I found the following text regarding the Nikon rangefinder S-Mount which could explain what the "c" on your older lens in the video means. "Nikon made a small number of longer focal length lenses specifically designed to focus properly when mounted on a Contax. These were the 85mm, 105mm, and 135mm lenses. Each was marked with a "C" on the side of the lens barrel. This is not to be confused with a "C" mark used as a suffix to the serial number. Some early Nikkors used this mark to denote that the lenses were coated."

I bought a Nikon 135mm 3.5 Q in 2021 for £19 on ebay UK and when it arrived the correct lens hood was included (it was not pictured in the listing) , the lens has had a ai conversion at some time but not the nikon conversion kit but it operates great on my nikon dslr. I have found it to be a excellent lens.

Hey Brian! I just cleaned one Nikkor-Q Auto 135mm f:3.5. Regarding your dilemma about coatings I can confirm that this piece (with serial 921039) has coating. Some blue colored reflection from lens but also from rear element when taken out from body. This is same with all other lenses from same era and this type of construction. That is declared in available sources. All C type lenses are multi-coated.

I know this is a 3 year old video but believe it doesn't hurt to ask about another version of the Nikkor 135/2.8 for medium format Bronica systems. This lens jas a 82mm front ring and is naturally larger than its 35mm stablemate. It has a bad rap in the medium format society for being soft although is supposed to be really good for portraiture.

Thanks so much for this. I've been looking into the Sonnar design and didn't realize I have 2 of them: this one and the 105 2.5. I'm still working to understand the design but my wife will be thrilled that I don't have to buy another lens to shoot with a Sonnar. I heretically shoot with a Canon and a Fuji a lot these days but nothing beats the look, industrial design, and the feeling of a Nikkor lens in front of any srnsor. I'm shooting with the 135 today after watching your video. Mine is a Nikkor Q. I'm looking into the differences now. I'll check out your book. I have way too many Nikon bodies but love them all. Yes... Even the EM.

I need to buy a Sonnar design, because my 105mm f/2.5 is Gauss and my 135mm f/2.8 is a 4/4 design. I'll just go right ahead as I AM the wife. 😅❤

It's a wonderful lens! I use it a lot on my Fuji XT-2. Great for portraits and nature! Beautiful bokeh, especially with a little backlight.

This is often in my camera bag, love the way it renders textures. I have the q. I've been tempted to pick up a rf version, not that I need another 135.

I scored a Nippon Kogaku Nikkor Q 135/3.5 with hood, caps & ai'd for $40. Bonus is that the hood will fit my 105/2.5 Sonnar as well.

The Contax 135 f4 for their rangefinders were also Sonar lenses.

I Beg To Differ - I have the Nikkor QC 135mm F3.5 lens WITH Chrome Frontal Ring, and it has been AI converted, and I found this lens very sharp than the 135mm F2.8 Nikkor. Maybe your lens needed work, and CLA Maybe? But my lens is Sharp, as it was my portrait lens during when I was in Art School, and also use it when I went on Traveling to Japan, Denmark, and France...

It was my understanding that the "Q" designates 4 lens elements. "Q" meaning quattro or four. A "P" designation would mean the lens has five elements, or penta. And onward....... Nikon was known back then to put the element count on the lens. With the poor coatings of the era, it was a compromise between having more elements to get rid of aberrations, and fewer elements to cut down on lens flare and the inherent loss of contrast and resolution. The "C" is the only reference to coatings on those lenses. I owned both versions of the 105 f/2.5 lenses and preferred the sonnar one. I always thought the f/3.5 speed of the 135mm was to slow for any kind of portrait photography. To much depth of field. Maybe I'm a snob!

Hello. Great review. I found the Nippon Kogaku nikkor-Q auto 13.5cm f3.5 version . It's the earliest version of nikon 135mm f3.5 as i know . Is this lens also a sonnar version ? And is there any optical advantage in sonnar design lenses over other lenses ? Thanks.

I believe your lens shares the same Sonnar optical formula as later versions. As to advantages, that is entirely subjective. Personally, I like the Sonnar look and so do many other people.

I think Zeiss were the first company to use multi coating and the first Japanese manufacturer may have been Asahi Pentax, around 1970. I stand to be corrected, of course.

I have a 135mm 3.5 tick mark lens that came with an early model Nikon F. It barely fits on the mounts of any other Nikon, it's too tight. The front element is a bit hazy, but I'm excited to shoot with it once I get a focusing screen for the F that doesn't have such awful blackout... The A screen is truly awful. Anyway. Not that you need to, but rare ish tick mark lenses and the early F stuff would make an interesting video, don't know that anyone else has done it.

Tick mark lenses sell for an insane markup due to collector interest. Other than historical significance, the tick marks don't add value optically.

@@BriansPhotoShow oh man, I didn't even know they had such a mark up! Looks like I can make back some money beoffr the market crash with this thing... Thanks for the heads up.
