She's saying that he fakes a smile all day with his white boss at work, so why can't she get that same smile instead of the anger and frustration. @@shanielswaby3591Baldwin was talking about needing to work to provide for his wife and kids (e.g., get paid so he can pay rent). he needs to smile at work - essentially appease his employers - in order to do this. but it’s a performance, a taxing one. but also, in his view, a necessary one so that he can continue being employed and provide for his family. hence why his smile is the price for the rent.

What did you hear her saying? Because it sounded very childlike and naive to me. Do you believe she’d be happy with her man getting fired because he stopped smiling at work so he could put on a performance for her? And her saying, he’s smart enough to figure something out sounds like she couldn’t put HER ego aside and understand the unrealistic nature of what she was asking for. Imagine a man that doesn’t make much money telling his woman that he wants her to stay at home and take care of the kids…and he’ll figure something out when it comes to the bills. Does that fly without him having a CONCRETE plan that she can understand? I doubt it. So her saying it without a similar plan shouldn’t fly either.

You are obviously correct. But, this leads me to wonder, as I see similar types of comments all the time... Why would one expect it couldn't be applied today? Or, somehow be surprised at how it can be applied today? Why do so many people find the sustained relevance even notable? Is it just that society's sense of progress is skewed by the world we see around us? Yes, we are surrounded by technological advances. Yes, everything has a different coating of paint and humans wear a different coating of clothes. Yes, the broken systems of past generations have grown into further broken systems. But, humanity does not evolve at this pace, many aspects don't change at all (or, at least they haven't yet). Perhaps people are so hopeful of leaving society's past behind, they don't realize we are merely continuing it... extending it.

I love this conversation and how they articulated themselves; artistic expression. It was dope hearing their vintage lingo lol; jiving, groovy cat, he's a "gas" 😏. But I also felt the pain in her expression and his; she wants him to pour into her even if he must fake it, and he wants her to understand why it's difficult. I understood both side's, what I will say is, if he can fake it at work for a paycheck it should be easy to smile and be loving at home - 'cause that's where the heart is...or should be. Giovanni expressed to Baldwin, how black women take on their spouse's frustrations and anger from work, when it should be love and happiness. Black men's rage from discrimination on the job transfers over into a beating up of the black woman, and sometimes in front of the kid's. It seems many men and women haven't been taught how to positively project their energy, due to childhood wounds, and social conditioning amongst other factors.

Ms. Giovanni and Mr.Haizlip for pushing black arts to what it is today and for what it will mean to the youth of future generations. In a time when mental health in the black community was non-existent or talked about I wonder if the viewers of this them knew that this was exactly what they were hearing in a honest, civil and unapologetic insightful conversation of the pivotal moment when feminism pointed out that Masculism not toxic masculinity was the issue as it was then and still is now. It’s so heartbreaking to hear a man say he can’t smile to the person who loves him the most. Because he’s been knowingly fake smiling for people who don’t love him. How don’t you understand the difference between the fake and the real. Feeding what feeds you.

Black Folk need to learn to be genially pleasant and not bring out the big watermelon smile everybody's come to expect. Who's asking him to grin all day at work? Just be pleasant and genial.

The synopsis of this conversation, for me, is stand up and make it happen. Powerful of a black woman to uphold and REMIND the black man.

But the question is: What does that mean/look like? Also, will she stay with him if it takes a long time to make it happen, and they’re struggling during that time? We need clear objectives and strategies, if we’re going to make progress. If you come to me and tell me you’re struggling and I say stand up and make it happen, have I helped you?

That was so profound when she "Lie to Lie". We live in a system where we perform as if on stage

I've been trying to understand why this moves the complete me (mind/body/spirit) so deeply. It's because she checkmated him. But she could only do so by respecting him utterly. "So one of the performances will stop". She knew he was intelligent enough to refute her request for the fake by saying he couldn't fake all day and all night. She trusted him to reach this intelligent conclusion. The respect between the two of them is palpable. "The rent will get paid. You are intelligent enough and sensitive enough.." this was a different kind of poetry.

Can we just marvel at the cinematography/camera work? They turned 2 (maybe 3) cameras into absolute gold with all the various angles and shots they were getting. Masterful.

Sadly the generation I’m in black men and women can’t find commend ground to have a conversation like this anymore. It’s always who bigger or better . Them men act like women and the women act like men .
@TheForkOnTheLeftist
Жыл бұрын
In what what did they find common ground? She's asking for something, he asked how she proposed it would work, and she gave an ambiguous answer that he didn't even reply to. Very confused how this was anything but a sign of what was about to happen to the community
@mariaSanchez-ub7ds
Жыл бұрын
@@TheForkOnTheLeftist it’s the fact that he’s listening… not talking over her , not interrupting her with aggressive masculine energy, but taking in everything she’s say’s instead of judging. Something a lot of men in todays age lack. The fact that’s he is hearing her out and excepting her point of views . As black women we tend to say how we feel but no one listens, or they say we are aggressive or demanding or angry.

@@mariaSanchez-ub7ds that's not common ground that's listening to a woman... Considering the changes in the community can you really blame men for not listening? Clearly it doesn't work

Matthew 6:25-33 New International Version (NIV) Do Not Worry 25 “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? 26 Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? 27 Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life[a]?

Years ago, I went on a second date at a bowling alley. At that time, my family was in crisis, and just as I greeted the girl, my younger brother called. I made it a habit to answer 100% of his calls because I wanted him to feel like no matter what there was one person in the world who’d always pick up, and he knew not to abuse that. However, that day he was extremely distressed due to our parents fighting, and the call took longer than expected. When I returned to the date, I was mentally distracted and apologized for not being fun. She comforted me, saying she'd enjoy our time together regardless, and urged me to just be myself. Her exact words were, "I want you to be wherever you are at the moment." That was when I realized this was my person. That was four years ago (we're engaged now). I can't tell you how nourishing it is to be real. I can't help but smile when I'm with her. She is my home. When I see her, the smile happens all on its own. It's not that I don't make an effort to be kind, but my feelings are real. She knows when I smile it's because of the joy she gives, and truly that’s nourishing for her as well. Work sucks, life sucks, but we take refuge in one another.

I love the way they hear each other and try to understand… no loud talking, no shaming, no antics. The podcasters today that focus on relationships need to take notes. There style makes my head hurt. here’s a better way to dialogue for greater unity and understanding between AA men and women.

If a man cannot be himself, his true self, with his wife, then who could he be true with?? This is the burden of the black man (man of color) in America.

@神 Seeking Techniques 神 That's a wrong assumption though. The assumption is that the black man cannot control his emotions and take it out on his wife and kids. That's not what James was speaking about at all!! What Mr. Baldwin was describing is the burden of the black man that puts his family first. The traumas he has to deal with in order to feed his family. No man should have to come home and not share with his wife what he's going thru. He should be able to get a shoulder to cry on from his wife, he should be able to express himself and his wife help heal his wounds knowing that he endures abuse in order to feed his family. A man needs to know that his wife understands him and has his back, that will motivate him to continue enduring knowing that his wife and kids understand. He'll do everything for his family
