NIJU SHIHO (二十四步) - Shotokan kata. The author of the kata is unknown, but it is assumed that it was Seisho Arakaki, the Okinawan Karate and Kobudo expert. It originated from the Naha-te system. The name is composed of four kanji characters and it can be translated as ”24 Steps”. The first three characters signify the number 24, while the fourth one can refer to a direction, step, side, etc. The old name of this kata is Niseishi, which is an Okinawan word with the same meaning. Niju-Shiho is practised in many styles, almost completely unchanged. The duration of the kata is 40-45 seconds. Some Okinawan experts compare the starting moves with the tsunami waves hitting the coast. This principle, which runs through the entire kata, describes how in one move, the attack is received and the opponent is pushed back, until the deciding counter-strike.
