Great review that I totally agree with. In fact if you think about it a bit, you could argue having soft corners with slight vignetting is what you want wide open, because you're more likely to be shooting a subject you want to separate from the surrounding. You only really need sharp corners if you're doing landscape work, when you'll be stopped down anyway for the depth of field.

How did it fare for portrait photography? I am planning to buy it for my d5600, I have a kit lens along with a telephoto lens of 55-200. I was wondering if this will be a versatile addition to avoid a bulky travel bag. Any recommendations?
@lordwafflesthegreat

@@farisali8546 The 50mm f1.8 is essential to any and all Nikon owners. A must buy! It's great for portraits (70ish mm on APS-C) and lets in a lot of light for its price. Every photographer has to own a nifty-fifty for low light and portrait. That, and/or the 35mm f1.8. In my humble opinion, most people only need a 18-200mm superzoom for random photos and a 50mm for anything fancy. A two lens pack is perfect for traveling, just make sure you stock up on batteries! I wish I knew that before, now I mostly travel with a 18-55, 70-300 (kit lenses) and the 50mm. A bit bulky, but it's fine. Sometimes i only take the 50mm and my phone for wider daytime shots.

Nice review. But nobody mentions one problem with this lens and that is focus shift between f2 to f4. Mirrorless users will have no worries but on my D610 it is a problem. Live view is not always a solution in many situations. My micro adjustments are as follows: f1.8 -5 f2.2 -8 f2.8 -10 f3.2 -12 f4 -14 After f4 depth of field resolves the problem. Otherwise a sharp, light lens best at f 5.6

I had this lens before deciding to upgrade to Sigma's 50mm f/1.4 last year (based on your review). I always shot it at f/4 or f/5.6 and never really went brighter than that - simply due to never really feeling the need. Most of my photos with this lens are also cropped in somewhat or have out-of-focus backgrounds in the corners, so corner sharpness was never really an issue. And I was using the D7200, which is a DX camera as well. You can also pick this lens up used for a very good price. And someone almost always has it on sale, so you should never really be paying full price for this lens either.

I had that lens, but sold it for two reasons: 1) The bokeh was always a bit on the busy side for me, regardless of background, focus distance, aperture, ... 2) (and this is the main reason) the close focussing distance In the end I barely ever took it with me, despite it being small and light, because it just felt like it gave awful results. Not soft or anything, just "ugly" in a way. At some point I replaced it with the Tamron 45mm, which I absolutely love, apart from the relatively slow autofocus. It's about twice as expensive (and roughly twice the size and weight as well...), but has a much nicer bokeh and can be used for some pseudo-macro shots (30cm close focussing distance, I think it is - much better than the normal 45-50cm).

Dunno- there was an awful lot of purple fringing at 1.8 in the center. Might be the converter, though... ..Joe
@bharathghanta
4 жыл бұрын
The FTZ adapter doesn't have any glass. It just increases the flange distance and provides F mount contacts. Shouldn't have any affect on color fringing. Also you can see the D5600 tests in the video too which also show purple fringing.
@jagerardi
4 жыл бұрын
@@bharathghanta Of course it has everything to do with purple fringing, and I never mentioned a word about any glass in the converter. If the distance with the converter isn't perfect, then it could change the refractive index of the lens elements depending on the wavelength of light: i.e., different colors of the spectrum pass through the lenses at different speeds. THAT causes color fringing. THAT means that unless the converter is of a perfect length, it would indeed cause color fringing. It also support using glass on natively designed camera, and not adapt them to something they're not supposed to be used on. You need to read what I wrote, and not assume it's anything else. ..Joe
@bharathghanta
4 жыл бұрын
@@jagerardi No. Minor changes in flange focus distance doesn't affect color fringing. Use of different sensor filter stacks (when mounting leica m lenses on some modern digital cameras using adapters) or using optical(glass) adapters like FD-EF adapter (or focal reduces and teleconverts) etc. does but minor differences in 10ths of millimeters in flange focus distance shouldn't make any difference. You don't even need an adapter for this minor variation. Even native bodies aren't perfect. You would have minor body-to-body variation there too.
@jagerardi
4 жыл бұрын
@@bharathghanta Of course it does. Move the focal point of a lens, and the distance the colors travel with change aw well, causing fringing. Look at any refractor telescope- a doublet will have chromatic aberration because of the internal lens can't compensate for the wavelengths of light; a triplet will compensate, but if you move any of the lenses, you will disturb the lengths and have chromatic aberration. I'm an astronomer: we have to deal with this all the time. Now: have an adapter that isn't exactly the right length, and the same thing happens: the focal point of the light is not where it should be, and hence, the different colors of light are traveling at different speeds. If it's not spot on, the colors don't align. Blue is always the shortest, green in the middle, and red is the longest. If the focal plane is moved, it will be towards the blue (shorter) or red (longer.) That's a short explanation, without getting into the deep physics of it that I have neither the time, nor the inclination to teach. I was originally giving the lens the benefit of the doubt, but maybe it's just not a great design and suffers for that. Either way, I'm done. ..Joe
