That moment when you realize that after watching all these reviews, you can't afford any of these cameras, have no intention to buy them, nor any idea what half it is they're talking about... but you still watch them, anyway, for their excellent commentary and analysis, and their use of scenery and photography to demonstrate. Good on you, TheCameraStoreTV :D

Too many questions! I like the C100 for its size, but I'll be sticking with the FS700 for most shoots. RAW shooting on the Mark III is awesome, but it's a pretty painful workflow, certainly too slow for TCSTV videos. It seems quite safe though. As far as the 200-400, Nikon's design costs $6249, so the lens can be made less expensively than the Canon, however the word is that the Canon 200-400 is one of the sharpest zooms ever made. Hello, They needed to come under our permit as sponsors because they were making this commercial video for TCS. If you shoot in Banff and you weren't hired to do so (i.e.: a commissioned shoot) then you don't need a license. Even if you plan to put the photographs on the web later hoping to sell them you don't need a license. Recreational shooters don't need a license. So don't worry. Shoot as much as you want with no worries unless you're guaranteed to get paid for it. Brian Merry

This was filmed on the C100. I wanted a more discreet camera for shooting in the crowds at Lake Louise, which is why I didn't bring my usual Sony FS700. I liked the Canon, but I don't think we'll stop using the FS700 any time soon. Jordan @ The Camera Store TV

Jordan, thanks for such a great review. I have been looking for a longer telephoto lens with at least a 400mm reach. I have a Nikon D500/and 850 along with a Z6II and have started leaning towards more Z lenses but- they don't work with my F mounts so... I have decided to stay with F lenses that can be used with all 3 cameras-the Z with the adapter that works flawlessly on the Z6II. I did a serious look at the 100-500 since it has such great ratings- but I found that the barrel and the lens overall is just too big and seemed awkward to handle. I also really was impressed with the Z 100-400 but I wouldn't be able to use it on either the 500 or 850 and the $2600 price tag was a little beyond where I want to go. So, after watching your review- I am going to rent the 80-400 and really put it through its paces shooting orcas and eagles up in Victoria. Thanks again for the review.

I'm not sure what your experience is, but my impression has always been that wildlife in North America is far less evasive as animals in most parts of Europe. Staying in your car - at least over here in Europe - is almost a guarantee that you'll get much closer to the animal that you want to shoot. Sometimes this actually works so well that you have to back up again. Otherwise you can't frame the animal with your telephoto lens.

The D600 sensor should be the very same of the Sony A99 and the quality about on par with the D800. I think this is a good choice for the resolution is almost exactly the same of the Sony, around 24Mpx while D800 has 36Mpx, so it would have created a noticeable difference at 100% magnification, unless they resampled the images... thus voiding much of the affordability of the test :)

I completely agree on the 100-400, It was easily better than the Nikon 80-400 AF-D, and a very good lens on film and early digital, but I know when I got my 7D it lost its magic and spark.. I switched it out for a 70-200 f/4L IS and 1.4x TC and found the combo to be better optically (albeit a bit shorter) Heres hoping Canon gives us an update soon..

One issue I have seen posted before concerns the IS system debate between body or lens. Now the lens IS definitely works for the lens, but how much correction can the lens do if the camera body behind it is moved slightly. As with perhaps pushing the shutter a bit too hard. I have heard that the camera body IS (sensor shift) can deal with any variations from the body AND the lens.

Great review! As always. I'm already looking foreward to the next... But what's up with the exposure and color differences? I have never shot with a Sony, but is it much darker and more red than Nikon by "default", or did you underexpose/boost iso (hence the color cast) or something? And does the C100 really moire that much? I noticed Chris' shirt and zipper danced a bit. Thanks.

It's possible that the Active D-Lighting in the Nikon was working to lighten the shadows. I have Nikons and Sony's and it is accurate as to what would happen by default unless you preset the Sony to bias the exposure. Great location and great review and comparison on both lenses. But not sure what the value-added was on the hotel spooning scene. (?) What part did it play in the optics of these two great lenses?

I am also curious why they can sell a 70/400 for so much less then the new Canon 200/400 f4, is it really that much more money to make a lens if it's an f4 lens ?

With higher pixel 24Mpix or 36Mpix on Nikon every lens will give more detail than Canon 18Mpix or 22Mpix. This 80-400mm is sharper than 70-200mm VR II + 2x but in terms of class and sharpness. It is still below 70-200mm at 70-200mm focal range. If Canon have 24 Mpix sensor, 100-400 will give similar detail >95% than 80-400mm, Besides that, 100-400mm made of magnesium alloy, not plastic, but not weather sealed although still fine shooting under the light rain.

The A99 is only a runner up with people who are biased in the first place. Every time a dedicated canikon shooter does a head to head with ANY gear other than canikon gear they declare the canikon stuff the best, even if it isn't. The A99 matches up extremely well with nikcanon cameras nearly double it's price so don't feel bad.
