I know late to this however just got into serious photography ( Wildlife & Birds in flight ) & just bought the Nikon D500 for that. Love your videos, very informative & well put together. Thank you, gave a big 👍 and you gained a new subscriber.

Great presentation thanks. I wrote this up which I am hoping people will find useful (copyright PGG): Nikon D850 Shooting Banks and Custom Settings Demystified. It took me ages to work all of this out so I am hoping my explanation below will be of value to D850 users as a one stop explanation of how this all works. Your NIKON D850 is able to be set up as if you had 4 camera bodies. Really? Yes, broadly speaking. When you receive your D850 you will note on the top screen that you are in Shooting Bank A (SHOOT A). Some will never move away from this (or maybe even notice this), using the camera more like a conventional point and shoot (generally speaking) reconfiguring the camera for each type of photo shoot. BUT, if you change to Shooting Bank B you can configure the camera differently to Shooting Bank A and the D850 will remember those settings, and similarly with C and D. You can even label them in settings (see Photo Shooting Menu). I configure A for Action, B for Scenery, C for Indoor Flash etc, you can configure and label them as you wish. If you turn on the Extended Photo Menu Banks* option this provides for a few more settings in each bank, most usefully adding exposure mode shutter speed and aperture. Given the depth of settings that can be configured for each type of photography this provides for a neat way of swapping your camera set up without having to remember your favoured settings for each type of photo. These can all be pre-configured at home. Once completed I would recommend saving the camera settings. One of the key reasons is that if you change any settings on the fly when out and about the D850 remembers your new settings and forgets the old. After a shoot you can just reload the saved settings. If you need to change your original template just reload, edit, and resave. * Yes, I agree, why not just include the extended photo bank options in with the standard ones? There aren’t many and they are pretty fundamental. Also simplifies things. So, to Custom Settings (see Custom Setting Menu). The big reveal! When you are using your D850 not only are you shooting Bank A, but also Custom Settings A. Now, Custom Settings are a set of even more in-depth settings for the camera but are not attached to the Shooting Banks. Many (including me) argue that Shooting Bank A should include the Extended Menu options AND the Custom Settings to provide for one contiguous user defined shooting mode, so old school U1, U2, U3… If you do not change anything in Custom Settings A then you can just use the Shooting Modes and move on. Again! Custom Settings are not connected to the Shooting Modes even though they are also labelled A through to D. So, any Custom Setting (A to D) can be used with any Shooting Mode (A to D). What many of us users appear to have done is set up Custom Settings A to D so they are an extension of the shooting modes A to D we set up so when we switch from Action shooting to Scenery to Indoor Flash, we switch both Shooting and Custom Modes at the same time so they match: A to A, B to B and so on. If set up in MyMenu switching both Shooting and Custom modes from A/A to B/B takes less than 3 seconds, really! Much quicker than reconfiguring the D850 on the fly. No doubt there was good reason for creating this flexibility of customisation but I was thoroughly confused by it at first. I hope this helps others to get more use out of their D850s.

Please cover more clearly the diff between shooting bank and extended bank. You said extended saves shutter speed, aperature, etc. But does it keep the same settings across all shooting banks or does it allow EACH bank to use its OWN selected shutter speed and aperature, etc. Not really clearly stated. Thanks.

Great video. Now, after you’ve set up your banks, how do you access one of the banks? Should I go into shooting mode and select the bank before shooting?

with Start Options can I indicate that each menu bank starts at a different time on one day? That would be great. Thanks

What is the difference of setting flash compensation on the flash shooting menu vs setting it on the flash? How would that affect bracketing?

Great Video. I have the Amazonbasics flash but my Nikon D500 doesn't recognize the flash on the menu bank (FLASH CONTROL) is it because is not a Nikon flash? I am getting banding on anything over 1/350 and someone suggested that I change your max flash shutter speed to one of the non-FP modes but I can't find how to change it can you help? Thanks.

Not all of us have the D500, maybe that is why! :-) The views will accumulate anyway over time.
