Another really good video, Mike. I find the learning curve for the Z cameras is more difficult because users do need to change habits and optimize the camera settings for best results. In addition, some settings preferred on a D850 are no longer the preferred setting on a Z camera. This is part of what throws occasional users who assume they can just pick up the camera and have it work like a five year old DSLR. My specialty is nature photography so my customizations are different. For example, I program the Fn1 button to Zoom to 50% on the Z7ii and 100% on the Z6ii. This lets me zoom in to identify a subject or watch for precise details like head position or field marks with a small mammal or bird. I also use the magnified Fn1 button in place of binoculars when combining birding with photography. It also allows me to zoom and check the image on playback. My Fn2 button is the default - the AF modes you referenced - for the same reason - to quickly make changes through the EVF. My Movie record button for stills is set for Exposure Delay Mode because I often use Exposure Delay with landscapes and occasionally need to make a quick adjustment without time to go into My Menu.

Hi Eric, thanks so much for your comment and kind words. Your feedback and experience with bird photography is really interesting to me so hear how different people utilize the different functions as per their needs. That's why I'm a big believer of never saying what people should or shouldn't do, but rather what works best for me as a portrait shooter, knowing full well that my info may not work for something shooting other types of photography. I also totally agree with what you're saying. I'm a creature of habit, so it's tough for me to get over a style of shooting that worked so well for me with the D750. But this new way of shooting AF-C with Eye/Face AF has yielded so many more keepers, that's it's definitely beneficial. Just hard to teach this old doing new tricks. :) Thanks again for your comment and info, and thanks for watching!

Also Mike to make it a little more efficient, you can switch the AF-S, AF-C, M to the front sub command dial and then the modes Auto area, single point etc to the command dial in the back - I find that this is a little more ergonomic as one tends to move the modes more than the AF-S and AF-C and the back dial is easier to turn while holding down the record button. The way to switch is: go to the custom menu then f5 Custom command dials then push the d pad to the right then select Change main/sub and push the d pad to the right again then select Autofocus setting On. Once you do this the two command dials will be swapped and you can move your modes while holding the record button with your thumb - much easier to do :)

Hi Mike ... thanks for the setting tips and your rationale. So I can understand whether I want it that way or not. Would it be possible when creating the videos to mention the firmware version, which is current there? In my Z6II, firmware 1.50 there are additional settings, e.g. "Portrait impression balance", in the Photo Shooting Menu. It is also possible that menu items are omitted with higher firmware versions. This could be a bit confusing. Thanks a lot

With the Z6ii, the PocketWizard TT1's need to be updated with the new e-release firmware in order to work with the Z6ii. It's not just a firmware update, it's the e-release version where you need to pay for the updated firmware per TT1. I don't believe the Plus 2's are compatible at all and those would need to be replaced. The Plus X is what I call a "dummy popper" since it's a single pin, and it will work, but the Plus 3's also require a firmware update. I believe Pocketwizard may launch a program to mail back Plus 3's back to them for a e-release replacement, but I'm not sure if they have implemented this yet. I would reach out to pocket wizard support as they have fantastic support via email, etc. I hope this info helps.

So... I have a question about vibration reduction, I'm shooting using my "old" DSLR lenses on a Z6 using the FTZ adapter. In the menus when I was setting up with your fantastic video, I noticed that the vibration reduction was not a selectable option, but these lenses are all VR lenses. Does that mean the camera itself will not assist with VR, and it's just a matter of flipping the switch on the lens? Looks like there re some options regarding this that I don''t fully understand.

You may already know this but the picture control has no affect on raw images only on how they appear in the playback picture and in JPEG files. The picture control, from what I have read, is cooked into the JPEG file.

Thanks Mark. Yes, this is all very true. No effect on RAW images at all. I probably worded something wrong in the video, but I use this mode so when I shoot with clients, especially for outdoor headshots and such, it helps to let them preview the back of the camera to "soft proof" what we're shooting in the moment, so that images look ideal. Hope this makes sense

Hi! Just got my Z6 ii with firmware 1.30 (haven't updated to 1.50 yet). I found this video and started watching it. Starting around 7:14 you display what I believe is your viewfinder. I stopped watching as I can't seem to find how to get the data arranged on the sides as you show it. This video is a year old, so maybe firmware changed it? I think the same data is displayed on my screen but across top and bottom. Frankly, I like your arrangement better (less congested). It will slow me down at least in the beginning but thought I'd mention it in case I missed something somewhere. Thanks for the video. I see most all reviews state the Canon cameras (which I am also considering in the r6ii) focus much faster. I only shoot senior portraits, families, and weddings. Will the Z6ii focus system be sufficient for those types of photography? I am leaning towards Nikon mirrorless as I know the menu system and I like the reviews of the Z 1.8 lenses. A question for my fellow Nikon Z6II user on exposure preview (D9 on the menu) in manual mode: I'm just wondering is it possible to keep it when I'm using flash or if the trigger is connected? It will turn it off automatically which is not what I am looking for. My D750 doesn't change by itself so I'm just wondering if there is any other setting I need to adjust. Thanks in advance.

Yes, this is actually an easy fix. I added the Apply Settings to Live View to my "I" menu. At any time, you can just turn it on/off, even if a flash trigger is connected. When it's in the "I" menu, you have quick access to it this way, and you don't have to hunt through the menus to turn it off. That's what worked for me, and it should solve your issue. Hope this helps. :)

One thing you didn't mention is the 3 user menus you can set up. If you happen to do different types of photography you can set each user menu up for that particular situation. I take a lot of milky way photos. The settings are distant different than for sport/wildlife or portrait photography. You can customize the function buttons and the i menu under each user menu. You can even have your settings for manual mode to start out with saved to each user mode. I use bracketing all the time for landscape but I wouldn't for nightscape so I could have different options in the i menu or function buttons.

Hi Carl, that's a great point and excellent feedback. I use the User Settings for different types of portraits that I often shoot. (U1 for Ringlight headshots with a custom white balance, then U2 for in-studio headshots with a more traditional lighting setup, and so on.) A *really* nice thing about the user settings is that it custom saves *everything* including the custom "I" menus. So if you're shooting one style, you can have a completely different "i" menu pop ups for each User Mode. It's really convenient, and essentially turns the custom "i" menu options from 10 options in the main mode to +30 more options if you toggle the User Mode. Props for highlighting this point, as I forgot to mention this.

@MikeMcGeePhotography
3 жыл бұрын
Hey Ivan, thanks for your comment. There actually are benefits for picture controls, even when shooting raw. Yes, raw is just RAW ultimately. But it does affect the image you see on the back on the camera (and JPEGs), and I think Capture NX-D or NX Studio will even carry over those settings and apply them as an after-adjustment to your RAWs (but don't quote me on that). But for me, even though I don't shoot JPEGs, the picture mode there can alter the image on the back of the camera for "soft proofing" for clients to see the image to give them an idea of posing, image colors, etc. I don't want the "flat" option, so the Standard works nicely. I probably explained this poorly, so I hope this makes sense why I leave it on Standard. For the metering modes, these affect the exposure, so yes, again, with RAW, this can be corrected in post. But in outdoor setting when using Aperture Priority, the metering modes here can affect exposure, which in turn affects the initial image, even in RAW. Again, hope that makes sense, and I likely breezed over this with not enough detail. Thanks for highlighting this info.
@ivansmiljkovic88
3 жыл бұрын
@@MikeMcGeePhotography thats all correct and I agree, but I was making comment with full manual (A, SS, ISO) on my mind. I didnt saw differences changing metering modes in manual raw shooting. I think it will show metering scale according to mode we choose, but wont effect final raw file. Im using central metering on my D750 because that helps me dialing exposure + or - for specifit area (sky, face etc) but with Z series is much easyier because we can see the final outcome 😁. Im mostly shooting HSS, so I firstly ajust settings for sky/background and than add flash.

@MikeMcGeePhotography
3 жыл бұрын
Hey Dan, that's an excellent question. I've never actually held a Z5 in my hands before so I would be reluctant to say definitively, however from the specs side of things, I would say it sure looks like the Z5 would be a perfect option if those features don't matter. (I actually like that the Z5 uses dual SD cards.) Just also keep in mind if you're going with the kit, the Z5 kit lens is a different focal range (24-50mm or 24-200mm) vs the Z6ii kit having the amazing 24-70mm f/4. Again, not saying the kit with the Z5 is subpar by any means, but it's just a noteworthy thing to point out since I love the kit lens of the Z6ii and the 24-70mm focal range is a perfect sweet spot. One last thing would be that the Z5 has a single processor. Again, not a huge issue, however I have a feeling that much like the original Z6 and Z6 (not mark II's) that the single processor units will not get as robust firmware updates in the future to really make autofocusing even better down the road. Still the Z5 sure seems like a solid choice. Hope this info helps in any way.
