Hey Ken, thanks for checking out the video and for the comment. I have the old Tamron 35-150 f2.8-4 for the F mount. It’s a great lens and I sure the newer version is awesome from all accounts. Tamron is making some solid lenses of late. Enjoy your search for a super telephoto.

Thanks for the videos on this lens. There aren't many that are featuring Nikon bodies so it's nice to see how it works on the Z mount. I'm debating between the Nikon 100-400, 180-600, and this lens. It seems quite versatile and a great value. The 180-600 is too big for my taste, and the 100-400 is a bit too short in terms of focal length, and too pricey. So the Tamron is shaping up to be a great middle ground option.

Hey Nick - thanks for checking out the video and taking the time to comment. I think you’re coming at it from where I am. Unzoomed the Tamron is similar in size to the 70-200 f2.8 though a bit heavier. It fits easily in my peak design 6L v2 sling so I dont have any real excuses not to take it out. The 180-600 is a hefty unit size wise and would not be used as much because of that. The Z 100-400 is twice the price but shorter reach. The Nikons do take teleconverters but I’ve tried teleconverters from 3 systems and have been disappointed in the acuity every time. Otherwise I think the VR is likely noticeably better on the Nikons based on reviews I have seen. But all told, for the money the Tamron is a great lens and it’s quickly becoming one of my favorites. Good luck!

Also remember that the Sony version of this lens had a software update to address Vr so Nikon version may well get one in the future

Hey thanks for the review. Any thoughts on the sharpness of the lens?
@jonneave

Thanks for watching the video and taking the time to comment Dex. I haven’t done extensive testing specifically on the sharpness of the lens but having taken many thousands of images with the lens, I dont think that sharpness is really an issue. I dont think it’s as sharp as some of my lenses but it’s far from a poor performer for most real world use cases. Thanks again.

Thank you for your video. I had tried a rental Tamron Z 150-500 on our Z9. However, I decided to go with the Nikkor 180-600 mm f/5.6-6.3. Sadly, I am second guessing myself now because I haven't had any shots that I thought were worthwhile. Of course Nikon, recommended a "power cycle" and the cleaning of terminals. I have only had the lens for five days and two of those days have been on the phone with Nikon and Adobe. The Nikon lens seems lighter and better balanced. However, the Tamron results were much better than what I have seen from the Nikkor 180-600 so far.

Hey John. Thanks for checking out the video. I’ve not used the 180-600 but it doesn’t sound like it’s operating correctly. I’d be very surprised if there was much between the Tamron and the Nikon in regular shooting. If you can return the lens, I’d swap it for another copy. All the reviews of the 180-600 are very positive so yours sounds like a lemon. Best of luck.

No problem at all. Please let me know how things turn out. These are all very nice lenses for their price points. I can’t imagine I’d be unhappy with either of them. It’s just a question of priority of function, price and size that should drive the choice. There likely won’t be much in the image quality without some degree of pixel peeping.

I ordered one of these and when it came in to my local camera store, I took my Z8 in to check it out. When I mounted it on my Z8, it had a LOT of play in it. I told them to keep that one and order me a new one. Hopefully, the new one will fit better.
@jonneave

Hey thanks for taking the time to comment. I found there was more play between the lens and the camera body than all other Z mount lenses I’ve used. I tried it on a few different camera bodies including a Z6 and ZFC and found the same thing. I wouldn’t call the amount of play I experienced concerning but it’s there nonetheless. It’s sufficiently notable that I’ve included the point in a video I’ll be releasing in the next week or so. Thanks again and good luck with the new lens.

@@jonneave thank you for your reply. The amount of play on the one that came in was a LOT. If there is a similar problem with the replacement, I will likely just upgrade to the Nikkor Z 100-400S. Did the play affect the performance (AF precision, Sharpness etc) as far as you could tell?
@jonneave

Hey @R.Hogarth. I’d guess, subjectively, the lens rotates maybe a degree or so on my Z bodies. It’s definitively more than my other lenses but since I noticed it in my first week or so with the lens it hasn’t really bothered me. As for the performance of the lens, my copy seems good despite the play in the mount. Hopefully the next copy you get is better as I think the lens is great for the money. Best.

Similar situation with my copy - definitely a noticeable mechanical play on the mount, so probably not a copy variation but a design quirk. Doesn't seem to affect image quality / AF accuracy though, so... I guess it's just what it is.

It even works rather fine with a lowly Z5 - in fact, I prefer it to the (adapted) Nikon 70-300 AF-P. Very good AF performance, and if it's heavier and a tiny bit darker... who even cares? Shooting RAW with auto ISO and taking into account the Denoise AI capability of Lightroom... it's a superb "value for money" lens.
@jonneave

Ive never shot the 70-300 AF-P but I understand it’s pretty compact, good value and nicely sharp. Do you have any thoughts on the sharpness at focal lengths that overlap with the 150-500?
@mjak993
5 ай бұрын
@@jonneave the 70-300 is sharp up to 200, 250ish, but can't match the 150-500 at its longest end. Also, I think the background blur quality of the 150-500 (slightly darker it may be) far outplays the 70-300. The 70-300 AF-P is OK for a cheap(er) DSLR lens (I would be happy with it on a used D500 for example), but I don't think it can touch the 150-500. EDIT: I mean, I have the 70-300 AF-P and I'm selling it, because it's just not as good. Lighter, sure (significantly so, even), but the image quality is just... okay. I am keeping the heavier 150-500 instead.

Thanks for the info mjak. As another data point, I have the 50-250 for my Z50. I really the like the size and reach on the DX body and its reasonably sharp. But again the Tamron is noticeably sharper which I guess it ought to be given the price differential. Great to have options!
@bennyboytwin

I’ve been looking at this for my Z50 as it’s considerably cheaper than the Z100-400, corner sharpness isn’t an issue on the Z50 due to the crop factor, but would you say the image quality is good on the Z50.
@mjak993

@@bennyboytwinI 'm happy with it on a Z5. I don't know how it would work the IBIS-less Z50... probably rather OK, but I have not tested that combo. EDIT: regarding center shapness, I can't see any problems.

Hey Martin, thanks for checking out the video and for taking the time to comment. I’m sure the Z8 has better AF overall than the Z6 I or II, though I’ve used the lens on my ZFc and it worked well. The focusing processes on the ZFc qre very similar to the other non flagship camera bodies and it’s important to choose the appropriate focus mode for the intended subject. I often used wide area Large as it directs the camera to focus on just a small part of the frame. What type of subjects are you shooting and what focus modes are you using? Thanks again.
