if available. I look forward to your reaction and commentary on their song "The Greatest Show On Earth". Once again, be sure to react to a live concert version. The song is about the composer's fascination with the science of evolution, and even include a reading by Richard Dawkins in the score. The song is over 24 minutes long, so be prepared for a LONG video, as I'm sure your commentary on that piece will be deep.

It's Symphonic Metal. This concert is also on DVD. 82,000 strong. Floor is our 6ft Angel, Valkyrie and Angel. The bassist Marco is a amazing singer also. Floor was only with the band for 10 months at this concert. She was still recovering from her burnout when the band called in 2012. She has her own KZitem Channel and has done 3 Masterclass es. They have 2 longer songs. Tuomas the keyboardist writes about 97 percent of the songs. Her growling is awesome and she used to be a vocal coach.

Welcome to your first stop of a probably long, surprising always awesome Nightwish journey. This band is from Finland. Tuomas is the keyboarder, Songwriter, composer. Marco is playing the bass and doing also the vocals. He is very versatile and an awesome singer as well. You might watch „The Islander“ from Tampere to experience this. Emppu is playing the guitar. He can shred it but he always does exactly that much, that is required by the song. Kai (also Wintersun) is now at the drums and replaced the original drummer Jukka (whom you saw here) who had stop playing the drums due to health issues. But he still is with the band. Julka was a perfect drummer and showman, Kai is a perfect drummer and a machine and beast at the drums. Then there is Troy, a multi instrumentalist from England who in older performances supported the band at some tracks but became luckily a full member of the band after this tour. He‘s a great singer as well. Last but not least there is Floor, the Dutch singer. She is the bands third singer after Tarja (operatic) and Annett from Sweden (pop/rock). She can sing really everything from opera over pop/ rock to growls This gig was at Wacken. Wacken is THE metal festival worldwide. Nightwish were one of the headliners in 2013. It is in the north of Germany in a rural area. Therefore the bullhead with flames is the Wacken symbol. There are more than 80.000 metalheads having a big party each year. Here are some suggestions for your next stops: -> Ghost Love Score (Wacken 2013): THE "traditional first song" to get into Nightwish. Floor is showing diferent capabilities and you can get a first understanding of Tuomas capability of songwriting -> There are only great songs from Wacken: „Story Time“ and "Ever Dream" are catchy in a very positive way. "Song of Myself" starts catchy and ends with everyone headbanging. "Romanticide", "Last Ride of the Day" and "Ghostriver" are the heavier ones. -> "Devil and the Deep Dark Ocean" (Buenos Aires) will give you a metal and power blast: Maximum speed and Marco (the singing bass player) becomes Hannibal Lecter ;-) -> "Yours an Empty Hope" from Wembley (have a good look!! at the growls. You'll be surprised.) -> „Dead Boys Poem“ from Buenos Aires (so amazing and emotional) -> „Weak Fantasy“ (Tampere): Kai the beastat the drums, Troy joins in, great duets with Floor and Marco, … -> Elvenjig / Elvenpath (Buenos Aires): Awesome intro and it continues on that level -> "The greatest Show on Earth" (Tampere) is one of the two most epic songs. The title is not about the gig, but about the topic of the song: The evolution of mankind. -> "The Poet and the Pendulum“ (Wembley) is my personal absolute masterpiece of Nightwish. Be sure to know the background of this song ahead (short version see below *) ***** From the new album there are for obvious reasons no live sessions so far. For all songs there are lyric videos, except for „Noise". But maybe you'll give some songs a try as well. It's an awesome album. Definitely not an "easy" one with a lot of really unique songs, different from what is "typical" for Nightwish. Floor said that she was really challenged to sing the songs that Tuomas wrote for her. Knowing her abilities, you can imagine that they are "special“. It‘s a good idea to hear the album in the given order, but nevertheless here are some of my options to some of the songs. -->"Noise" is probably the most "typical" song and the only one with "real video". The video is great as the song itself --> "Tribal" is the heaviest one and Kai, the drummer, had to change his normal setup to be able to play it. --> "Shoemaker" (about Eugene Shoemaker) is such a heavenly and epic song with the possible epic ending. -> „Pan“ is just an amazing ride. When it starts you for a moment think you‘re listening to Floors husbands band „Sabaton“. In the song you‘ll be reminded to „Tribal“ and „Noise“. -> Procession“ a rather calm song with so amazing vocals by Floor --> "Harvest" is so different with Troy singing, that you will wonder if you're listening to Nightwish. -> „Endlessness“ is Marcos song and shows his great voice. --> "Music", „How's the Heart", ... are really cool songs as well. Of course. The album challenged Floor as singer, which is not easy to do, as she is one of the best and most versatile singers in the world. ***** If you'd like to Explore Floor on her own: Beste Zangers Just in case (which I can really recommend) you're going to do "Beste Zangers" make sure you take the clips posted by "jenniezelf" on KZitem as she has also included the talking / interviews before and after with english subtitles. The concept of the show is, that on one day all singers sing a song for one of them. It's a song that is by that singer or a song that means a lot for him / her. So it is very interesting to get to know the story behind each song. And it will help to understand the reactions of the other singers. Floor is singing there in German, Dutch, Spanis and English. Her "Phanom of the Opera" duet with Henk Poort is legendary. ***** * Backstory for „Poet and the Pendulum“ Tuomas (the keyboarder and songwriter) was in depression after the split from their first singer Tarja. He was in the position to either commit suicide in real real life or to write a song about it and die within that song. Luckily he choose the latter option. He is the poet, "killed" by the pendulum. And afterwards there is darkness, silence and just a fading heartbeat. It gives me a shiver every time. As this song is so emotional for him all the others have an eye on him. He even had his the vocals turned off in his in ears. One detail showing the ingenuity of Tuoams: Exactly three minutes after the words "Now I have only three minutes and counting" he is "killed" by the pendulum. And then everything becomes dark and there is just this fading heartbeat of the dying poet. Here is the open letter Tuomas / the band wrote towards Tarja: nightwish.fandom.com/wiki/Open_Letter_to_Tarja_Turunen And here is her response: nightwish.fandom.com/wiki/Open_Letter_from_Tarja_Turunen From what I have heard, her husband/manager was (from the bands point of view) the core of the problem. There is one song addressing him: "Master Passion Greed" They never played it live and will never do so. It is maybe their heaviest song, but for sure the most angry one. You should definitely listen to it. Greetz from a German-Dutch concert photographer

Welcome to the world of Nightwish pastor and welcome to the art a the world of Tuomas Holopainen, mastermind, songwriter and keyboardist of Nightwish. Nightwish have a long history and they actually started their journey in 1996 with a song referencing directly to Jesus (the carpenter) and its life (i.e. Gethsemane). As time passed, and Tuomas grew up he apparently changed his mind about organized religions, and how they are abused to subjugate people and to justify violence (listen to weak fantasy). The band is today heavily inspired by the works of Richard Dawkins (the last two albums at least have a distinctive atheist feeling) but Tuomas is not the kind of guy that closes the door to spirituality that easily. He's still open and in search for the truth, so I won't be surprised if he changes mind in the future :)

I really liked your reaction and your analyzis of the lyrics. Tuomas Holopainen, the keyboardist, is the founder, leader and main, (90+%), songwriter, composer, arranger, lyrics writer of Nightwish. He had a Christian upbringing and there are quite a lot of references to the Bible, religion in his lyrics. One example, "wine turning into water", describing a relation gone bad, in the song "Romanticide". Nowadays he is an agnostic and highly critical of ORGANIZED religion. (Based on an interview of hers I think his wife Johanna Kurkela, a vocalist, has a religious, Christian conviction of some sort) A song called "Weak Fantasy" (Tampere 2015 version is great) is an example of criticism of organized, forced religion. I would love to hear your thoughts of that song. Or the "Greatest Show on Earth" Tampere 2015 version, a 20 minute masterpiece. It is a song about the big bang and evolution. What is your take on evolution and the big dang? "Shudder Before the Beautiful" Wembley Arena 2015 is a song about the beauty of the earth. Last year Tuomas wrote the song "Shoemaker" about Eugene Shoemaker, the scientist, the only man whose ashes have been sent to the Moon. Tuomas is a mean church organ, pipe organ player too. There is a 2 minutes video on YT in which he plays the huge pipe organ in The Music House in Helsinki Finland. Search for "Tuomas Holopainen kirkkourut". (kirkkourut = church organ) He is like a kid in a candy store. He talks about getting a biblical pompous feeling, the best thing, the best sound ever. In an interview, in 2007 I think it was, he said religion has never been a prison for him. So he obviously thinks it is for many people. His grabpa was a pastor, vicar, the leader of the local congrigation of the Finnish Evangelic Lutherian Chuch in Kitee, a town of 10 000 people in Eastern Finland, near the Russian border. Before him there was a long line of priests in the family. He had 7 daughters, but no son, no priest to continue the priesthood in hhe family. The interviewer provoked Tuomas by saying Nightwish is a religion. "Whenever you write a new song your followers read the lyrics like they were a holy scripture." Tuomas was not provoked:" I like the way you put it. May I quote you on that? My grandpa is smiling in his grave!" Young Tuomas hoped to be a biologist. He is very much into science. Nature and the see, lakes, forest are very important to him. When he has a writers block he goes to the forest, and makes a bonfire. Then he can go back home and continue writing. Music is his escape from the world, difficult things. "The Poet and the Pendulum" Wembley 2015, a 14 minute masterpiece, a virtual suicide of Tuomas, telling about his depression, the darkist 6 months of his life, after firing Tarja Turunen, the original female lead vocalist and a childhood friend of his. He was given the role of the bad guy. A huge media event in Finland, and a big thing around the world among the fans. Greetings from a Nightwish fan from snowy Helsinki Finland.

Great reaction guys. I particularly enjoyed your analysis of the song and lyrical content. I did smile when you mentioned a toxic relationship as in fact they performed another song at this concert entitled Romanticide which is about that very subject. Tuomas the main composer and lyricist for Nightwish tends to use a lot of imagery in his lyrics that hark back to the romantic poets from the "gothic" period. He also uses a lot of religious imagery in his songs, as I believe his grandfather was a minister back in his native Finland. Tuomas and the rest of the band are not religious and are in fact secular but they still incorporate a lot of religious imagery in most of their songs to date. Hopefully you'll check out some more of their songs. Stay safe.
