I am curious, though... With that reasoning, if everyone agreed with you, what work would these people have at all? What income would support them? Things in Asia will change with time, but it is not unreasonable to think that this is the best they are going to get for now. This video is not wrong to say that these people get paid little. But the narrative is anti-nike (a company that sells useless products imo) when Nike is just supplying the demand. The only thing this video told me is that being a part of the poor class, in vast parts of Asia, sucks. In the west the poor class live better than kings of the olden days. Things do improve constantly.

Grizhlie You make a good point, however I think if enough of us boycott based on them not paying a living wage, eventually it will hurt them enough finacially to make changes. If we all just look the other way things will stay the same. Me boycotting alone won't be enough, we all have to be outraged. They have found a way to live the high life off of slave labor. It's not ok with me.

***** I'd have to agree. I changed my views on some of these matters after having had employed people myself. The business of business is not business, it's people. I rather do it in a way that is a win win for all as long as it scratches the realm of possibility. I'm sure doubling the wages of these people wouldn't bankrupt Nike...

As an Indonesian I can really relate to the workers in this documentary. Back in 2012 when I was just graduated from high school I got a retail job and paid equal to 100 USD a month. I live in Jakarta by the way which is the Capital City of Indonesia yet the minimum wage based on what the government made was very low. However today, in 2020 the minimun wage is raised equal to 300 USD a month so at least we can get a better living with that wage. Though I don't want to blame the government, I have to admit that our government is still corrupt, they actually have the power and authority to raise the workers' walfare by making a good deal and policy with every company or investor that will employ the workers, however the government always keeps our minimum wage that low considering as a developing country we need more and more companies or investors to provide us a job otherwise companies won't employ us and move to other countries with lower minimum wage, such a poor mind set while at the same time the government is still corrupt and they can live their best lives. It's so dilematic, where the companies need lower wage workers and the workers need a job while the government just done nothing. So I really appreciate this documentary, and I wish both for Nike or other company/ investor and our government can collaborate in making a good policy to raise the workers' wage. And today I really thank God, I finally just done my college degree and finally get a way better job with a better income but I would never forget my first job in 2012 where I was just paid 100 USD a month

You are right, these business giants are so greedy that they are even ready to let someone suffer for their own greediness. This world has now become blind to the greed of money. Especially countries that have high populations and a low GDP per capita. Yet there are still business giants like these that are stealing opportunities from people and creating an ocean of money, by avoiding taxes and snatching living needs from people. Money works like water, if there is a low quantity, then people get thirsty for more. However, if there is an ocean of money, then they drown from fear. I've decided from the start that I will not steal people's opportunities by becoming a businessman. With that high amount of money, they will keep some in storage and not use them at all. If they give away that money in storage, people will at least use it. Nevertheless, they keep it just to show-off how much money they have made by stealing rights from people.

We are not asking for them to be paid American wages. We want living wages, appropriate for their country. If they were paid this amount and Nike passed that cost on consumers, it would only increase the price of shoes by $5 per pair. That is IF Nike passed it along. They could easily absorb the cost and still make a very significant profit per pair. It is helpful if you do your homework before making posts that are not grounded in the facts. Peace, Jim Keady

@ they are paid £1.34 or $1.74 a day which is hardly anything to eat. Cups of coffee are more expensive than what they make. You have enough money to pay the luxuries we are fortunate enough to have, so you can't compare having basic human needs to asking for a raise
@micahdiazoni189
4 жыл бұрын
@ At least more people in America can work less harder than these people and can pay off for not only nike but other shoe brands later on. The fact that some consumers wont even buy nike shoes for 50 percent doesn't mean that nike will go bankrupt any time soon. They have made millions off of previous sneakers and endorsement deals. People in America tend to buy usually the cheapest item that has the best deal and saves the most money. Here, many people are trying to save money every day and it's not a choice. In America, five dollars is easy to earn compared to here where workers get paid as low as 50 cents an hour. Compared to America, workers there get as low as $7.25 cents an hour.
@micahdiazoni189
4 жыл бұрын
@ Regardless, people of all types, especially sneakerheads, will continue buying sneakers for either hype, collaborations, or because of endorsements and athletic signings. Of course, the majority of people in America would just buy shoes that are affordable. But what's your point? Workers here can have huge families and the system here isn't the same as in America. In Indonesia, 99 percent of the time you dont get a good future or education because you dont have enough money. It doesn't matter how smart you are. That has been going on in my ancestry many times. 1 more banana is like gold to families who are starving, sick, and tired. Unlike you people in America compared to here, living in luxury, taking pain medication at the lowest response of pain, and having the government help you out in everything especially if you are homeless. In Indonesia, there is still a huge gap between the poor and the rich. There is almost no such thing as "middle class." Why? Because it is still unfair in Indonesia. Suharto was a good president and was not a dictator as most American propaganda suppose. But ever since after, Indonesia has come from prosperity to struggling. Besides, what's you point here? People will still continually buy nikes, adidas, and vans as well as New Balance where not all materials come from America. There is no problem for a raise in 5 dollars. Something you could have more of in just an hour of working shift in America. In America, you are always cared for more than many other countries. So dont go around trying to save money on 5 dollars just so you could nitpick other brands with a 3 dollar better deal. I'd rather pay 5 dollars for a pair of shoes just to know that a kid is actually having a chance in life with a family getting paid a living wage. Did you not watch the video too? In only a month, HALF of the money they spend can go down. Leaving them in either debt or being homeless. If you want to save 5 dollars while having a kid getting a deadly illness in a dump, it's your opinion All I'm saying is that in America, saving is a big deal but here, it is life or death not only for one individual but for everybody as a whole. People are still going to buy nikes. Nike will still prosper. It doesn't matter if those so called "morons" keep buying shoes. Nike will still prosper. What's your selfish and privileged point about anyway?

@ THE COST OF LIVING IN OTHER COUNTRIES IS A LOT LOWER THAN IT IS IN THE US AND THERE IS TOO MUCH REGULATION OF LIVING QUARTERS IN THE US JUST BECAUSE THE US DOESN'T WANT ANYONE TO BE ABLE TO LIVE CHEAPLY IN A CITY WHILE OTHERS ARE PAYING AN ARM AND A LEG FOR RENT! SO THE WORKERS IN OTHER COUNTRIES CAN AFFORD TO TAKE LOWER PAYING JOBS BECAUSE THEY ARE ALLOWED TO LIVE OR SLEEP ALMOST ANYWHERE IN ALL SORTS OF CONDITIONS THAT WOULDN'T BE ALLOWED IN THE US WITHOUT PAYING MUCH IF ANYTHING, AND THE RENT IN GENERAL IS LOW. THERE ARE RENTALS IN AND AROUND BEIJING THAT ARE ONLY $100-200 USD A MONTH! PEOPLE IN THE US WOULD BE WILLING TO BE PAID AS LITTLE AS PEOPLE IN CHINA, BUT THE US HAS MADE IT SO THAT NO ONE HERE CAN AFFORD TO BE PAID SO LITTLE! THAT IS NOT OUR FAULT!

@ I live in Maryland and there is NOWHERE outside of cities where it is cheaper! I live 2 hours south of DC and 3 hours south of Baltimore and you have to drive at least 1.5 hours north of where I live just to leave the state, and yet it is STILL RIDICULOUSLY EXPENSIVE to live here! And somehow they still manage to blame it on being "CLOSE" to DC, when it is 2 HOURS AWAY AND YOU CANNOT COMMUTE THERE TO A JOB BECAUSE THE TRAFFIC IS RIDICULOUS! But those who have jobs in DC are now moving here because it's too expensive there, but they are taking their 6 figure salaries with them and just commute from here which drives up the costs around here even MORE! Because you as the little man are competing with people who can afford to pay $300k like it's nothing when compared to the ridiculous prices in DC! Meanwhile there are NO jobs around here that pay ANYTHING that are ever hiring, everything is either fast food or retail which only want to pay minimum wage in spite of how damn expensive it is! I have a bachelors degree but had to work at a thrift store because I couldn't get a decent job even after 2 years of networking and going to job fairs. You see what I mean? I desperately want to move to a cheaper state where there are at least decent jobs that pay a DECENT salary, but my mother in law doesn't want us to leave Maryland and my husband is reluctantly agreeing because she is a straight up b*** who gets her way about everything, yet won't even try to help us buy a house so we are not stuck in a crappy rental miles away from anything with 2 young children because it's all we can afford. My mom abandoned us years ago and my dad is in some halfway house somewhere so I have nothing and no one to lose if I leave, but since my husband's family is here I'm basically stuck. But even aside from that, YOU YOURSELF said that there are cheap areas in the US outside of cities, but as you have just seen that is NOT true in Maryland. So try again. And someone in China who gets paid $450 a month like they said they do, can of course afford a $100 a month place, so YES it IS cheaper in China which is why they can afford to be paid that little!

Total cost so far: 575,000 rupiah per month. You're left with 710,000 rupiah for 30 days, which is 23,666 rupiah per day. Chicken, rice, and vegetables: 9,000 rupiah for one meal. Ice tea: 2,000 rupiah. 2 bananas: 2,000 rupiah. Soap: 2,000 rupiah. Shampoo: 5,000 rupiah. Toothpaste: 2,000 rupiah. Total: 22,000 rupiah for one day, which leaves you with 1,666 rupiah. Let's say you want to eat a 2nd meal instead of getting soap, shampoo, and toothpaste. Then you'll be using all of your budget without any money left over for 2 children. Plus you have to fit your kids into a tiny room. Let's say you want to buy some clothes or some books for school. You can't because you don't have any money left over. I'm boycotting Nike.

It is my new belief that wages are a byproduct of supply and demand, but because people at the bottom are most vulnerable to being taken advantage of because they have few options, both basic wage and working condition regulations should be in place to ensure this doesn't happen.

Unfortunately people are stupid and lazy and have more kids than they should or wanna drink and do drugs or just don’t have ambition. If someone is working minimum wage and struggling to provide of take care of there family it’s almost entirely there fault. However, in these 3rd world countries don’t really have anything else so these billion dollar companies move in and take advantage. I love Nike and when I buy in Uk (home) I assume they're made in a western factory with decent wages and working standards. But after buying a pair over here in Indonesia and seeing this video, it's pretty shocking and I feel pretty bad! I've never seen this harsher side to Indo. either (currently in Bali having a lovely time) but the pay and conditions in this video are pretty awful. International world leading brands like Subway, McDonalds who operate a lot of 'front of house' work overseas (here for e.g.) seem to at least visibly maintain decent working environments around the world. They're all the same! but maybe because these factories go unseen it works differently. How much would it damage the company if they found away to pay these people more and give them a more decent life? Say, 50%, or 100% more p/m ($150 or $200 instead of $100) and treated them well, future prospects, and helping likely much more than just the employee but families, communities etc, would this be such painful blow to the company? You could rejuvenate and develop their area. I'm not too clued up on this stuff but it seems pretty tough. Go on Nike, help end poverty, JUST DO IT ! :-)

For every 10% rise in the minimum wage, about 3% unskilled unemployment results. I think the Indonesian government should heavily tax those corporates so that they can invest that money into the communities of people working in the factories.

Why would you blame Nike? If it wasn't for Nike what would these people do for work at all? I'm sure the CEO's of this particular company is sitting high, paying the workers nothing. If anyone found a product that could be made for $5 and sell for $100 every damn person on here complaining would be living the high life. Your lying if you say you wouldn't

There is no justification for the miserly salaries Nike pays its workers in Indonesia. I have recently visited Jakarta and a meal for a single adult at McDonald's is around Rp.30.000 which is way beyond the means of these exploited Nike workers. At least by not being able to eat this American 'junk' food, can can enjoy a healthier diet of rice and vegetable (if that's any consolation). Show some social responsibility, Nike! I would bet that your American expat managers in Jakarta probably pull in a salary of more than 50 million rupiah per month plus a free luxury mansion with multiple domestic worker and a Mercedes or BMW with a full-time driver thrown in. The have thrown out the Dutch colonialists only to be exploited by American capitalists! The only difference is that under the Americans the have the option of being exploited or not!

Unbelievable. I'm glad I don't wear Nike shoes anymore. I have a Nike backpack and duffle bag, but I only bought those because it's all I could get at the time and the best deal. When I need a new backpack, I'm not buying Nike.

I think that part of the reason that commenters say some of the awful things they do on these videos is cognitive dissonance and avoidance of responsibility. They are not necessarily bad people, it's just hard for us to accept that we contribute to a problem and have the power to do something about it. It's so much easier to say it's not our fault and someone else can deal with it.

Can't understand why so many professional sports people actually sign up and advertise their sweatshop products. Some in the tennis tournaments earn millions. Why would you sell yourself out? What little difference it make to their lifestyle and the dignity they would gain.

agreed, but it was not a soda it was a bottle of iced tea... and i believe, what he is trying to draw a correlation to, is the fact that the western world. Would live with these things on a day to day basis. These "people", would be the ones buying these products, that these workers produce. While we/i myself can sit there, taking things for granted such as buying a soft drink, or splashing out on a meal these people cannot. As for a massive companies data, and/or care for human condition...

Clearly someone didn't do the math. After all the basic needs and that one day of essentials a worker still has 689,000 rupia left over for the rest of the month, which would be 22,966.67 a day. This is enough to cover daily expenses. As for having money for their kids things like shampoo, toothpaste, and soap don't need to be bought daily, so the money spent on that could by food for their kids.
@citizenguy

Your math is wrong. He said the average wage is 1,285,000 rupiah per month. Rent: 200,000 rupiah per month. Drinking water: 25,000 rupiah per month. Transportation: 350,000 rupiah per month. Let's say you want to eat a 2nd meal or a 3rd meal, then you'll be using all of your money without any left over for 2 children. Plus you are still left in a single room to rent and have to cram those kids in there. Let's say you want to buy some clothes or some books for school. You don't have any money left over. I'm boycotting Nike.

There are two sides to the story of Western economic faction's relationship with the workers of Indonesia. Either such companies are helping impoverished people by providing them with jobs to feed themselves and their families or such practices are tantamount to exploitation and Indonesians are exploited because of their poverty which makes them vulnerable and some rather nefarious men in that country are paid very well to brutally repress Indonesians who unionize or oppose such practices. I wish Western journalist who are unbiased who will find out genuinely what Western economic faction's relationship is with the people of Indonesia and if this relationship ship is beneficial to such people or is just a form of exploitation which is dangerously close to slavery where to take advantage of a people's desperation and poverty and they are not fairly rewarded for the profits that their committed, cheap labor produces.
