The weather and my schedule finally cooperated so that I could venture the 20+ miles from home to the Niles Canyon Railway in Niles, CA. From April through August, the railroad runs excursion trains between Niles and Sunol every Sunday. On the second and fourth Sunday each month, they pull their excursions with one of their many steam locomotives.
On this weekend they were using the Clover Valley Lumber Company No. 4, a 2-6-6-2T steamer built in 1924 by the Baldwin Locomotive Works. Operations call for the steamer to pull the train upgrade from Niles to Sunol while the return trips are handled by a diesel locomotive. On this day, the diesel was an EMD GP 9 built for Southern Pacific in 1955. Since the line follows an old SP route, it’s possible that the diesel ran on this line during its heyday.
Filming locations start at Sunol and include shots at Brightside Yard, Vallejo Mills, Niles Station and finally pulling upgrade at the Farwell Bridge.
