Good, comprehensive review. I took the hot shot cover from my old D50, and I'm using it on my new Z50. One less worry in inclement weather. I heard that the pop-up flash was responsible for most of the weather seal difference from the Z6/Z7. (The seal on the kit lenses, of course, could be less, as well.)

my thoughts on the z50, coming from a D5100 owner with the usual lenses. my D5100 cost me £150 4-5 years ago, as new condition secondhand very low shutter count. the z50 is about £900 in the UK. whats the difference in actual image quality? close to none i would say. yes for video its vastly better no doubt, but if yr primarily stills and you have a D5100 or similar family DSLR, as fantastic as the z50 looks (and i would love one), it makes little financial sense. kudos to you ken good to see you on youtube. yr original D40 review made me buy the D40 and get into DSLRs.

i also have a d5x00 and i'm attracted to the z50. while the image quality might not be drastically different, the main draw for me is significant focusing improvements - hitting perfect focus is more important than minor sensor differences. you're right though that nikon F mount is sooo much cheaper 2nd hand though, the value for money is insane. so i'm waiting for it to come down in price a bit and lens pool to grow

If I may say....in the utilitarian aspect of this camera in the crop sensor market this rivals Olympus E-M1 II. The Lumix G9 is a beast for M43 and reminded me more of the D7200 I shot with. I love Olympus E-M5 & 10 for the aesthetics and for me the overall experience has been great. My cargo pants and/or rain jacket is my camera bag because of such small lenses. With that said, when I first saw the z50, I got a bit excited and frankly they nailed it way better than the Canon M-5 and 50.

Hello Ken.. I’m a commercial photographer in Venezuela specialized on Product, Food, Architecture and Portraits and my only camera is a D200 (bought it when it was released from Nikon and never serviced) and my workhorse lens is a 17-55mm f.2 DX lens, plus the 105mm f.2 Micro and a sigma 10-20mm. I’ve planing to get the Z6 and the 24-70mm 2.8 but that is an investment of 4000 USD and that’s too much for me cause due to the economical restrictions of Venezuela it is not easy to charge lots of money to my customers so that I’m able to get much more expensive equipment.. Having said that… when the Z50 came out I said to myself THIS IS THE ONE before my D200 dies on me in a photo shoot. Jumping from a D200 to a Z50 I feel like I’m getting a HUGE UPGRADE in terms of technical specs and capabilities that I can’t achieve today with my D200. Some people always say that the D200 was an amateur camera and they say the same about the Z50 and as I always say… A professional photographer is because of his abilities and techniques instead of the price of the equipment they use. So I want to know your thoughts about me jumping to the Z50 from a D200 camera and using my 17-55 with the FTZ adapter and also I wish you can do a review of Z Full frame lenses using the Z50 despite the obvious crop factor but I think the images of Z full frame lenses on a Z50 are way more sharper edge to edge due to the size of sensor.
@KenRockwellTV

Hi! Full frame Z lenses have extraordinary optics. Look great on DX z. Z50 has no magic sensor cleaner, unsure if you shoot at f/32 in studio as I do with macro lens if that will become a problem over time for you. I use my d3 in studio and I have to spot out dust in most shots. Otherwise I love Z50, can’t vouch for how well any particular lens will adapt. As I’ve shown the two plastic fantastic 16-50 and 50-250 lenses are great and might replace lots of other lenses for you. Your micro Nikkor ought to work fantastically (but the af and afd versions won’t autofocus on FTZ, only the VR version will AF on FTZ)

@KenRockwellTV

These are JPGs straight from the camera, no additional tweaking after I pressed the shutter. I add the +3 to saturation in the camera’s Picture Controls setting so the camera adds the saturation before it saves it all to the card. I use +3 because that’s what makes the pictures look the way I want them. Thanks for asking!
@ronspi

@@KenRockwellTV I understand what you wrote. At the end of the day, it is your camera, you can set it up the way you believe your images look better. I believe you know exactly what I was referring to. Straight out of the camera means - for the others who read this - literally, whatever the camera captured without any in-camera settings that modify reality. Anything other than focus/miss-focus means altering the image. I wish you posted images showing what the sensor "sees", not what you want the image to look like; that you can (should) do in post, as some images are already very saturated depending on conditions around you when you take the pictures. At the end of the day, again, it is your decision, but it was nice you consented that you added 30% saturation in-camera settings.

Night and day. All depends on what’s important to you. I prefer the way the Z50’s images look hands down. Also prefer the Z50’s handling. XT3 colors too soft for me; Fujis are in permanent portrait mode and I mostly photograph things rather than people. XT3 specs look better on paper, with a second card slot and macho man metal body, but I’d buy a Z50 but not an XT3 - but we all have different preferences. What’s important to you? XT3 feels tougher in hand, but Z50 takes better pictures for my tastes.

I saw on your site that you prefer the Z50 to the new Z FC. The big advantage I see at the Z FC are the easy access manual controls on the top of the camera (speed, aperture, etc.). Is this something that you are missing in the Z50? And if not, how do you go around it? Perhaps I should review my photography style and techniques, but for now a flash is not something I use (mostly travel photography in sunny countries).

As I said, it comes down to do you want a flash and which controls do you prefer? Ultimately I prefer Z50; what look like pretty direct controls of the Z fc don’t reach all shutter speeds so they’re not as useful as you’d expect. Good news is we now have two choices. Thanks!

Ken, I am a longtime reader. Never seen one of your videos before. I like how you handle yourself in the comments; you sure keep it classy. I know you often talk about your choice of camera being almost irrelevant and the accuracy of the "megapixel myth" but I still can't understand those things. I have owned a D90 since new and I have never been satisfied with the image quality. I have shot with tripods and various lenses at all apertures and I have always felt like my pictures turn out fuzzy. I should also mention I have been recently shooting with manual ISO always under 400 and I get the same results. I'm always floored looking at pictures taken on cameras like those from the D8xx series and the new Z50 and how incredibly sharp they look even blown up. I have even considered buying something like a D100 or D2 just so I can say the low pixel count is part of the charm. Are there any tests you'd recommend I do to confirm my problem is not the camera body? I doubt its the equipment, but I don't know what else I can do as a photographer to shoot sharper.

I've owned a D700 since almost it's release. I jumped up to that from a D90 almost immediately cuz "everyone" was Fullframe!Fullframe! I do shoot most of my photos in severe low light, and have gotten by, sheer luck, and as wide an aperture as I can go. I am using a 13 year old camera, and I think it still holds up pretty well, but I've had my eyes on some newer cameras. I've watched both your videos on z5 and z50 now, and both are great, and seem like great cameras. It just seems that the tech has come so far now, that my thoughts of fstop/iso/everything is a bit dated and it's hard to compare new cameras to my current situation. The price difference between the z50 and z5, are not terribly too far apart either. Has camera tech just gotten so good now, that even the cheaper/crop/entry level cameras can produce almost what everyone would want? I'm willing to pay a few hundred more, for a much better camera, but it seems the z50 really isn't that far away from the z5 aside the full frame. Hope you can help with some insight.

Your lenses may or may not work (see www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/mirrorless/lenses/ftz.htm) and the adapter is expensive, and if it does work it will be much bigger than just buying a new Z lens. Honestly I’m not impressed with the Z system; personally I much prefer the Canon Mirrorless system www.kenrockwell.com/canon/eos-r/index.htm

How do you track focus when using D5600 for kids or sports? You're saying you can AF very well in those situations with DSLR cameras but I can't seem to follow any subject with any settings. Neither Contiunous Focusing nor 3D or any other combination. To me it has been useless and that's why I deciced to buy a mirrorless camera. I'm wating for my Z50 to arrive and I watched your review and find that DSLR cameras focus way faster than the Z50 even with eye detection on. Is that so? Also, I'm highly surprised that you're saying the battery lasts very long. Is that really true?
@KenRockwellTV
3 жыл бұрын
Hi! See this for af help www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/d5100/af-settings.htm, under moving subjects. My Z50 was awful for tracking action, no big deal, return it if you hate it. For sports and moving subjects, AF-A and Auto Area as set by default usually work, but if I'm going to be shooting sports all day, I'll set it to AF-C and 3D-tracking. This lets the D5600 track action as it moves around the frame and towards and away from the camera! Select an appropriate AF area with the control on the back of the D5600 to select your subject, then as you keep the shutter button pressed halfway and keep shooting, the D5100 will keep that subject in focus as it moves all around the frame!

Everyone just wants to buy a "fancy" Sony or Fuji camera because they are totally hyped by the influencers. Fuji's autofocus is just super slow compared to the others. Nobody tells you that some of the Sony menu is really bad. And instead of maintaining its cameras, Sony keeps bringing out new models. The A6400 was already totally outdated when it was released and the A6600 costs as much as a Sony full frame camera. That just makes absolutely no sense. The Z50 is a really underrated camera and the Nikon menu is super user-friendly!

Great review. I noticed that you haven't discussed the focus peaking feature added to these new Z series for Nikons to which we can only get this from a mirrorless. I hated manual focus for manual lenses and w/ this feature, it was such breeze. And the eye auto focus, we know its not stellar compared to other brands, but this one of the reasons why i switched to mirrorless especially im more into portrait photography. Looking forward for more of your reviews. I'm an avid fan with your website and I always visit it for comparison before buying my lenses and cameras. Well done and more power to this channel. I don’t always agree with Ken but absolutely agree with him here. He covers the Z50 well. I own this camera after trying the A6600 & A7iii. Is it’s AF as good as the Sony? Not quite but it’s really close & plenty good. I considered the Z6 & Z6ii but don’t need them for what I want. The Z50 and the small kit lens take amazing shots. He is 100% right about the flash and it covers the slow kit lens indoors. One hand use is easy. I also don’t want to use XQD. I did that with a D500 & prefer single card/import/edit flow. The metering of the Z50 reminds me of my D7500 in that it’s excellent at getting the image right. It also has highlight weighted metering so you can have fun with light/shadows & B&W if you like. This camera is fighting by X100V for what I grab when I leave the house. It’s THE BEST bargain in mirrorless right now IMO. Will I get a Z6ii? Maybe... but I’m in no hurry as the Z50 does pretty much all I need.

Z50 has the same level of weather shielding as D7500, Nikon says. It happens that I've tested D7500 regarding this, once I've slipped down a small hill, which was wet after recent rain. The camera never fell down, but I "scooped up" quite an amount of dirt with my new shiny (back then) D7500. That felt awful, really. BUT i just turned the camera off, took the battery away from it and then, when I've got home, I washed my D7500 under a small trickle of water running from my tap tube. I cleaned every bit of dirt, then let the camera dry for like 2 hours and then turned it on. It served me god for 2 years after that, till I've sold it after getting Z50. So is Z50 has the same level of protection, it's perfectly OK.

The z50 with a 16-50 in your pocket sure beats your 750 with 24-120 f4 in the bag at home. I have owned full frame and aps-c for years. In my busy life, I find myself taking my z50 out a lot more. I think the z50 is a hit. I agree/disagree on adapting lenses. I adapt prime lenses like 35/50 i.8s and the 60/105 micro lenses. The new 50-250 is very sharp as well. Don't sleep on taking outdoor portraits with the 50-250 either. The FTZ partially defeats the upside (compactness) of this camera system (especially zooms), but does open up a way to transition from F mount to Z mount users.

That said, I don't understand statements such as "vivid accurate colors" shot at max settings like plus 3 saturation (I realize this is the way you like to shoot, but it's not the way my eye "accurately" views the landscape or wildlife) and when speaking about the two lenses for the Z50 you say that the VR is so good "I can shoot these lenses down so slow I haven't even tested them yet!". Huh? Keep doing your reviews but like mixed metaphors some of the language has me scratching my head and replaying the audio.

@KenRockwellTV
4 жыл бұрын
Simple: with dslr the specialized af sensors are exposed directly to the lens image and act on it in real time. With Mirrorless the af sensors are on the image sensor, and have to be read only a limited number of times per second so there is always a delay. The state of the art is Sony A9, and only that reads at 60 times per second - far worse than real time. Thanks.

@@alexchrist4342 This is just my opinion of course. For me the D7500 would be a downgrade from the D5500. Much heavier, bigger, but same photo quality. For me the key to enjoying the D5500 was the wonderful light weight and ease of handling and use. The Z 50 has that same feel as the D5500. The D7500 much bigger and heavier than either. Z 50 has an EVF plus eye auto focus and so on. But both D7500 and Z50 are very good cameras. Likely you will not be sorry with either.

Z50 is relatively inexpensive but from your review and Tony Northrup's review appears to be a major disappointment. Auto tracking and in camera stabilization are absolute musts for any family camera in today digital/mirrorless world. Unfortunately, Sony is still the best, if not only, choice for the armature family camera. I have used Nikon for 50 years. I hate to have to switch loyalty. But, I want a new mirrorless... How about a comparison of the leading mirrorless cameras by two or three manufacturers... Your review appears to give this camera a better rating than it deserves.

I had 2 problems with the phone (Pixel 4) only - you could hardly see the screen in bright sunlight and the pinch to zoom is still a bit fiddly after all these years.
