People go on and on about the Nikon F3, F4, F5, and the F100. I have the 3 and the 4 and about 5 other 35mm film cameras, but my all-time favorite 35mm film camera is the N90s/F90x. In a way, I'm glad they get so little love................you can buy them for $30 or $40 all day long.

This camera (aka F90X here in Canada) can be used in a form of 'manual' mode. By going to the P mode, then choosing Ps, and switching to Po mode, you get Aperture priority, though it will change the value if the screen goes to sleep, or if you turn the camera off and back on. I have a 1.4 G and when I turn it off/on, it comes back at 2.8, which isn't a big deal, just turn the wheel to choose your aperture again. To get to the 'manual' mode I mentioned, change to spot metering, and meter on a spot that gives you the shutter speed you want, then hold down the AE-L slider/button at the back, and that gives you your 'manual' settings. You can then recompose and press the shutter button once you have your focus where you want it. Other than it resetting after you release the shutter button, it works like a charm. So you can meter for shadows by using the spot metering, then recompose and shoot into the sun where your subject is backlit by the sun, and so on. Cheers.

you can shoot a G lens in program and shutter priority. My 105mm2.8 g VR works flawlessly and the auto focus is as fast as when it's on my D300s. Just no VR, which is fine.

I have a very strange autofocus problem on my F90x. It will not autofocus if I hold it in the regular horizontal way. If I turn it upside down it will autofocus great everytime. Also if I hold it normal (horiz.)then begin rotating it around the axis of the lens, it will autofocus at the same point or angle of rotation every time. The point where it starts AF is always about 20-30 deg. from being fully vertical. It will always AF if it is upside down. I have cleaned the lens connections and tried other lenses and still have the same problem. please help

+Michael Martin thank you! I used an epson V800, but I am not sure I ca recommend it. It's quite expensive and the quality is just ok. I made a video on scanners and this issue, but people were rude about it so I took it down. My favorite scanner is the Nikon coolscan V, but they are not made anymore. Still looking for a dedicated 35mm scanner that is as good or better then the Nikon.

Hi! I've just bought an n90s and all my D lenses work great with it. However, I also have the 80-200, the last version which has already an internal motor but which still maintains the aperture ring. And it doesn't autofocus. What can be the problem?

This is a film camera and shoots a normal or what you might now call a full frame of 35mm film. There are few exceptions to 35 mm film cameras not being full frame. Full frame is usually used to describe a digital camera sensor size, in reference to a standard 35mm frame in a still camera.

A Nikon D series 50mm f/1.4, or of you like wide angle D 28mm f/2.8. On a budget get the D 50mm. f/1.8. This camera was made for D series and S series lenses. Go with auto focus, but make sure the lens has an aperture ring. The camera won’t work well with the G series of lenses generally speaking.

I always leave my camera to rewind the film all the way back into the canister so I know what has been exposed and what has not. If you have a program in cord and the right software you can set it so that it does not go all the way back into the canister. If you need to get he film out of he canister once it is already in the canister you will need a film puller. I have one so that I don’t have to use a bottle opener to load my film in the tank. They make cheap ones for about 3-5 dollars, but you should get the nice one since the cheap one is very hard to use. There is an art to using the film puller and it takes time to get the hang of it. The older ones seem to work better too, not sure why?

Press the mode button and rotate the wheel on the right top back of the camera to manual or shutter priority as desired and then rotate the wheel again to change the shutter speed. Check your aperture ring to make sure it is either at your desired aperture in manual mode or rotated all the way to the right in shutter priority. You will get a Fee error in the led if it is wrong.
