I've had my "made in Japan" Z7 since early 2019 and love it. It's just great for my landscape work and I can't see me changing it anytime soon. I also like how Nikon have updated the sofware numerous times swince the launch date.

I shoot stills on a Z7ii. I don’t care about video nor sports/action, thus I’ll stick to my beloved Z7ii for as long as it lives. I moved from a D800 to the Z7ii just for the sake of EVF & IBIS (and smaller size/weight) otherwise I’d have stick to F mount for ages.

I picked up a refurbished Z7 back in 2022, when it was on sale for $1499. It is still perfect for my uses... not a video or sports shooter. Honestly the only thing i would like to have would be backlit buttons. I've slowly been adding Z lenses to my collection (105MC is amazing), but many of my F Mount lenses like the 70-200 f/4 work like a charm.

Interesting timing on this one for me. I owned one of these a few years ago, but upgraded to a Z7ii then a Z8. Just picked up a used Z7 last week with low shutter count for $900 US. These are an absolutely killer deal at the current used prices. Z6s can be had for as little $600, which is also nuts for what you get.

I purchased two Z7s right after their introduction to use on a landscape-shooting trip to Arizona. One carried a 14-24 and the other a 24-70, both AF-S lenses. They were subjected to wet, dusty, and extremely hot conditions and never missed a shot. The image quality was fantastic then, as it is today. I have used both for over five years with no problems. Most of the time these are mounted on a tripod and I usually shoot at around 3-5 fps. For wildlife images, especially birds in flight, I depend on my Z8 and shoot at maximum frame rate. Again with the same image quality as the Z7 thanks to that wonderful sensor.

I actually shoot at 20fps even for street photography as I've found that can often give me better shots, for example, if a car is passing by it can catch a better moment. I don't hold the shutter down for a second so mostly I'm just getting 4-5 frames but it has improved my keeper rate

I was about to get a Z7 as my first full frame camera mostly because of the high MP but then found a Z6II in like new condition. I've been very happy with the Z6II and for travel photography I think it does great. Hi Matt, My old D2X still takes great photographs! It has been sitting on the shelf ever since I bought the Z7 w/ the f 24-70 2.8 lens. Currently, my Z7 is my backup camera or 2nd. on a big shoot since I use the Z9 as my main camera. My Z30 is my walking around / street camera to keep a low profile. I am looking forward to see what Nikon / Red has in store for us in the next Pro "Z" body. 📷📷📷

Z7 Highly recommended and does everything I needed. Purchased 2nd hand at $2300 3 years back. Used it to create a long form documentary for an ultra running documentary (on my channel) with the 24-120 f4. Recorded everything in flat profile and worked a treat with complete confidence. Autofocus was a bit annoying sometimes for video - but absolutely usable. As a "do it all" Nikon, the original Z7 and Z6 would probably meet most needs. BTW - hardly used 10fps as this feature is probably important to less than 2% of most cases for me.

very interesting. I had often thought about it too. I initially bought a Nikon Z6 in 2020. But I quickly realized that I needed the 45 megapixels and switched to the Nikon Z7. I have never regretted that. I never take more than 4-5 frames per second, if at all. What mattered to me was the 45 megapixels and as you rightly said, all other models that are current today are also 45 megapixelsfrom nikon. I love my Nikon Z7 and will keep it. I take a lot of photos with manual lenses like Zeiss. The autofocus is so irrelevant anyway. But in contrast to the Nikon D850, I have the advantage of the focus magnifier.

Hello Matt, I know you are talking about the Z7, Started my mirrorless with Nikon on the Z7II as a replacement for my loved D850 and had the two for a will. I was knot as happy with the D850, mostly with the speed of focus and then the Z9 was about to come out and I said to myself just order it. As there was people waiting months I thought it that time I my lean to love, But no. The Z9 arrived in 3 weeks. Now thats a camera. I have used a number of time at 20fps and one or two times 120fps. The 20fps just take so long going over all the image I now seldom go over 10 fps, But I can if needed. As far as 120fps that is amazing if you have the job for it. Keep well, stay safe and enjoy life. PS You are so right about all the Z glass its just so good it was worth going mirrorless by it self.

Hi Matt. I would consider buying a Z7iii if it came with no blackout, 15fps and 46MP, and hopefully an EVF as good as the Z6ii. I currently own both a Z9 and Z8, which I love, but a Z7iii would be a wonderful landscape, travel and hiking alternative. I sold my Z6ii, Z7ii and my D850 when I bought the Z9 and Z8. I'm a resolution junkie so the Z6iii sounds like a really nice camera, but I want more MP, I was never sold on the Z6ii. By the way, I shoot 15 fps with probably 80% of my images, which have reached 65,000 images in five days when I'm on a big shoot that includes movement. Also, I certainly did love the resolution of both my Z7ii and the D850, but the D850 was just too noisy for my use-case (scared the animals when at full burst, especially when using the Nikon battery grip at 9fps).

It's a fantastic camera for it's age when compared to the newer models, unfortunately in the dark I found the full-frame sensor limiting when doing astrophotography and dark in shadows for landscape shots (even after exposure compensating or stacking) so for that reason i've ventured over on-to the A7iii, but if you can pick up a Z7 during the sales then you'll be more than happy with it.

Absolutely! I still have my Z7ii and looking at the latest from Nikon, there isn't yet a camera that is more suitable to bushwalking landscape work. Apart from wishing I had a multi tilt rear screen there is nothing on the camera that I would change. It still has the best image quality (just) and it is the lightest and smallest high resolution full frame camera that Nikon produces. And of course, the lenses are just sensational on this camera. I suspect I will still be using this camera several years down the track.

I managed to get a used Z7 (kit) within 6 months of the release date, most likely a display model as only 15 shots had been taken. My first real digital camera and my first Nikon. At the time I wasn't taking any sports or fashion shots, so I was really impressed. Purchased the wider f/4 zoom and a 24mm tilt/shift for my travel work. The first runway shot was OK, but found the overall speed of the camera couldn't cope with the fast changing lighting and autofocus at the same time, so purchased a Z9. The Z9 is great, so I now shoot a lot more sports, and have become more reliant on the auto-focus especially using the 50 and 85 mm f/1.2 lenses. Never had a card failure, but then I don't rely on using one card for a whole shoot, this comes from shooting weddings with film. As I like the wide apertures, the only downside is my bag is getting really heavy, and as the Z9 is tall, it's difficult to find a bag which fits the Z9 and is carry-on sized (20cm in my case). I have used other cameras from the people who attend our photo walks, generally I find the ergonomics of the Nikon Z7/9 much better, and the Nikon menus easier to understand even though there are way too many options to choose from. My next purchase, maybe the 400 f/2.8, so totally invested in Nikon kit now, by comparison my very first SLR was a completely mechanical Zenith.

Well I don't use Nikon gear any more Matt. I reckon some of the earlier cameras with better lenses can definitely work well and they are really good value. Now I noticed the Nikon Z and Z72 were very good value. You get 45 megapixels of beef and pretty decent auto focus. I think it's got to the point Matt and I've said this before on several platforms that the auto focus in some of the newer Canon cameras is so good that there is actually virtually no skill level left in the art of photography especially for wildlife photography and I know that sounds like I'm moaning and groaning and being a grumpy old man I'm not that old. I'm 54 but you get where I'm coming from that if there's no challenging Photography then I get disinterested. That's just me now. Some people are all about the shot. They just pack up the gear. They want to head out into the wilderness for the weekend and I get it. They want to nail the shot but I still love some of the challenge that this camera might present. My only concern with this camera is the dynamic range wasn't as good as the D850. This is why it's so good for people getting into Photography now and I teach photography in my local community. It's kind of beginner intermediate level stuff and these are the types of cameras that I tend to promote a fair bit. It's that camera that's maybe four or five years old or longer but still has decent . I'm not a fan of the Z6 cameras at 24 megapixels I've said 24 megapixels is inflexible and you take a huge hit in image quality and I've seen those images out of the Z6 cameras compared to the Z7 and it's talking and cheese and people will bang on about file sizes honestly storage now is so cheap if you are spending $2000 on a camera you can afford two or $300 for two or 5 TB SSD and you're good for ages. The other thing that 45 megapixels gives you is extra cropping think about it. You can crop a photo at 50% and still get a 22 megapixel file. In other words. It means carrying less lenses. You could be carrying a 200 mm lens and you can crop into 400 mm with a 20 megapixel file and that's usually good enough for social media e even printing extra megapixels gives you cropping. I keep telling that to people and people don't get it man oh man.

I bought a z7 back in 2018. It is a fabulous camera with only one gripe: no sensor shield. I had a day out in London and changed lenses (carefully) only 3 times, but ended up with loads of crud on the sensor. Really irritating.

I don’t normally pick nits, but the Z 6 and Z 7 did not make up Nikon’s first foray into mirrorless cameras, just as the R and RP did not represent Canon’s first foray into mirrorless. Nikon introduced its Nikon 1 mirrorless system in 2011, and Canon introduced its M system in 2012. Both of those systems have been discontinued, but they undoubtedly informed the designs of Nikon’s and Canon’s current mirrorless systems.

I can’t wait to see a Z7lll with at least 60mp . Hope soon…!😢

Yeah I wonder what is going on there. I wonder as the 60MP sensor has been out so long now, we might hopefully see something with even more MP. The Fuji APSC 40MP sensor is closer to 100MP in 35mm with that pixel pitch. So who knows what might happen ...

Been using my z7 since 2019. As all the newer models, 7ii 8 & 9 have come along I have looked at what they would add for me and in the end concluded: "nothing that will make any difference to my ability take the photos I take". All the improvement have been about speed (autofocus, bursts etc etc) or video specs and have given me no reason to "upgrade". Side by side the same photo taken on the later models will not have better image quality and the benefits the new models bring are irrelevant for me. It seems to me that pure image quality has not improved in digital cameras for quite some time and so unless you genuinely require faster or higher video specs an oldish camera like the z7 will do the job just as well as the latest and at a lot less cost.

I bought my used z7ii for $1900 from a professional. The running price for used z7ii at that point of time was around $2900 - $3200. I use my camera mainly for bird photography and travel. And let me tell you if your bird photography consist of birds perching on trees or slow moving birds in flight, this nikon z7ii is enough.

I shoot only stills, and mostly nighttime. I occasionally will attempt bird photography, but I don't have really fast focusing lenses. My longer range telephoto lenses are AF in camera, so AF doesn't work on my Z6. I've never tried more than even 5fps. I just recently upgraded to mirrorless a few months ago, when I bought my Z6. What astonishes me with the AF on my F-mount lenses that are fully functional on Z-mount, is that it grabs focus faster, with an FTZ adapter, than my D600 ever did. I only have one Z-mount lens, but it's a third party, so I'm looking forward to those F1.4 lenses dropping in price. I'm getting good deals on used Nikkor F-mount glass, which is definitely an upgrade from some of the third party F-mount lenses I've had. I just got a 24mm F1.8G. I'm content to use the Nikkor AF-S lenses on my Z6 for now, since they are fully functional with the adapter. I also still have a modified D5300, so I want to have some F-mount for that.

I picked up a Z7 used in Korea two years ago for about US$1300 after I had left my Zfc (but not my lenses) at home in Texas. For stills, it's really hard to see any reason to upgrade. I'm not pushing the extremes of performance and I've got a box of manual focus F mount lenses, so there isn't really anything any manufacturer can offer that improves my workflow.

No, I think its not a good idea to but a Z7. It has banding issues, the focus is laggy and it tends to jump to the brightest part of the screen. The 1 card slot is just no. The mark 2? Maybe as a back up to the back up or as a lanscape camera only.

The dynamic range of the Z7 sensor is slightly greater than even the electronically faster sensors Z8 and Z9. I love mine and the colours are superb. I don’t shoot video. I love manual focus lenses too. Not interested in faster autofocus. I shoot well below 8 frames per sec.

Funny, I just purchased another Z7 Gen 1 so I can carry two of them and don’t have to swap lenses during my shoots. The sensor and files are so good for low light photography that I would consider the stacked sensors of the Z8 and Z9 a downgrade.

I shoot below 10. I own a z6 and have been very happy with it. It would be nice to have the 45mp sensor but I also love night photography and it’s my understanding that the lower 24 in my z6 is better in low light. I would like to know if the z7 is just as good in low light? Thanks
