The reason for the difference between the names is that when Nikon introduced the Nikomat name, is was for cameras sold only in Japan. the Nikkormat name came about as Nikon thought that that name would be more familiar with people outside of Japan who were used to the Nikon brand. other than the difference in names the cameras, whatever model they might be, whether the El, or the FT, FT2 or FT3 etc are exactly the same cameras inside, regardless of which country they were sold in. and if you think they're fun as a vintage camera to use..wait till you get your hands on a nice Nikon F3 or F4E...shooting Nikon film cameras is a deep rabbit hole thats easy to fall into...lol..I know..it happened to me and I now shoot more with Nikon film cams than I do with my Nikon D2x. also, the EL is not a mechanical camera, it does have an electronically controlled shutter, and needs a battery to give you the full range of shutter speeds. it can shoot with a flat battery, and shoots at 1/90th sec, and you wont have any metering either.

Yeah the guy who sold it to me was a gem, great job refurbishing. I’m really pleased with it to be honest. Now I need to get a few other models and start comparing I think.

Also important when loading film is to set the ASA/ISO on the camera and wind the film to the first frame before you start shooting

Fun camera! I have my Dad's which he bought in '75 when I bought my F2 (which I still have in rotation.) This was one of the early cameras with an automatic setting, though it is also very versatile using manual settings. If it works, great! If it doesn't you are basically screwed because you can't find parts. That said, it takes all of the non-ai lenses and is a hell of a lot of fun to use!

If you pay more than $300 you could be ripped off (as you could be paying $30) but there is a growing collector community for vintage cameras and some are worth much more while not adding to functionality for someone wanting to use it regularly.

My friend has had his Nikkormat EL from new. It's pronounced Nick or mat unless you are from the wrong side of the pond. I have inherited a Nikkormat ft2 with a 50mm f1.4 ai s-c lens. I would recommend Portra 400 which has a huge latitude especially towards over exposure.

Film is rare. Got F75, but never shoot it) It support G lenses, but i bought it because of cheap 28-80 lens. I think, i never get my hands and shoot something.
