Well spoken Matt. You know with the wildlife stuff I’ve been filming over the last weeks this grip would have helped tremendously. Shooting low to the ground with the grip up higher on a fluid head boom is going to be much easier. I’m looking forward to using this in the field. Sure I’ll use it elsewhere, like on my ronin, but this is even makes it easier to film with my robots. Just need a longer usb cable and remote monitor. It was good getting out on this shoot. Thanks for the burger Matt. 👍🏻

Thank you for this video and for your Nikon content in general🌻 I can’t find enough videos on KZitem regarding the Z6/7II for videography/cinematography (not for the Z system in general). Most of them are mainly old videos. That’s unfortunate cause there are plenty of videos for Fujifilm (XH2S) Sony (FX models) Canon (C70 R6II R5C etc…). I have the feeling that the Z6/7II are very capable cameras for videography-cinematography, that the Nikon Z system ergonomically is very comfortable and that the image quality is very nice. It’s just a feeling because I was not fully fulfilled with the Nikon KZitem content to get answers on many questions I have. And now with this remote control grip, I have a feeling that the Nikon Z ecosystem can be very handy for filmmaking. I wish Id see more hands-on reviews rather than just introducing it.

Hi Matt, this first effort seems fine! In the next version, I would like a combination of wired and wireless control so as to facilitate more variation in rigging possibilities for gimbals, steadies and jibs. The USB -C cable should be lockable or at least add some mechanism to secure it to the socket and finally I would like a teaming up with Tilta (like DJI has done) and now possibly SmallRig to be able to control their motors. One question: do the dials control the Hi-Res zoom as well as the control rings on Z lenses? The buttons for me are a no go but the control ring feels like it dampens the start and end points of the movement plus it gives a variable zoom rate! If it does then I shall definitely be adding it to my various Tilta remotes! 👍🏾🙏🏾

I received my Mc-N10 Remote Grip, via NPS priority order, on Dec. 23rd. It will be used with my Z9 bodies. As a Z9 shooter, I'm a little disappointed that it only has two function buttons on it, not the three front function buttons that my Z9 has. I'm going to have to rethink my function button programming. As for the batteries, Nikon needs to put the "Batteries Not Included" warning on this product. I wish it would have been made to use a battery like the EN-EL15b or some other longer lasting battery than a standard AA battery. It just means I will have to carry a lot of spare rechargeable AA batteries on remote shoots. One of my biggest gripes is that the USB-C cable that comes with it is way too short. The supplied cable is just under 24" long. It should have been no less than 1 meter (3 ft). I hate having to go out and buy a cable that should have been supplied, especially at the $430 price point Nikon US is charging for this. My other gripe is trying to figure out what adapters and third party parts are needed to mount it on my tripod's pan handle. You need to plan on spending an extra $100 or so for those parts. And lastly with the new Firmware ver 3.01 for the Z9, the MC-N10 is supposed to be able to control 2 Z9 bodies that are interconnected via the 10-pin ports on the cameras. The Nikon MC-23a cable is a 10-pin to 10-pin cable that you use to connect the two bodies. Again the Nikon cable is too short, only about 1 meter long, so you will also need a third party 10 ft extension cable. I plan to post my own video with details on all the things I mentioned, including a parts list for pieces needed to mount the MC-N10.

Great demonstration of a product that I had dismissed but has a lot of uses. If Nikon allowed with grip to swap out the standard batteries and plug in adapter for the current Z6 ,Z7,z9 users to accept nikon main camera batteries inside the grip. Bluetooth or any wireless be too much electronic interference and cancell each other out. Cable link Iis the best solution.

THIS was definitely made for a shoulder-rig setup. I'd buy one if and when I complete my rigs (Z6 & Z9) with shoulder mount pad and handles. Only issue would be I'd have to forego the V-mount battery to USB-C.

Great review, Matt. I love your channel. I really wanted one of these until I discovered it disables the "Direct Measurement" white balance feature on all Z bodies Z6-Z9. Nikon support advised me they may fix it if there's a demand for it from customers. I'm amazed this has not become an issue with the Nikon video community. I shoot mostly real estate videos, so I perform a direct measurement for white balance for the unique mixed light of each room. Disabling that feature when the MC-N10 is connected makes it unusable for me.

@@MattIrwinPhotography I would love to know if they changed it on the Z9. I know you can manually change the white balance. However, the Z cameras will not allow you to use the "Direct Measurement" feature to set the white balance using a reference card if anything (gimbal, Camranger, or MC-N10) is connected to the usb-c port of the body. I certainly hope Nikon changes this.

I use controls like this for my video cameras, and sadly Blackmagic Doesn't have it on their systems, annoys me when I use my BMPCC4K. I hope a Z6III or Z8 announces soon. then I'll move up from my D700 that I love. and be able to shoot stills then click to shoot video 24fps preferably at least prores. prores raw/BRAW or NRAW internally would be ideal.

I have had one of these on order since the announcement and I’m curious to see how it works out for video. As someone who owns Blackmagic cameras including a couple of Ursas, I’m not sure I want that many controls on the grip for a shoulder rig, and I will have to think about button mapping since I’m used to having the record button under my thumb. On sticks as you have demonstrated Matt, the grip looks more sensible but I’m not sure whether I will find it a helpful hybrid control or not. Time and testing will sort it out hopefully soon.

You say it's not about the buttons - that it is about not having to touch the camera and controlling the aiming of the camera with the handle on the video head. NO. For that price, it's all about the buttons. If the remote shutter release connection on the Z9 was the same as that on the Z6, D750, D5100, one could get by with a remote cable release in the $50 to $100 range - just use gaffer's tape to tape to the fluid head handle. It works very nicely. The whole point of spending that much money is to be able to manipulate the camera settings from the handle. And when I'm tracking a flock of waterfowl flying close by, I seriously doubt that I'm going to be futzing with camera settings. Even with a flock of snow geese on the far side of the Choptank River, I wouldn't be changing settings.

Several of the Nikon Z (internal) zoom lenses have electronic (not mechanical) zooming. So, presumably there could be a way to do that remotely. Could anyone confirm whether that's possible or coming soon... that is, is there a way to zoom the lens from say 70 to 200mm without grabbing the lens zoom ring?

..."feels right for the task at hand"... that is until you have a need for something ambidextrous/left-handed (disability here). It's a wonderful product to be sure, so it stings more it's wholly unusable for people with certain needs (we shouldn't always have to hope for adapted tech). It's telling that even makers of some wireless focus pull systems have made designs that are at least designed for ambidextrous use. The big camera manufacturers should get on board.

Batteries in that grip? Of course, yes. Cable connection? Of course, yes. Considering the grip drains two AA batteries in 12 hours, there's quite a considerable power consumption going on, still - it seems to me. As this thing is compatible with the Mk ii 6/7 too, and these have a lower battery voltage and energy reserve than the 9, not taxing the camera's battery is good. Especially from the point of view of a movie house that wants to run high-res high FPS movie (*). It means with or without the grip you maintain the same routine with the camera and the grip has its own routine. Bluetooth? It's an interesting way to "float" devices relative to each other electrically, but desirability depends on the robustness and stability of the associated driver layers - there's processing on either side. Looking at my stereo pair of Bluetooth loudspeakers and these every once or so often needing either my smartphone to restart its BT connection or be cold rebooted themselves, I would say this is not a good idea. The cable is just more robust. And, as Matt says, there's competition in the wireless space. And Nikon may want to reserve the camera's BT channel for other types of communication use cases. Beyond that, it's equal between BT and USB. What matters at the deeper level is how the "interrupts" are handled both in the camera's motherboard and electronics design, and in the interrupt-handling at the operating system level. When you press a button on the camera to (digitally, not optically) zoom, then this command is an interrupt and must be processed. If we can use a BT device to remotely control the camera, then we know that the BT chain has access to the same interrupt-handling chain as the physical knobs on the camera. The cable via USB must relay to the interrupt-handling too, but that may be more transparent, a shorter path with less latency, etc.. Most important to me in the "cable" decision is the robustness. Most important to me in the "battery" decision to me is the camera's battery life not being impacted. Note here that, with both higher V and higher mAh, the battery in the Z 9 has about double the (W = V * A -> m.W.h = V * m.A.h) energy of the battery in the 6/7 series. (*) "Movie" may be an Americanism (American in the sense of USA) in the UK and Aussie worlds, but "film" is really anachronistic considering its original meaning of "thin layer" and its reference to the old photographic (**) process. My own language has the problem too. As the wider English language worlds have the choice ... we can choose in a way that prevents the need for disambiguation in our communication. (**) As sensors - the individual photodiodes in the sensor - are analog, in digital photography we actually start with an analog recording too.

I was preparing for a video shoot and thought I might use the Z9 instead of my Blackmagic rig so I could work with the 50mm f1.2 and the really shallow depth of field. And I have the MC-N10 grip, and I have a ATMOS UltraSync Blue so I can use TC with my sound bag. Seems reasonable that I could work with all those things at once. But not so! If I plug in the grip, then the ATMOS menu area on the Z9 greys out and poof, timecode disconnects. Am I missing some buried setting, or is this just awful firmware getting in the way of my workflow? Hope you can help. Thank you.

Regarding video, there is one thing you don't mention that makes this Z9 camera unusable for video, and that is: the camera does not allow video recording on 2 cards at the same time, which is a shame, I don't know a single videographer who would want a camera that comes without this option.
@LastXwitness
Жыл бұрын
Sorry but I gotta jump in here. 1. High end arri red and others that are used when multi million dollar productions are on the line. are single card .. 2. Even if you record external like an atomos that’s single SSD. Which most cameras need to get full raw out of unlike the z9 which does it internal so it’s the same single card in most cases &3 any thing dual recording video internal isn’t giving you dual recording you’re getting a raw and a significantly lower resolution mp4 on the second file. This hasn’t been a deal breaker for video. And I’m sure some people might be like nah But that’s the reality of it. This camera is by no means perfect and no camera is for everyone but that’s a very blanket statement with misinformation

@@LastXwitness Nonsense in the juice, you change everything when you say huge productions of millions, we are talking about a camera for the middle class, not for cinematographic photography at the highest level, therefore it is a camera that is mainly known for photographing events, interviews, etc.. and if you are the same one who uses it otherwise it is not a problem Mine, this camera is meant to do something and it doesn't do it well at all, while I'll just say that in any other camera that even comes without dual CF/B memory slots, it does video on the 2 cards that are in the camera and that's Kane in Canon, Sony, Panasonic, and Fujifilm, So why the hell does Nikon not have this, and I of course talked to them about it as the owner of a photo news website in my country and they try to get away with saying that it's hard to do without the camera heating up etc.
