I use my Voigtlander 40mm f2 and 58mm f1.4 on the Z8 and love how they perform and look on the camera. Would be nice to get a Z mount version but they don’t have them at the photo shop I go to. Need to check out some other places.

I have the Zf and the Voightlander 40mm f1.2 and 75mm f1.5 for Z mount. These lenses have clickable aperture rings and utilise the Zf white/green eye recognition box system for manual focusing. They are both a magical combination with the Zf.

My first Nikon was an FM2. Followed by a couple of F2 bodies. The F2 with an eye level finder is the classic look for a camera. I went with the D8xx series and even bought a Df, which I sold later when I bought a Z7. But I've got the Zf on order. Zf is F2 spelled backwards, sort of, so I'm looking forward to it.

Oh wow I didn't notice that, thanks for point out Zf is kinda like backward F2, Zf is about the nostalgia design which connect well to the backward name you discovered too, it's amazing you found it, how you do that?! I love backward perspective and multi-perspective and multidimensional too, that's why I love the movie Tenet, I planned to get A7RV for the 4 ways screen but I love yellow color and want to experience the tactile experience, I'm shifting toward the ZF now, just hope they will release a Yellow leather version since Nikon is Yellow themed as well hence they should do it, also hope there will be a true rangefinder with switchable EVF modern contemporary futuristic hybrid camera!

Two advantages of the Zf over the Z6II is that the Zf has high efficiency z RAW files and the XSPEED 7 processor.

It’s interesting to hear what older photographers think about the Zf, such as what it lacks as a retro camera. Let’s remember that this is a fusion camera, combining old and new to appeal to the current batch of photographers and content creators. In addition to the PSAM settings, there is also an Auto setting, like the Zfc, which the Df didn’t have. Young folks are loving this design and the Zfc is selling much better than we would have thought. Nikon is capitalizing on this fact, by making a full frame version for those that want a bigger version and a full frame sensor. If Nikon were to make a higher end version, let’s call it a ZfX, built around the 45MP sensor from the Z7II, using all the tech from the Zf while extracting every ounce of performance you could squeeze from that sensor, or drop in a new 16 bit sensor (maybe around 45-50MP) for superb image quality, pair it with a retro styled lens (20-65 f2) with an old style aperture ring and sell the pair for $5000 USD, how many would be interested in one? Let’s say it was based off the FM3 but had a grip of a more modern design, to fit the EN-EL15 battery and dual card slots, CF Express and SD and also do up to 8K30 video (because video is always going to be there today), would that make it more enticing for older shooters or would that pull in younger hipsters? I think that would pull some people that have lusted for a Leica but can’t afford to get into that system. They would buy this camera and special lens but, also have access to Nikon’s current and future lineup of Z lens. I think that could be another path for Nikon to grow their Z fusion lineup.

Interesting idea @waynerm002. A higher resolution 'ZfX' would indeed be a very tempting proposition, and we agree that Nikon does need to offer a bit more choice on the retro lens front.

Nikon should release a retro APS-C fixed-lens rangefinder-style camera with some of these features to compete with the perpetually sold out Fuji X100V.

I feel you underestimate the Df. I have it and it produces excellent results. And it can use about 98% of Nikon's F mount lenses. And a bonus for me is there is no video. The market is awash with cameras with video which is fine, but for us photo only folks who yearn for a photo only camera the Df was a God send. Will some camera maker please make a photo only camera, PLEASE!!!!

Those days are gone, Nikon is in the business of selling cameras and they have to market to the young generation to keep their sale up. This Zf has a textured back on the screen, so you can turn that in and it will look like an old film camera. In this way, you could shoot as much as you want and not see the photos until you “develop” (offload to computer) them. Brings back that old film way of doing things. 😉👍🏼

@waynerm002 is right. Although we know a few togs who would happily pay extra to NOT have video (and some bought the Df for that reason) the lack of video is one of the main reasons the Df didn't sell as well as hoped and we very much doubt that Nikon (or any other mainstream brand) else would make that mistake again. Its easy enough to just not use the video button and on most cameras you can customise it to do something else.

As someone that always liked the mechanical composing flow of a SLR, my favourite remains the Nikon FM. Comparing the body with the Olympus OM1, the OM1 is a beauty, one to have an affair with, the Nikon FM was the one to marry. When the Df came along, I always felt it was overpriced for what it was in the 2013. I waited to get a nice used copy before buying. It’s ace was the D4 processor which gave superb images. The down side, compered with conventional DSLR bodies was the slower control process and a weedy grip. The Zfc came along, clearly more accomplished (in my view) than the Z50, and with an attached grip, better in the hand. It’s now my main every day and travel camera, but feel short changed as I often use the small FX primes. I will wait for a serious review of a production version before I consider buying a copy.

I like the look of the ZF (it is a very classic-looking body!) but I would have liked to have seen an AF joystick on the rear of the camera. With that said, it's not a deal-breaker, and I think the ZF will sell really well. It might appeal to those who like the look of Fujifilm X cameras but want a full-frame sensor (or not?)

In all that talk about Nikon's "iconic cameras" from the 70s and the 80s, how come nobody ever mentions the F2? That camera was not just a classic, it was a legend. I had the pleasure of owning a F2AS, and I can tell you that was photography bliss. It was THE pro camera to own. How come Nikon doesn't come up with a digital honor to the F2?
@AmateurPhotographerTV
11 ай бұрын
The F2 was also a classic, I guess its a volume thing. A lot more people will have owned the more affordable FM and FE series models. The F2 is also quite a big bigger - perhaps they could give the Zf an F2-styled sibling based on the Z7 II's higher resolution 45MP sensor. Wouldn't that be nice? But lets see some more small retro-style primes first!

I think Fuji has a major problem on their hands now that the ZF has been announced. I've rented a few newer Fuji's and wasn't impressed with their autofocus/tracking features for sports and everyday life (with kids). Fuji did have a spot in the niche market they created however, how will they hold up if Canon and Sony also release quality retro style cameras?
@AmateurPhotographerTV
Жыл бұрын
I don't think Sony will release a retro style camera - they were never in the film SLR market to begin with so it wouldn't feel authentic. They will stick to looking forwards for inspiration rather than backwards. Canon's 35mm cameras never had the design icon status that Nikon's did, apart from perhaps the F1. The T90 inspired the EOS range anyway, so that leaves the A1/A-E1 for Canon to base a retro model on, and I'm not sure there's enough lingering affection for those. Fujifilm will always have an ace up its sleeve compared to Nikon's Zf - the X lens range. I don't think they will be losing any sleep just yet. (Nigel Atherton, Editor)

it feels to me like all the reviewers are trying to sell this camera. As a former owner of the Df, and now a Sony user, I just can't get excited about what Nikon is doing. You said third time is a charm. I'm a bit concerned about a company that would take three swings at the same concept.

The Df was ten years ago. The technology wasn't there to make a Zf size/spec camera back then, now it is. The Zfc could arguably have been a bit more 'pro' spec, but the lack of APS-C lenses for Z mount would still be an issue.
